So you want to improve your card collection, or show off your skills in the arena, but you don't want to spend real money? You're going to need gold, and a lot of it. In this guide, we'll go through the various methods that you can earn this shiny currency to keep your Hearthstone addiction going.
Winning Games
You mean I can get gold by winning games? You bet! For every three games that you win in Play Mode, you will earn 10 gold to put into your stash. The only downside to earning gold in this way is that your earnings from winning games are capped at 100 gold per day. This gold cap is only for winning games - dailies and the arena do not count towards it. Sorry, but you can't just farm the ladder n00bs to get rich*.
* No disrespect intended. I like my shins tyvm.
Completing Quests
There are many quests in Hearthstone which will grant you mountains of gold pieces for completing them. These quests can only be completed once though, so take care spending your gold!
We have also included quests in this table which reward other commodities such as Arcane Dust and Card Packs.
Each day, you will be given a single daily quest after you have completed the tutorial and a couple of games. Dailies are listed at the bottom of your quest log, and you may store a maximum of three of them.
If you're looking to put the least amount of time into completing dailies, or you don't have much time to play everyday, it is best to wait until you have 3 daily quests which can be completed together before you start grinding games, to maximize your gold earned per game.
Daily quests may be cancelled, up to a maximum of one per day, and when you cancel the daily quest you will be given a replacement. You can use this to your advantage to possibly get a daily that is quicker to complete, gives you more gold (a 60 gold daily would be nicer than a 40 gold one!), or just lets you get it out of the way at the same time as your other dailies.

Slaying Opponents in the Arena
Warning! Not for the newbies!
Last, but certainly not least, we've got the Arena. Unfortunately though, in order to make use of this gold printer, it is going to require luck, skill, and a 150 gold entry fee.
The Arena is Hearthstone draft mode. Briefly, you will choose 30 cards at random from the full pool of cards in the game, and then queue up to crush your opponents with your deck. Based on your victories, you will be given gold, arcane dust, and maybe some (golden) cards.
If you can become a master of the arena, you can earn hundreds of gold in profit per run! However, if you aren't the best at the arena, your time is better spent building up your skillset in constructed so that you don't end up wasting your precious gold on arena runs. You will always receive at least one pack of cards for your efforts in the arena, which costs 100 gold, so the entry fee for the arena can be viewed as 50 gold + buying a pack. In order to profit in your run you're going to require at least a few wins.
The following table is a community-sourced effort from the Hearthstone Wikiwhich contains the reward data for arena runs based on the number of wins.
The No. column indicates the number of rewards you get to open.

Hopefully you have learned how to make the best out of your time in Hearthstone if you plan to shoot for the moon. Suggestions and comments are always welcomed!
Just a side note: for the 2 quests below, wins from duel also counts towards them, I just hit 1000 wins and received 300g but checked in quests that my total Play Mode and Arena Mode counts doesn't sum up to 1000 wins.

Short Question to the 100 gold cap/day. is it limited to the 10g/3 wins or is it combined with gold you earn through quests and/or arena?
it is limited to the 10g/3wins, arena and quests does not go towards this cap.
As Ninjapig said, the 100 gold cap is just for the 10g/3 wins. I will make a correction so it's more clear.
Just a side note: for the 2 quests below, wins from duel also counts towards them, I just hit 1000 wins and received 300g but checked in quests that my total Play Mode and Arena Mode counts doesn't sum up to 1000 wins.

Practice Mode wins also count towards Chicken Dinner, Big Winner and Total Dominance.
Quests can once again be dropped, once per day. (Source)
Missing The Duelist, win 3 in Play mode (counts arena), rewards 100g.
Can you win these more than once? or is it one time deal? So not every 100 winds is 300g? nor every 1000 wins?
EDIT*** NM its once per account.
