So i got bored during one of my games and started to look up some of the lore behind some of the characters/cards i was using. I am brand new to the Blizzard/WoW universe, so reading through some of the things that have happened was really really interesting. I went through and read the character bios in addition to some of the quests featuring them. I'll give a brief summary of my favourites.
Malfurion- This guy. Is a badass. Whats that skip? Some evil nightmare is invading an alternate reality inside a dragons dream? Better go in there and fight it. Then he gets stuck in there. Absolutely badass.
Deathwing- This guy is probably the biggest asshole i've ever read about. Period. What. A. Dick. Trying to tear holes in the world and what not. So rude.
Thrall- If there was a teenage mutant ninja turtle that happened to get magical powers and hold the world together - Thrall would be it. So much cool shit happens in this guy's story (Getting into brawls with Garrosh, fucking up Deathwing). You name something cool, Thrall has probably been in it somewhere.
Bolvar Foredragon- While the hearthstone card isn't that strong, the story behind him is amazing. After the Lich King was defeated, someone had to control the Scourge Army of undead scary things. This guy. This guy slams that crown on his head and is just like "i got this shit." Saving the world from essentially a zombie apocolypse. Between him and Tyrion, they are probably the most badass out of the Wrath of the Lich King story arc.
Si:7 Agent- This one may come as a surprise. But i had no idea that they had like a secret intelligence thing going on in WoW. Reading the backstory behind the Si:7 was really cool, including the establishment of the League of Assassins. Gives me greater appreciation of the rogue class as a whole.
Tl/dr: The WoW universe has many amazing stories to discover. I am glad i have found just a few to enjoy.
May your weather be sunny, and your cards not wet.
There are a lot of wow books out there, but what are widely considered to be the best are 3 books by Richard a knaak, collectively called the war of the ancient trilogy. Best wow lore characters and a very very fun well written books.
I can't even begin to list the quintessential lore characters and stories within these volumes. They're truly the epitome of the wow universe.
(in fact, knaaks story telling and lore are so good he actually created some of the current characters in the game and correlating quest texts and in game lore, the good ones they wouldn't let Chris metzen screw up)*reading chris metzin is like reading quest text)
While you're at it you should check Grom Hellscream's story ( the father of Garrosh), i know he's not (yet?) in the hearthstone collection but it's a good read. Also i liked how Ilidan turned out (Malfurion's brother), you should check that out too :) Have fun
What do you mean he's not in the hearthstone collection?
Deathwing - This guy is probably the biggest asshole i've ever read about. Period. What. A. Dick. Trying to tear holes in the world and what not. So rude.
He also tried to rape Alexstrasza and Ysera. And now he rapes your hand and your board! So rude.
Wow. Given that I never played WoW and thus only got to see the story up to War 3 w/o expansion, seeing what happened with Thrall is just a kick to the feels. In Thrall's defense, though, he's always had way too much on his shoulders and is mostly at fault for seeing too much of his old ally in his son and in losing his cool over seeing EVERYTHING going pear shaped when he returned. Tragic but I see it less of him being a villain and more being..well.. huma.e.rr an orc. I have a lot more respect for Garrosh though.
THough yes, that last fight between them was pure BS on Thrall's part.
I just realized now that HS makes for an interesting way to be introduced into the lore of the world along with getting nostalgia burns for those that experienced it. I know I'll not be able to take it if Arthas ever shows up.

Don't look up to Thrall just yet. Might want to read this. It's worth reading all of it. Warning: Warlords of Draenor spoilers.
Here's a relevant video. Again, spoilers.
