No, I doubt it will be the same as rank. Tournaments are a set # of players (not whomever is on in your range), are live (im guessing) presumably having some sort of win/advance or lose/out mechanism. Presumably prizes would scale more you advance, and it would last a given # of games/rounds.
I think it makes sense for Blizzard to work towards this since the desire is there- look at all of the tournaments being run despite the shenanigans of making friends and playing each round. If they were able to build a framework for those to be run, and they could handle the entry fee/payouts (in gold ofcourse) its another money making avenue for them.

I meant the games you play will be exactly the same. As in, you could play exactly the same match/deck in rank. The only thing that has chnaged is the format.

People are already tired of complaining about brawl mode and want a new mode to whine and complain about.
LoL that's funny. But true, sadly.
However, I believe there is more to that. A lot of Hearthstone players have had experience with other card games (I don't wanna just say TCG because that's not really the only one). Some of them might even have participated in tournaments. When they are asking for a "Tournament Mode", they are reminiscing on the past and is trying to bring back (or trying to experience for the first time) the experience of a tournament.
The mere mention of the word "Tournament" also brings the feeling of authority, of seriousness. It's like they are no longer playing "just a game", but is engaged in serious competition, with other competitors to fight for glory and fame, to prove that they are the champion(s) of this competition. Which is fine, whatever. Know that Hearthstone will never be like this.
Hearthstone is a casual game BY DESIGN. The developers said that. The developers do exactly that. Randomness breeds fun and laughter. Randomness ruins competition. The developers want the game for players so that the players can pick it up, play a few games, get some good laughter, and move on with their daily lives. I guess that vision doesn't really align with some of the vocal minorities. But that's fine. Everyone has a say, right?
If they want competition, want tournament mode, go play M:tG. If I don't have a fiancee, and have a buttload of cash from my father, sure I would play M:tG all day and engage in tournaments. Afterall a little bit of my heart still want to excel at playing card games, specifically M:tG. But alas, I can't. So I am content with Hearthstone, giving me some card games to play and think about, but is casual enough I can set it down and go on with my daily lives.
Someone had responded to my other posts, saying something like "you are like someone saying you don't need to get high on drugs because you can get high on lives". I mean, well yeah. I don't know if I get high on lives, but I certainly don't need to get high on drugs, or Hearthstone, or M:tG, for that matter. I am not saying anything, I am just pointing it out.

It's literally the same thing as rank. I reckon if we got it, people would be complaining nothing has changed.
Not true. Tournament matches slightly differ. People research what's popular, what's strong, and try to counter that. This is when tech cards become EXTREMELY crucial. An extra Ironbeak Owl may win a game, or taking out a Loatheb and putting in a Hellfire could steal a win.
Also, you forget that we normal players don't get to enjoy tournament style matches, where there's one clear winner after say 8 battles, and ultimately receiving better rewards. Like, enter for 100 gold, walk out with 50% of the pot with a pack/golden card.
Mini tournaments in poker clients are fun and cheap to enter with good rewards; the concept is the same for mini Hearthstone tournaments.

If you're happy and you know it... well that's good :)
- 3rd party tournaments - league with huge prizes announced couple of days ago - official tournaments
All announced and streamed on site, where comment above was posted.
ppl might want: rewards for their struggle, to feel competent and enjoy rivalry AND having this things availbe with ease, by ingame option, not by 3rd party sites
Yes, people can have their own tournament, can give prize to attract participants, but my point still stands. The people at Blizzard do not necessarily want to turn their Hearthstone into ESports. The equation is simple:
"If people who want tournament > people who pay to play casual games, go tournament."
"If people who pay to play casual games > people who want tournament, the game stays casual."
I have nothing against people who want tournament, I am simply pointing out that the game is not heading that direction because of the game producer's decision, because it is a business decision (a.k.a. what they should do to make the most money out of the game).
You may think that Blizzard needs to do justice and give players tournament mode, but no. It is just about money. Haven't you heard of Bobby Kotick?

