I like the Arena for Blizzard's approach to the free to play aspect of the game as well as a good source of practice through improvised play in endless permutations of situations but I would still do Standard mode because that's where deck constructing and ranked play comes in. That's where you test your skill with a certain class specific deck and use the cards you chose for strategy and synergy. I'm looking forward to both really.
Someone confirm this please but I do believe that the dailies are rewards of 40 gold each -150 needed to play arena- and you use constructed decks for the dailies- now you can easily play unranked and get your two wins or whatever the daily is. So unless you are playing arena with real dollars you are going to need to do some constructed. As to buying cards you only really need to do that if you are in a hurry to fulfill your decklist, otherwise crafting should take care of business just fine.

Actually there are some dailies that can reward 60 gold, which are normally win "5" games with a class. Generally If you do good in Arena, say 5+ wins, the gold from that and at least 2 dailies should get you back into the arena. Though Arena rewards are way to random still to always be the case(I got 5 gold for 6 wins before).
As others above had said, Arena is great with dailies - as long as you win 4-5 games and do a daily, you can draft a game day for free.
Why play constructed? Because its a different game to Arena. Arena it is preferable for you to have cards that work well together or with your Hero Power, in Constructed you and everyone else have cards that go well together. Its a different game and a different mindset. Also you cant throw a pile of legends in a deck in Arena unless you are really really lucky :)

Nozdormu wins you every game where you opponent has to go to the bathroom on turn 9.

I've also gotten a daily to win 7 games (any class) for 100g.
Blizz stated yesterday (today? The time difference US-EU get's me messed up) that they are not done with the ranking system for release yet, so probably the "weekly rank" or the fact that you can't be demoted will change to further nurture competitive play. If that is the case, your 9 victories in arena and then it's gone will be bragging rights. Staying at 3-star master how ever will be where the real actions at, just like Grand Master in SC2, or Challenger in LoL.
This is just speculation however, I might be completely wrong and for all I know there might be a ranking system implemented for Arena too!
I think arena is vastly superior to constructed when it comes to streaming. You can engage your viewers by polling which hero to choose; your viewers see every card you put into the deck and you don't need a ton of explanation for each card (it was better than the other 2!); and you have a clear goal: Get as many wins as possible before 3 losses.
I do not think the average player will live in the arena when the game launches though I am sure it will be very popular.

Well, HS has a pretty bad ranking system, where you can only go up, but never down.
Like when helped people get to Masters in SC2, they couldn't really play without risk of losing their rank. In HearthStone, they can lose 50 games in a row and still be in 3Star Master. Not to mention 3Star Master, at least in the beta is far too easy. Only took like 50 wins total with a deck that has 4 rares and the rest basic/commons. If I were to guess, Masters in HS is probably like 10%+, compared to the 2% of Masters in StarCraft.
balancing for ranked mode is broken right now. on top of the general tweaks that need to be done there is also:
- the player base is just terribly small. watch a stream with someone doing constructed at 2am for at least 30 mins and you will probably see at least one repeat opponent.
- one part of the game that has not been implemented yet are the weekly rewards based on rank. blizzard has said that this is coming. this will balance the rewards in the arena vs. constructed debate.
If I were to guess, Masters in HS is probably like 10%+, compared to the 2% of Masters in StarCraft.
i blame some of this on the nature of beta. who knows how many people have activated beta keys on their account and played for 30 minutes and then never pick it up again. I agree that the % of masters ranked players seems very high right now but we are looking at streamers who are generally a) playing a lot, and b) playing in the first place.
I feel like I'll like deck-building and gathering cards more than the arena, because it allows me to build my own strategies and combos, and that's what's attracting me in the game. Arena is too random for me. Although I don't know if I'll still be feeling this way once I get to actually play the damn game.

Exactly what the title says. What's the point in buying cards if the main place to be in Hearthstone is the arena.
I must be missing something but I'm not sure what exactly.
It's only the main place if you want it to be, it's not meant to be "the ultimate end game goal" to be good at arena.
You can do arena, or you can do constructed, or you can do both. It's up to you.
If you are only planning to do arena you probably shouldn't buy cards.

I hate drafting decks, so I'll never really use Arena that much...

Constructed is hella fun, don't get me wrong I love arena but I also like ranked play.
Arena is the place to be for now because the play mode rewards system is not yet implemented.
Arena can appear to be the "place to be" because most or all of the streamers are playing arena. This might be because:
-good players can accumulate gold more quickly in arena
-the arena format is more entertaining for viewers, provides more drama
-their personal preference
-you don't need to worry about having suboptimal decks from lack of cards, you can win now on a level field and get viewers
I don't think it has anything to do with constructed inherently being a less prestigious play mode.
I didn't know the play mode is going to have a rewards system. Do we have any idea what it's going to be? Have they mentioned anything about it?
They have only said they are looking at the ranked system's rewards, if any.
If you see a bad post on the forum use the report function under it, so I or someone else of the moderation team can take care of it!
