I am curious to find out what class appeals the most to newbies, and whether that changes as players get more experience.
My favourite class when I started out was Paladin. He was very straightforward to use and I found Consecration (a card you get early) to be super cool. This was, of course, before I levelled my Mage to level 10 and discovered the existence of Flamestrike.
Now, I don't really have a favourite class and alternate between multiple classes. I get bored when playing the same class for too long. If I was forced to choose, it would probably be Mage because of her versatile hero power, cheap removal, powerful secrets and freeze minions.
I got into hearthstone from world of warcraft and I had been playing mage for some years, so, as I feel like a I was born a mage, I chose mage to be my class in hearthstone as well.
I used to run rmp in wow, so I farmed cards for these 3 classes. Mage will always be my main and it was the first class I got golden hero with.
Had some love for destro locks as well, so I'm farming some warlock cards right now. I like the demon lock concept, even though it isn't that strong, but I have a pretty okay handlock atm since I had the cards to play giants mage.
But I think choosing mage is more about how I feel and see myself than gameplay itself. It was really strong in beta when I didn't had the cards to play a competitive deck and it became a pretty underpowered deck since the nerf. It wouldn't be my favourite class if it wasnt for world of warcraft that I played for some years.
I think gvg brought some power to mage and I'm happier now than ever, with the class.
I started with Druid Control. It's still the class that best fits my playstyle, but I've gone off playing it just because I already have it at level 60 with golden hero. No incentive to keep playing it. Now experimenting with Control decks in Mage, Priest, and Warrior.
I loved hunter way back in the late closed beta and rekt everyone with it and then suddenly everyone sarted playing it and i was like meh this was my class that noooone played and then they stole it from me cause i was showing them how good it really was, it was like i set the trend (ofc i didnt but it felt like it) :(
My second most favorite was druid, then mage and then rogue. Don't know why no one has picked rogue, i mean it is sao cool but i guess it is complicated and you need some cards for it tho
After some mage plays I got interested in rogue. I did'nt know who Valeera was, and I somehow liked the cards. It took me a long long time to play something decent, and my miracle deck was never completed until Naxx (the main reason was that I did'nt have Leeroy and I did'nt want to disenchant many other cards to get him soon). Now I find myself with no clear rogue archetypes built (I'm trying some kind of mech-tempo), but at least I found all classes to have a point if played nice. Overall my good guy handlock (did'nt have to craft anything, except for Sylvanas) who now just have to get more GvG cards like the Healbot.
When I first started I really liked Mage, found the class very basic and simple which is nice. My favorite now is Druid because of wild growth and innervate. They can make some very interesting plays.
Paladin was my first. Since it was first suggested by the Innkeeper, I started by playing it. Had some few fun games with it in the very first couple of days, until I was lying on my back frowning after many losses and thinking about how boring and frustrating this game can get and if I just should let go with the entire game and move on. That was when Hunter brought me back. I've always had this feeling of having something that includes a specific race or theme to gather around, seeing Murlocs silly and ugly, found my stray objective in beasts (versatile, colorful, and interesting). All of that was in the open beta when Hunter used to be the joke of the game.
Loving Hunter hasn't changed till this very moment, since the very first control Hunter deck I forged (with double Explosive Shot and a War Golem), followed by Kolento's midrange that terrorized the ladder after quite awhile, to Spark's and Naiman's fabulous creations.

You can't harass members who play Face Hunter, nor are they compelled to make preemptive apologies or justifications for playing it. They don't hack or crack their opponents' game, they simply play existing cards that form a specific deck. If you suck at countering Face Hunter, you should blame the designers, not the community.
Played Priest in wow (as main but had several as lvl cap), and was pretty hard core in Arenas running Disc Priest back in S4-7. Also played mostly Blue centered decks in MtG as Control and Priest in HS was just a natural fit. Kinda carried over the love and found out how much fun it is to use your opponents minions and cards against them. Haven't looked back =)

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible. - T. E. Lawrence
Druid was my favorite when I started, I loved how solid the cards were, and how you could rely on spells or minions.
I love math though, and soon I found Hunter to be more satisfying as I was having just too much fun in dailies taking out Zoos. I haven't minded at all the nerfs to the class (well maybe a little) and have enjoyed it throughout all its phases so far.
I really liked hunter due to it's straightforward approach to the game - I mean, going face.
But I do not know if the class has changed, I as a player changed (due to a bigger collection and some experience accquired) or both.
I started in early august 2014, and by the time the strongest deck was Aggro Beast with the UTH and buzzard combo. Then came the nerfbat and most hunters changed to Deathrattle and secrets deck, which lots of people think it's even worse.
Now the class has more tools to build control decks. That and the mechs, which works similar to the zoo.
Ah, and there is the Feign Death and Ghaz'Rilla too.
The first deck I had that I felt was pretty strong was Priest. I found a solid all-basic-cards build and enjoyed it, taking it all the way to (wait for it) rank 16! I had fun beating decks with more expensive cards in them, but eventually I hit a wall.
Still have a soft spot for Priest, even if its current for doesn't appeal to me in the same way.

When I first started, I loved the warlock and how it could just draw and draw and draw... but I was so new that I didn't actually know what a control deck looked like in HS, so I kinda scrapped it and then I saw priest. I thought wow, the value minions, card draw, and healing? Im in! That didnt work out however because I didnt have a ton of dust to craft everything I needed, so I put together a trap control Hunter that was... interesting... but it got me to rank 8 my first ranked season so I guess it was decent enough. I took a hiatus and now im back playing Handlock and Ramp (SR/FoN) Druid and loving them both.
*Edit* - I would like to point out that I started playing after leaving MtG (too expensive) where I had played semi-competitively for quite some time and loved mid-range and control decks.
I loved rogue in the beginning because, like most people here it seems haha, rogue was my main in WoW, so naturally I felt I had to love rogue here. DK was my secondary, so there was no real fight. Today... If I had more dust and money, I'd probably love to enjoy control paladin (still don't have Tirion =( ), but I might like ramp druid the most. I still have a soft spot for rogue though.

I started with Rogue. However unlike a lot of other players here, I didn't come from WoW. The real reason I played Rogue was because of TotalBiscuit's Lord of the Arena. It piqued my interest in the early beta card game, but I realized that TB played the same classes over and over again. So I got bored, until I saw him play Rogue (keep in mind this is before I got into the beta myself) And I fell in love with the class mechanics. The thought of comboing cards together, and the fact that Rogue had perhaps the strongest turn 1 play back then (Coin Defias Ringleader) made Rogue my favorite class. And I'm proud to say it still is.

A deck is successful not when it wins, but when it does what you built it to do.
Shaman was one of the first classes that I wanted to master but I had an average Shaman deck overall in the beginning. After months of playing, my main(highest levelled) class became Priest, but I still go to Shaman if the aggro metagame is getting to me.

In beta my favorite class was mage, so entertaining tutorial... And all these Fireballs, Frostbolts, Pyroblasts. Pew pew pew
I bring life and pffffffffffffff!
I think mage appealed first simply because you get to run the tutorial as mage thus starting out the basic deck card reveal!

Priest and open beta EU. I just liked the idea of the class. Priest was pretty horrible though.

Warlock because it had/has the best hero power. Since then Warrior but as I have Golden heroes for both I'm going to play another class next season.
Maybe Paladin for which I currently have 8/500 wins!
Hunter was my favourite class when I first started playing, I suppose warlock is probably my favourite now although I still hate zoo locks :)
