Why do people emote this after one-sidedly trouncing someone? Do they not realize how much of an asshole they're coming across as, or is that the intent?
If you say itafter every game you just kind of forget what you are doing and it becomes second nature. I know that I only emote With hello at the beginning and well played at the end without any sort of intentions behind either.
You mentioned 30-0. I usually play control decks (usually Priest or Warrior), so there is a big difference if someone 30-0 me on turn 4 versus they manage to find just enough damage to finish me before I gain complete control (even though at this moment it might be 30-8 or something).
Do they not realize how much of an asshole they're coming across as, or is that the intent?
No, they do not. Most kids think that saying "well played" first when you win a game is polite. It is not.
How come you get to decide what is polite and what isn't?
Some people would say conceding as soon as you see that you've lost is polite, others that it's polite not to concede and let the opponent have their triumph. You'll always offend someone no matter what you do.
I think getting offended by an emote is pretty pointless. Unless you can find that player get their phone number and ask them what they ment by it when they said it then I would just assume it was intended as a compliment.
Furthermore on that subject losing from a certain health perspective does not mean it was not a good game. In a game where you can win with 2 turns of board control losing without having hit the opponent does not even necessarily mean you did bad as much as you never got the board control you needed. Ive often lost without hitting my opponent where I felt I contested the board fairly well but just never got the cards I needed to switch to offense (this usually happens in control versus aggro matches where by the time you take board control to start turning the tide they either set up a combo or have face dmg in hand to finish you.)
I think using "Well Played" when someone makes a mistake or saying "Thanks" when you win or someone misplays could be seen as being a jerk. But like the one guy said above, common courtesy in LoL or Starcraft is to say gg or glhf and stuff like that. There's nothing wrong with using "Well Played" at the end of a match that was one-sided. I use it quite often after really crazy plays or wins that I thought were well fought for but sometimes I'll just say it at the end of a game out of habit.
GG and WP r said in a lot of games these days and yes, the intent should be to "thank" for a good game/match that u enjoyed, but lets be honest, 90% is rly just to rub it in your opponents face, when u roflstomped him and now u just want to smack him one more time. This is more of a case in moba games, a bit harder to "prove" this in HS, but i do believe it to be the case in most situations as well.
proper etiquette is to emote well played after the player is dead. not on the turn of. usually even if its 30-0 win and you say it after the death its considered gm. if the guy says well played then plays his card and wins its annoying and bm
If you say it once it's one thing. Spamming it when you think you have won and feel like I should concede that is a whole different thing. It does make beating them that much better though. Those that emote spam in a sarcastic manner are assholes. It is fun however to start spamming them back when you have the upper hand. And then watch as the innkeeper tells you "your opponent has left". Love that.
I do think it is poor manners to not concede when you are beat. But I would never berate someone with emotes if they didn't do it however. This seems to happen most often when I'm playing control warrior. IDK what it is about that deck but everyone thinks they have a chance to win right up till you deal lethal Perhaps we need a five star system for ranking other players after a match. It wouldn't really have any in game ramifications, but it would let you know who to squelch before the match starts.
If you think that 30-0 loss is always an unsporting game, as a rule, then just play Arcane Missiles, mulligan to it, and Dennis the opponent's face Turn 1 as much as you can. At least then, you won't ever suffer the indignity of being in a game that wasn't "well played". Kappa
I usually say well play when someone RnG's a win, has exactly the right card with like 2 or 3 in their hand or top decks the right one. It usually expresses my exasperation. Usually people say it as they are about to go for lethal or think they've won, I don't mind that. Face hunters emoting sorry twenty times because you got a bad hand they silenced the only taunt you drew, that's annoying.

It doesn't matter if you win or not. By saying "well played" or "gg", you are simply saying "thank you for the fun match"

IDK, i just emote>threat all game.

well played=gg I don't see anything wrong with it I also say gg in all chat in league every game at the end I think it's ok to do so..
there is a diffeence between well played at the end of the game than "I am sorry"

I emote nothing aside from an apology if I lag or something.
I do this because I fear one day a fan will snap and stalk down all the people spamming "Well Played."

Sometimes i fake people out by saying well played when they have low health and i have nothing in my hand, it works occasionally.

i use it as a gg, like most people do in all games
