Hi, Im planning on using $50 AU to purchase around 30 HS packs. I was wondering if I should buy TGT of classic packs. I'm missing quite a lot of classic legendaries (Ysera, Alex, Jaraxxus etc). However, I have a very small amount of TGT cards. I could also buy 15 of each.
Personally, I would buy TGT as you get classic packs for Tavern Brawl, Quests ("watch a friend play via spectate"), and optionally via gold (again, earned via quests).
In this way, you'll be able to play some of the newer cards that mix well with the BASIC class cards (earned just by leveling your character). If you win 100 games (any mode), you get 300 gold (which translates to another 3 packs - classic ones if you choose).
If it were me spending that money, I would go with TGT all day.
And, as a bit of an aside: you can dust several of the TGT legendaries (like Ramshield) without much worry. This would translate into crafting capability - again something you could focus on Classic cards. At this point, there are many TGT cards that are worthwhile, and Classic has a ton of playability - but you'll likely only end up using a select amount of TGT cards, thus leaving you free to dust the remainder (especially rare/legendary) to craft your specific Classic cards you may be missing.
General rule is to Booster commons and rares, but craft legendaries and epics if what you are concerned about is your collection.
Thus I'd say buy TGT packs. It takes about 20 packs, on average, to get one legendary, and thus the chance of getting the legendary you want is less than a .1% chance: you can go 1000 packs without getting the exact legendary you want. Chances are, you're going to craft those legendaries with dust, which means arena would be the best place if you can at least get 3 wins on average.
Commons and rares are best gotten via packs since you'll get them far more often.
So if you want purchase packs, buy TGT cards and use the spare dust to craft whatever classic legendary you want . Once you have most of the rares/commons of TGT you want, focus on arena for the rest.
If you have most of the Classic commons and rares and an okayish amount of epics, go with TGT. Otherwise go with Classic.
And while it is true you'll probably craft most Legendaries, you do want to try and pull them (and if you don't own many of them you have a higher chance of pulling one you need) since it means the dust can be spent elsewhere. But it is true given rarity, it's better to try and get commons and rares you need than shoot for the off chance of getting a Legendary you need.
I had a small collection and I just opened 50 TGT packs. I have a lot of the commons and many duplicates of each. A random assortment of the rares and epics and you should not expect any particular legendary.
Contrary to what everyone else is advising you, I'd go with the Classic packs. You are not losing much not having TGT cards. There are perhaps two dozen cards from the whole expansion seeing play and while that may change, it still wouldn't change my opinion on the matter. A chance at classic Legendaries I feel are a lot more important. But then again, it also depends on what kind of deck you are looking to craft and play, what your play style is and so forth. Regardless of which, good luck with your packs!

TGT is not going to help make you competitive if you do not own a good load of versatile cards from other sets.
I would buy Classic if a) You value winning higher than having a few fun games. b) You do not buy/grind many packs
He already has most of Classic though. he also has Naxx/BRM. As such he already has the high tier decks at hand. As such, there's no point buying classic boosters in the hope of getting legendaries.
Oh. He did not say whether there was any cards from TGT he wanted. If he is just opening for 1 or 2 possible TGT legs, then its still probably better opening classic.
I'd Personally open TGT for the commons just in case you require them later, seeing as he is not a new player.

unless they want to be the best they can be.

You are guaranteed to get a classic pack each week from Tavern brawl so I would get TGT. What kind of deck is fun for you? What do you want to build?
