Wondering what people think/feel about him. I hate the card personally but that's just me. I guess...supposedly it encourages people to not lean too much on one win condition etc....but it just feels terrible when it's played against me. I've been trying Relic DH and Artificer Xymog has been stolen literally 50% of the times he been in my hand. Sure it feels good to steal Sire Denathrius from druids but that's just because you can then breath a sigh of relief at the thought that you now have a chance to win... but Denathrius is another (huge) problem. Anyway for me it's just discouraging and makes me not look forward to playing the next match. Any other opinions out there?
I like occasionally stealing quest rewards and stuff like Daddy D or a hero card, but I also hate that it can be abused with macaw, brann, theotar stealing theotar, rogues and priest.
Having one thing stolen that maybe messes up your game plan I think is okay. Having 2-6 chances of stealing win conditions in a given game is not.
that’s just me. I wish they had a hard limit on its effect. Even though that isn’t a thing in hearthstone.

Maybe it would be better if it weren't a minion, but then it would be the first ever neutral spell
Having a card like him exist was much needed in this game. Spell-heavy decks were almost immune to Mutanus and Dirty Rat, and Theotar solves that issue. The Alterac Hero cards are ran in most (if not all) archetypes for each class and were previously uncounterable unless they were discarded or milled, which rarely ever happened. Theotar can also take the new Locations as well, and Locations will be permanent from this point forward meaning we'll probably see much stronger Legendary ones that only Theotar can counter. I despise him being played against me, but I love him just as much when I play him, just like Mutanus or Dirty Rat.
I just stole quest reward Xyrella with him. That opponent just completely wasted those minutes of his life. It did not feel good. Because I understood how incredibly discouraging that was for him. This card is going to just make people stop playing a number of decks that get destroyed by him. And then the meta will be incredibly stale once it settles. He'll be in every deck and every deck will be built around him. And everyone will feel like shit.
While hating the feeling of getting a card stolen I think Theotar was really important for the game. Some cards are just so crazy that you NEED some kind of disruption other that mutanus.
But having stuff in my hands makes me really nervous. Very often I play something like Denathrius for tempo when he's infused a little and try not to be too greedy.
I really liked playing quest priest in Sunken City but man, Theotar ruined it for me. As quest priest you really have no way to play around having the Xyrella reward sit in your hand for a turn. It got stolen so many times...
But the real problem for me is that the cards just get crazier and crazier in general. Having cards that are so powerful that the only answers are two cards that try to gamble it out of your opponents hand feels worrying.
This card pushes multi win-condition decks like moist shaman, when all cards in your deck synergize very well and removing only 1 or 2 cards from it by Theotar or Mutanus doesn't always break the game for a player.

Same happened to me today too. Theotar should have at least 6 manacost for this strength, but 4 is insane.
I think the discover mechanic can be retired in general. I think the game would be better in most cases witha simple card generation/draw instead of discover.
In this case, Theotar would be a much more interesting card strategically. You want to disrupt, but you don't want to give away your own best piece. Instead of being an auto-include, auto-play on curve, there would have to be some thought.

I don't think this assessment is accurate. Yes, getting your quest reward stolen feels bad, but then you were countered. What if instead of Theo, you played Mutanus and munched Xyrella?
The meta gets stale if there are no options to counterplay, if it's a pure rock-paper-scissors and the match is decided when it's found.
I think Theo and Mutanus are, from a design perspective, poor cards which are broadly un-fun (which is obviously totally subjective). Frustrating to play against when they hit your important stuff and frustrating to play with when they miss the things that you known are in the opponents hand.
That said, the current design of the cards in the game (OTK from hand) and the lack of interaction during the opponents turn make these types of card necessary. I use both in my Quest priest deck and the biggest challenge is deciding when is best to play them.
What I will say is that as legendary card effects they should be "one and done". Not - 2 more next turn doubled with Brann - looking at you Mr Shaman...

You were countered? Your whole deck got counterspelled by one card. You think that's fun and interactive? The game should be played on the board. Plenty of design space for counterplay there. Of course it doesn't help that these fools keep making cards like Denathrius that have to be countered before they're even played. Powerful wincon cards like Mecathun, Xyrella (quest reward), Denathrius, Jace, etc. shouldn't take over the game but there should be some room for people to play decks that revolve around a single card. These decks shouldn't be driven out of existence by one card. People play Relic DH in large part because they want to have a chance to pop off with the Artificer Xy'mox. They make a deck revolving around Topior the Shrubbagazzor because they want to play him and have fun making shrub whelps. The list goes on. Theotar steals the fun from these decks. It steals time too because by playing it you just made that person completely waste 10 minutes of their life because you just counterspelled their whole deck. Counterplay exists in Hearthstone in the form of tech cards. This is a step too far.

Yeah....the game revolves now around damage from hand and hand disruption. Unbelievable. That's like....the polar opposite of what the game should be. I'm sure I'm not alone in pining for how Hearthstone used to be with back and forth fighting for board and making powerful plays but also powerful counterplays on board. These noob devs keep trying to come up with cool new stuff to keep the game fresh but in the process they've lost sight of what made the game fun to begin with. The game right now is in the worst state possible.

If theotar single handedly discourages you from playing these decks then you are severely overreacting.

Artificer Xymox being stolen from my hand 50% of the time he's there isn't a reason to be discouraged from playing that deck? Not only is it good reason, it's reason to be discouraged from putting any card in your deck that makes you vulnerable. It completely warps the entire game.

50% of the time (don't believe it's that high) is not that bad. If your deck solely relies on Artificer (it shouldn't) then you are making a mistake. Even if he is stolen, that should not mean you automatically lose. If losing that one card means you lose then you were probably not going to win. Pretend he was at the bottom of your deck and if you still can't win then you have other issues than your 8mana legendary being stolen.
Sure having cards stolen sucks, but there is plenty of ways to defend against that kind of thing

The only way to defend against it would maybe be to keep your own Theotar in reserve to try to steal the card back. And to have a big hand...as if that's something you can always control. DHs don't keep big hands and Xymox is expensive and has to be infused so he's always there when they Theotar and always easy to find. The deck doesnt rely solely on Xymox but it doesn't have a great shot without him because guess what?....it's not that great of a deck. So Theotar makes a deck that can just barely get by in competition into a pile of garbage. Welp I guess none of us should play any deck like that! Everyone should only play really strong decks with multiple win conditions. Recipe for staleness in the extreme.

I don’t really know why anyone could hate it. He mostly punished hyper greedy, uninteractive decks.
