I honestly don't think it was a massive amount outside of press/contests, probably under 10,000 honestly. Though I expect them to ramp it up over the next few week to the road towards open beta.
I also can't imagine the beta being long. If open beta is more than a month away I would be surprised. Release by mid to late October is my expectation if not by the end of September.
I think there is not more then a 1000 players on HS right now, being press and fansites members plus some give away. The waves will probably starts this coming week. I bet they opened the beta to a low populace during the weekend to test out servers stability.
yea i would have to agree that it isnt much more than 1000. last night someone was playing ladder mode and in maybe 8 matches he played the same guy 6 times.
Disclaimer: I'll relate it purely because I heard it, though no quote was provided and I read it on the forums, so be warned!
It was mentioned by a blue in response to someone asking about the EU wave that keys would be going out in days rather than weeks. General idea seems to be that it'll be at the end of the week, after Gamescon. If you ask me, this makes sense.

That is a relief in that case. I am warned but it sounds ideal to me so I will accept it as a slight fact!
Then I suggest spending Friday night away from sharp objects, high places and preferably surrounded by bubble wrap. Just in case.
such a shame for me, I basically move to newzealand and wont have internet for ages in a week and a bit! Wish the eu beta or my old nz account would get the beta key Q_Q
There must be a problem with Europeans wich is still unfixable. It's really unfair we dont get a chance at least to try the game and give some feedback (i am in a pissed off mode got gp'ed in wow and the raid is ooing bad).
Either you allow everyone to test the game and have it ready as soon as possible or you dont release a half working Beta.
Gennerally Europe was never favorited by Blizzard. 1 World Wide Invitational, the price rates euros/dollars etc etc..
Sorry for the small rant mode but as a President of the Beta Club and European i feel mad!

Man you do realise that Blizzard HQ is in the USA? Ofc. they start their small beta there, it's better for them in every aspect. I don't think the world will crumble if us, europeans have to wait a few weeks. They'll let everyone in, but setting up a stable server infrastructure is no small feat, and if the servers crash all the time then the negative feedback can hurt the company, so they play it safe (as they should be). And betas are betas, because they are not the final product. It still needs some work, but finished enough to let people test core elements.
Makes sense to test servers with smaller numbers from more local locations. If it holds up, invite more from the region. If it still looks good and everythings going well, open it up to other regions bit at a time. It would be crazy to expect it all in one go.
Also don't forget that just because you're in EU, doesn't mean you can't create a US account, sign up for opt in with it and try to win keys to put on the account. You won't get a golden Gelbin for your main account, but you'll still get to play early.

Anyone know if waves will be daily or weekly or anything like that? it seems there's a such a small amount of players right now
I believe that's not general knowledge, just as and when Blizzard decide to send them. If things go well, there's a good chance it'll be daily (for the US) with EU predicted (not confirmed) for arriving Friday.

As bad as I feel for the EU players, there are still a ridiculous amount of NA players that haven't gotten in yet. So not to be Debbie Downer here (even though I am), but once the EU beta is released, it's not guaranteed you'll get in. But I hope everyone does!
It's simply a matter of time! I don't want to know how many hours I've spent on HS-streams the past days... If we (read: I ) don't get a beta-invite when it's released in Europe, atleast we'll have the open beta after the wipe! :)
edit: clarification... A matter of time til everyone gets beta through open. Or did I interpret the beta-post wrong? :(
Does anyone know how many waves of invites have been sent out? Also when the next beta invite wave should be sent out?

Got no beta, holding my breath.

Latest wave has gone out about 30 mins ago from what the official forums are saying - I'd go check them!
