Mercenaries is the only mode I log in every day for.
Constructed lost me two expansions ago (or more), duels just infuriates me and battlegrounds doesn't entertain me.. at all. Personally I have no idea what people see in it, or why its so popular or why 60% of dev effort seemingly goes into this one mode I personally find zero enjoyment in, but I also realize that these are my personal tastes and different people like different things.
That said, Mercenaries has many issues, which is infuriating because a lot of potential is there if they gave it half the attention battlegrounds gets. Compounding this frustration is the monetization model, which, aside from coming across as purely greedy on its face, gives the impression that it's subsidizing the rest of the game.
So to answer the OP's question: no, they "shouldn't let it die". And you don't want it to either if you really think about it.
so long as it doesnt consume dev resources from other modes, I'm fine with it.
The only beef is it increases the number of patches they release, and they keep releasing them when Im at the gym just before my cardio session so I cant play the game due to shitty wifi downloads.
Subjectif question with no thought behind it. I Say no, they should not give up on Mercs and continue to make it better. However i actually Play the game mode which 90% + of ppl Who Say to let it Die dont Do.
Op should screen shot His Mercs lobby to see if he truly plays the mode while saying it should Die.

That's the whole issue.. it seemingly ISN'T getting any resources relative to the amount of revenue it must be taking in. I don't just mean fundamental design flaws (like the game economy) either.. I'm talking things like glaring bugs (like the Positive Equilibrium treasure not providing the elemental bonuses it should be) that are reported ad nauseam in the official forums and would seem like 10 minute fixes, but continue to get overlooked, yet we get pages and pages of (and I really don't mean to harp on it, but it's the biggest in-your-face example) battlegrounds updates every patch.
They said each game mode has its own team now. The flaw with merc is that there is nothing to do, PvP is none interactive and on mirror match is just a coin flip. PvE is dead and pointless as why do u want to maximize a merc then have excess coins on others, for PvP?
I think the excess coins will be handled with new year rotation to single mercs 2.0 so to speak, if they dont then yeah just let the game mode die its not worth the resources and having its own team.
To each his own , i do not think its worth buying Merc packs or supporting it until they get it polished and fair (coins and packs) But i still think its a fun mini game like BG or Duels . All of them worth playing but not supporting unlike Standard ... which is still sketchy whether or not to support it these days :P
I play a shitload of mercs, and I’ll say that the game does have a ton of complexity to it and is actually very fun once you get past the early low resource grind wall.
That said, the mercs packs are an absolute rip off and the excess coin accumulation with no way to turn them into skins or any other resource is an egregious mistake. These really need to get addressed if there’s going to be any long term viability unfortunately.
It'd be a lot easier to "fix" Mercenaries than it would be to make a whole new PvE mode. And I don't have any major problems with Mercenaries as a PvE experience, it just needs more actual dungeons and mercs to collect, and better ways to get the coins I want.
Mercenaries can be fixed. The question is why it hasn't been fixed yet.
It should have either a dust system or duplicate protection.
If they can't spare the resources to introduce a new system, they should just copy-paste an existing one and just arbitrarily choose the numbers. Anything will be better than nothing.
No it isnt. The PVE is very boring. No story, no replayability. What they should have done was take the RPG elements of Duels and add a nice single-player story to it and then an open world. Duels is a lot of fun but it sucks playing against some asshole with a broken deck.
Mercenaries need some serious working on. I enjoyed the first week or two, until they killed the farming strategy, where after the game just felt like a slower, more repetitive and story lacking version of pokemon. The game is a bit of a paradox where it just gets worse the more time and money you spent on it. This is just my own subjective reason for ditching the game completely.
Do I think the game deserves any monetary support? NO! It's a game in alpha at best, that has already been costing people a lot of gold and money. They could give a serious reboot and I would give it another try, but for now it's just made to be a little side chore or grind for those who like working while they play.
Game Play: The core loop and game play is fun. Balance is the big issue. No reason to throw everything out when you do have a solid base idea.
In Game Economy: Its really bad and lots of mistakes have been made. Now there are some data points, so those can be used going forward. Easier then coming up with it from scratch.
Real World Economy: The mode has made money and has the potential to make more. Easier to fix issues then to come up with something totally new.
Will it take resources from other modes? It should bring more resources that can be used to improve underperforming modes. If it can't then it will be stopped being supported. Look at Star Craft 2 and Heroes of the Storm. Great games, but not bringing in the money.
Why have they not been fixed? Anything with a publicly traded company can take forever. I am voting with my wallet by not spending money on products I do not find valuable.
I tried it, I wanted to like it - but the truth is Darkest Dungeon, or Slay the Spire is more fun to play. I don't know how they didn't look at Darkest Dungeon and think, "Hey, our game needs more depth, the hero cards need more personality...traits, our game needs more atmosphere, we need more actual loot and equipment, the gameplay needs more variation, choice and strategy, etc. We need more to this mode than the standard gacha number goes higher hook."
It might be worth supporting mercs to add in this way to the mode, but I get the feeling they're just going to churn out new cards ,new enemeries, new bosses..like the foundation to the mode isn't bare bones and soulless.
Can't win em all - they knocked it out the park with Battlegrounds, but Duels is a clown-fiesta, while mercs has all the depth of a puddle.
It is crazy that a company like Blizz released a mode not developed or so badly developed selling stuff so expensive in order to see if there was a business in it to maybe develop it in the future.
I think they should try and focus in improving this. At least giving us something to do with the extra coins. I think those Chi-Ji challenges they tried were a step in the right direction, but without any real endgame goal this mode is not going to last.
I'd personally be happy if they tried another dungeon run adventure like in previous years. Sometimes it was more of a miss (Rastakhan was frustrating due to the little chances you had to actually choose what you wanted to play and counter the increasing unfairness of the fights, while Witchwood just had too few options and did not even let you repeat the boss battles), but even at its worst it was often an enjoyable experience.

Is mercenaries worth continued support or should blizzard just let it die and work on a better pve mode?
My vote: let it die. Try again.

Yes, It is worth supporting

If they totally revamp this mode, sure. Otherwise just let it rot.
I reckon it's a neat mode but the money-sink threw me off.
Playing on my youth is getting old............. need $, see it coming! Hates asparagus. https://harrah.newgrounds.com/

Mercenaries does nothing for me too but I came up with a crafty solution, I just don't play it - job done.
