The problem is that still most murloc cards are terrible minions and only work in synergy while mechs are usually good minions just on their own. Why play this murloc that spawns a 1/1 when I can have Mechwarper as a two drop?
Murlocs can be crazy when you have 4-5 out because of the buffs but even then you run in the problem with AoE removal or just removal of the buffing minions. At the moment I don't see a reason to play murlocs over Mech or Deathrattle synergy based decks.
Maybe a few month down the line there will be some guy who figures out a way to make them work in a way nobody is thinking about at the moment but now? Yeah, Mech > Murloc.
The problem with super cheap minions that offer a ton of synergy is that they have to suck on their own. Imagine Murlocs actually having decent stats in addition to their crazy buffs they would be all over the place.
It's a way of balancing the tribe out and it's a problem within the very basic concept of Murlocs so there won't be a "fix" to it. However with the addition of more murlocs and having the shaman pushed a bit into this direction we've seen a different type of Murloc deck.
Instead of rushing down your opponent and putting stuff out from turn one Murlocs are actually more viable if played like a control deck. Many cheap early game removal spells to help keep the board clear early on - Rockbiter WeaponLightning BoltCrackle - and then drop a bunch of Murlocs with immediate synergy turn 5ish.
Those decks might one day become viable if they keep adding more cards to the tribe.
This.

Or are Murlocs completely overshadowed by Mechs?
Murlocs have better access to charge, but does that really even come close to how much stronger, more efficient, and more flexible Mechs are?
