Sorry if this is just regurgitated opinions I am new to this site, but I thought I would give my ideal opinion on how tournaments could work in HS.
I have not played a tournament in a card game, but I have many fighting games and I really like the spectate mechanic of tournaments you get to place yourself inside the action and view the strategies of other people in different scenarios. HOW I think it should work is that in tournament play between x amount of players after people finish their game they should have the option to view any other games taking place in what ever spectate fashion Blizz decides to implement.
Spectating is tough for card games I feel because there is always a risk of someone peaking in on your hand and anticipating what could be next. An easy option would be just to show no cards in the players hand and just view the battlefield. I myself would like to be able either switch between players, or just pick a player and be forced to spectate them the whole game and view their hand. A spectator only chat may be a nice feature to add as well so people watching can talk to each other about plays and just socialize which is a big part of card games.
Tournaments and spectating set up like this would be real fun and allow players to see how others play and be able to comment and interact with one another. That being said it would be awesome to have a bunch of tournaments that are created on this site because the community seems to be growing at a nice rate and people are passionate about their card games.
If you guys have any suggestions or information about tournaments it'd be great to hear your opinions and what you would like to see done with tournaments!
Well, while spectating tournament games would be awesome there will always be a way to get a advantage through ghosting your opponent.
Even if you restrict vision from both players hand you will be able to see what the players decide to play. Thereby if you finish your match before your opponent you can tune in to his match and see what kind of strategy he will use. "Oh, my opponent seems to rely heavy on swarming the opponent, better choose a deck with more AoE control." Yes, it is not guarranteed that the opponent will use the same deck as in the past duel but if it is his strongest deck due to his booster pack cards favoring the strategy than he will probably hope that the deck carries him to first place in the tournament.
Spectating a normal game would not have the same impact as you will never know beforehand that you are facing "this" opponent before you pick your deck. While restricting some more things for the spectators would reduce the advantage, there will always be possible to get a slight advantage with spectating in a tournament bracket. The question is when the advantage is small enough that it can be disregarded.