Well more ways to play = more happy players = more money.
Just beacuse they create a tournament mode doesnt mean they have to remove the option to play casual.
The problem is going tournament mode or going casual pushes the game in different design direction.
As I have stated...
Hearthstone is a casual game BY DESIGN. The developers said that. The developers do exactly that. Randomness breeds fun and laughter. Randomness ruins competition.
If they want to create a tournament mode, it is not just a decision to put a button there and let people play. It affects card design, it affects game design.

Because people want to feel they compete for rewards with constructed deck
because every card game got tournament mode
If today people say "playing only casual, ranked, adventures, arena and brawls is boring", then after the tournament release they will say "playing only casual, ranked, adventures, arena and brawls and tournament is boring, give us 2vs2". And then 2vs2 is boring. We need 4vsBoss mode. And more and more.
u are in wrong... brawl suck and a 2vs2 mode is fun .... ask urself why they until relase we don't know nothing of brawl and how it work? because if we knew it we ask for other and refuse it......
So you are saying you would happily crap on something before you've even tried it. Okay, I guess?

If you don't care, then you just don't play it, simple! are you just rooting for something to moan about?

What I am trying to point out is that Blizzard deliberately makes Hearthstone a casual game. And from what I am seeing right now, the course is still the same. And there is a reason behind this. Market research. And I am not talking about doing research on a forum or making a poll. I am talking about Blizzard paying 10k to companies to do this kind of research. When market research tells them "hey make it casual", they make it casual and make the quick bucks. When market research tells them "hey go ESports", they make it ESports.
Maybe Blizzard not doing what you want makes you mad, I don't know. I am saying they do this for a reason. They are a company. They create this company to make money. If a differing opinion is too hard to swallow, feel free to ignore me. But look at the fact. Don't just crap on what others have to say when they don't agree.

Well when I think tournament mode, I'm thinking something like, entry fee: 300 gold, 32 players, prizes for 1st, 2nd and winner of 3rd place play off maybe. A bo3, knockout format. And when you win one out, you get some kind of medal/crest ... this to me sounds fun. BUT it's not something I see Blizz implementing. I'm not saying it should be instead of anything else, but along with.
See, you are talking about the M:tG model. But the problem is, M:tG is designed to have competition. You don't hear M:tG players moan in horror with "RNGESUS RUIN MY DAY" because the game is not designed that way. (When mana-screw and mana-flood is real, but whatever, people don't care about it, for some reason)
If they implement tournament mode, the way you describe it, problems will arise. When people are betting currencies on it, they tend to care way more about the outcome. Look at how many whining threads are generated every day when what is at stake is just ranks. If they intend to go tournament, they need to change the game design and the game's vision. They will need to cut those RNG cards, they will need to implement sideboards to balance out every decks, they will need to do card balances every single week. They don't have that kind of resources. They are on like, what, 5 games? World of warcraft, Starcraft 2, Hearthstone, DiabloIII, Heroes of the Storm. They simply cannot devote enough developers and designers to get the job done right. So they go casual. Because that way the game is way more forgiving on design flaws.

Nothing to do with any other game anyway ... they can hold tournaments for HS as is, just not within the game itself. Of course bad losers will moan. People moan about arena, about constructed, about casual even, and now Brawl ... why should anything be dismissed because people might moan?
The tournament mode will be possible only as a "constructed arena" format. You pay 150 gold and play with your constructed deck until 12 wins or 3 losses. And you get prizes accordingly. Blizzard will never implement a mode where you pay for entrance and get 0 for losing all the games. It will be very frustrating for the majority of playerbase. And even 8 players knockout is hardly possible, because 3 rounds of Bo3 requires 6-9 games 10-15 minutes each, played straight without pauses by all 8 players. How do you imagine it especially after Hearthstone's focus on mobile platforms?
They could have varying formats. One being for mobile, 8 entrants, 100 gold, winner takes all, just one KO game.
You obviously take the risk, like any other competition in any game. Why should losers get anything? I know I don't play to break even in any kind of tournament, it's all or nothing for me.
It'll never happen anyway, just saying what 'I' would like to see in the game.
