I tried the mode a little. Didn't seem at all fun to me.
My thought was that 2 high level players playing with all the goods could probably tell you with 80% accuracy who was going to win before the match even started. I could be totally wrong on that, but it just felt like a glorified version of tic tac toe where other than a little RNG there wasn't going to be much point in playing as the outcome was basically a foregone conclusion assuming neither player was playing poorly.
The thing is.. the pvp isn't the point.. They've explicitly stated that Mercenaries pvp is a side mode of a side mode
So many people wearing their babyrage as a badge of honor is amusing.
The questline has you doing one thing in 5 different modes, so chances are everyone is going to have at least one mode they don't like (for me personally, it was Battlegrounds and Duels, but at least I only had to slog through one game of Battleground and not "place in top 4" like the weekly I have to reroll every week).
The people proudly proclaiming that they're deleting the quest out of spite remind me of the people who "protested" Keurig by smashing their expensive Keurig machines (that, yanno, they already paid for).

if you cannot argue the message, then shoot the messenger right? The point you cannot refute is that mercenaries is horrible.
What does that even mean? Are you saying I can't refute an opinion? That's what saying "mercenaries is horrible" is; an opinion (albeit a seemingly popular one), not a fact that can be refuted. Yes, it's a deeply flawed mode, but it's still the one I personally get the most enjoyment out of among the modes Hearthstone currently has to offer.
..but that's not my point. What I'm shaking my head at is the irrationality on display. I get it. you don't like the mode. A lot of people don't, but among the 5 quests of the event, the Mercenaries one is probably the 2nd quickest to complete after the single Brawl. Stamping your feet and proudly proclaiming to the world that you're foregoing all of the other rewards and deleting the quest is, quite frankly, childish. It's like throwing out your whole dinner because there were 3 brussels sprouts on your plate.

Well it basically is a "I hate Mercenaries thread". There really doesn't need to be a dissenting opinion on here. Maybe start a more constructive thread discussing the various game modes and their pros and cons.
That being said, fuck Mercenaries. The mode doesn't even belong in Hearthstone because it doesn't have the fundamental things that make Hearthstone good. Randomness, variety, and replayability. The only thing that ties it to Hearthstone is that fact that you can buy packs. It's degenerate.

keep strawmanning, all I said is that mercenaries is so bad that blizzard cannot even get me to play it by offering freebies. Evidently a lot of others agree with me. The only one stamping their foot and crying is you. Truth hurts I guess.
OK, this is the third time I've seen someone complain that Mercenaries isn't random enough and.. I don't get it.
What do you mean by that? What sort of randomness were you expecting? Are you talking about pvp specifically?
The main mode has randomness in the drawing of cards and randomness generated by cards. Arena has randomness in both of those and the deck building. Duels is similar. Battlegrounds has it everywhere.
Mercenaries has almost none. Which for people who don't like it is fine, but it's not what makes Hearthstone what it is. Mercenaries is bland, predictable, and easily solved. Sure, there may be some in a PvE boss battle but again its predictable. It doesn't change the next time you play like every other game mode where card draw or minion pool is never the same between consecutive games or turns. Might as well play chess.

that's... not true at all?
The routes taken to the boss, every encounter along the way, the boons, the treasures after an encounter.. these are ALL random and quite often spell the difference between success and failure on any level-appropriate run, particularly heroic. The only things somewhat static are the pools of enemies in any particular zone and AI behavior within individual encounters (and even then there are some curveballs, such as some enemy comps not being a specific 3 enemies, but rather 2 + a random third from that zone's pool or enemies/bosses not using the same moves on specific turns all the time).

You can do duels and BGs afk, sign in, go afk. For mercs. You cant. You have to go to so many battles. You dont get that, boy.

Yea, but not really. That's a very small amount by comparison and only serves to keep people from blowing their brains in boredom out playing this mode. It's not even the good kind that gives you that holy shit I can't believe that happened high or low moment like the other modes.
Ah, so you enjoy big "anything can happen" swings. I can respect that even if I don't personally enjoy it (in fact, it infuriates me. It's why I hate RNGfiesta Brawls so much, probably why I've been enjoying Wild less and less each new expansion, why Duels, even when I'm on a win streak gives me heartburn and likely one of the reasons I don't "get" Battleground at all), but I recognize that others do.
Mercenaries doesn't lend itself to these swing. The only place you'd see them would be in pvp where two opposing moves have the same speed (and thus determined by coinflip) and whichever one goes off first ends up deciding the match one way or another.
So, I get what you're saying, it's just wrong to say that it's not random at all.
@Talenelat I don't understand the hate either. Since they added the training grounds, I like dropping 2 mercenaries there and collect the xp the next day. I'm just playing the mode to complete the offered tasks. After that I guess it's boring but so it's Hearthstone when you don't have any quests to do.
I've just gotten back into hearthstone after taking a break for a year. I've been enjoying playing the pve bounties, it's a nice challenge. I've not been focusing on grinding for coins or anything yet, maybe my enjoyment will end when I've beaten all the bounties. I've not played the pvp mode yet.
Oh it most certainly COULD be a >>>FUN mode and just like all their games but Blizzard only cares about making up quick cheap game modes so it can add a new cash shop.
Rewards and tokens are not done well and for good reason they want to sell token and merc packages in the cash shop.
The biggest line a game dev can cross is putting cash shop items in direct competition with in game rewards it should NEVER happen.
So they should just sell the game for 20 bucks fix the rewards systems and let players have some fun playing.Add some new mercs maybe 50 or so once a year for maybe 25 bucks and that is all pixels are worth.
I THINK people do not realize why and how rich Blizzard is?They become greedy rich because everything is DIGITAL everything is pixels it costs them pennies for the product all costs are from the development phase few people and low costs.it is not like selling in the old days shipping discs and or board games or physical playing cards there is a huge massive difference selling digital items it is 99% profit.

Honestly the PvE mode starts off pretty simple, but Alterac Valley and Onyxia's Lair had some really fun encounters.
...if you can make it through Blackrock.
Just deleted the quest.

People complain about rng in Hearthstone yet they hate Mercenaries because it's not random. Oh, the irony.
On the contrary, I'd say that's one of the best pros of Mercenaries.
