With every expansion and with every patch HS is turning more and more in an infantile and childish direction. The game is getting cringe and feels like playing one of these soulless animated disney tv-series. Even the new Mercenaries game mode is extreme casual, undemanding, boring and a complete waste of time. Nevertheless you will need a lot of money to get all the cards and mercs to be competative. And I am not talking about that cosmetic "funny" but cringe hero portrait bullshit they are releasing daily at an unbelievable outrageous price!
So Hearthstone seems to transform from witcher into paw patrol and I can't help asking myself who the target group will be? From the direction in which HS is tourning I would say infants and casuals. From investments to be taken, I would say financial potential adults.
I like the new art. It's much more lifelike. The original was fine, but it seems a bit dated now. Paler colors, going for a more realistic look but feeling a bit less charming too. This art today fits way more with the spirit of Hearthstone, which is meant to be a bit goofy (it was always this way if you check classic flavor text). I know edgy teens don't like that blood, gore and booba are not depicted anymore, but once you get over that phase, I think you start to appreciate what it is. As for the alternate portraits, I love that they are putting resources into it. If you think they are too expensive, don't buy them, vote with your wallet. It stops them from getting even more greedy with pack prices hopefully. As for Mercs, I think it was a failure, but maybe enough people took the bait to make it worth it for them. All the money was spent and it won't come back. It also sent them a very dangerous message that they can launch a very buggy, untested game mode with unreasonable economy and full of bugs at premium price. And enough gullible people fell for it.
As for the target group, I would say 4-100+. It's targeted for everyone. A product doesn't have to be 18+ to be good. Look at Avatar: the Last Airbender. A very wholesome cartoon that anyone can enjoy regardless of age. It might be too complicated for a child, but probably anyone from the age of 12 onwards can get really good at it.
If you dont like a game mode, dont play it. I never play mercenaries or BG, since i dont like it. I dont even know how the art looks like :)
But we had that trend before. As an example in WoW. Vanilla and TBC were kinda grim. Then when Pandaria came out, it was like some Walt Disney Panda Bear stuff.
I guess its cool there are so many different modes. So everyone can chose what suits best. It can really be played by everyone. When it comes to age, its not for the younger generations. Its to expensive. At least for me. I wouldnt play it for free.
I was thinking about this as well when I saw Vulpera Toxinblade the other day. However, FitB is the greatest offender in my opinion as it introudced the abomination that is Guff Runetotem. This charcarcter just resembles Hearhstone becoming a children shitshow.
If you feel threatened because you're online trading card game doesn't contain enough anime titties and edgelord furry artwork then I'm guessing you're probably on an incel watchlist somewhere.

The target group is the same as it has always been: horny teenagers.
Unfortunately, the asian market imposed some rules against it. So, the profits became more important than the horny teens.
But, in order to keep their parents' debit cards near, they made the graphics more appealing. Do you know how small children are being hurt by commercials on tv because they are very...colorful? Well, all kids get attracted by them. That is what they are doing now.

I miss good old booba, otherwise new arts are just fine.

Happens to every IP. As it will get smoothed down of its rougher edges to be more appealing as time goes on.

Honorable mention goes to pirate warrior(Stormwind Freebooter, Bloodsail Deckhand, Ratchet Privateer)
