after reading few people's amount of maxed, extra coin amounts, I decided to sum all my unusable extra coins since I was farming pve hard for maxing out characters, f2p btw
it's 75269 currently. wow. blizz have to do something about this. recently I opened 88 packs and 30 of them contained "nothing" but I doubt it.
And if there was something that big coming they probably would've revealed it already way ahead of the patch. Like they did with the XP building.
because I max'ed like 42 mercs and that game me 42*3=126 packs (pack reward from tasks 16,17,18). I opened few of them immediately, then I started saving them until new mercs arrive. so after doing tasks for about 2 months I got 88 packsin the corner waiting, none of which I've bought (:
So another 20 days went by. Do we have any news? Do we know when this predatory system will end?
prolly never unless they think the gamemode is dying and they are losing money for the lost interest. thats when they gonna try to revive the game by making the horrible initial system just a bit better.
Yes, so let's keep beating this drum. Because I don't know if it is because my MMR is high but my queue is very long and always with the same people. This is not a good sign regarding how many people are playing it, for sure, like now, not many anymore.

How much is your MMR right now? Because my queue is faster than before and I am facing a wider variety of oponents this month.

My MMR is quite high. I am in the top 50. I have more than 1400 now. But it was high also last month. I practically play only mercenaries.
Hm, sounds to me to be expected that you have the "top player" issue of facing the same ppl and longer queus. Top legend players in constructed face mostly the same problems. I don't think there can be anything done about it though. I wouldn't like to face a top 50 player as a little gimp and getting destroyed and top 50 will stay at "50 people", regardless of how many ppl play.
I am sure they are implementing or trying to find a solution about the surpluss. Something they should've thought about before implementing the mode at all tbh, but still. Maybe a dusting system or reverting a fix amount of unusuable coins to gold. Although they might be thinking about just adding another level to the abilities. We will see, I guess.
I am not totally sure. Every start of the month the MMR is 0 and my queue was also long. Regarding adding a new level of the skill I think it is a bad solution. 1) because with the higher skill you will one-shot characters, so speed will be even more relevant, 2) Because you will address the issue only in the short term, in the long term people will be again with a surplus of coins.
The only solution, to me, is to convert the surplus in dust or something to craft what you want (portraits and coins for other characters). The issue is how much of the new currency give to players. Because the surplus, like now, for some players is really huge. I have nearly everything maxed, so you can imagine how much surplus I have for example for Rokara, Varden, Samuro and company (which are the most common characters).
Anyway, with this predatory system, I am not able to play the new mercenaries, I have nearly everything full, except the new mercenaries and the resources that require me to full the new mercenaries are the same required to a player that is starting now mercenaries. Yes, because without duplicate protection and without the use of the surplus, by math a new player has the same probability as me to max out the new mercenaries.
It is since November that we are waiting. I have no other words to express my disappointment with Blizzard's work that it is only for short term profit and not at all customer-related. Blizzard is digging its own grave with these behaviours and destroying an idea (mercenaries) that wasn't bad. Because PVP in my opinion is very fun, PVE is terrible and repetitive.
Anyway, there are the data. Mercenaries is going pretty bad. It is not a secret (see attachment, source Firestone). And probably the main reasons why mercenaries is going so bad are: there is no duplicate protection, surplus of coins, high entry barrier in order to play it, boring and repetitive PVE mandatory. Because, as I said PVP for me is fun, but the majority of the people have not even possible to try it in full.
BG anyway, is by far, what keeps this game alive now. Blizzard needs to act fast in mercenaries if they want to save it.
Yeah, adding another level isn't a good solution, but it is a solution. I also agree on converting them to something universally usable, like 'coin dust' or gold, would be the best solution - how much and into what is probably the crux. But I have no insight in the team working on merc, so I can't tell what is holding back a coin surplus solution (and how big/urgent the issue is, generally speaking). 4 months is not that long though, I doubt ppl ran into that problem on day 1 and it needs to be properly coded, the finance team probably needs to give it a go and whatnot.
Still the top player issue will remain regardless, it might partially be bc of the hidden (staying) mmr too. I just wanted to give another possible reason, they are additive ofc.
Anyways, I wasn't opposing that merc is doing pretty bad right now. In fact, I completely agree on the points in your last paragraph on why that is. I also think the rewards for finishing a bounty are pretty lackluster and don't feel rewarding aswell - even for someone who has nothing maxed out.
BG is free, duels imo is fun, arena a bit less fun but still ok and standard is very dependent on the cards currently playable. So I will judge it after the rotation next exp. Wild, for what variety I encountered, I found pretty healthy rn. Even if it is intended to be grindy, merc is too much of a grind for me. Cool idea though. I hope they can save the mode.

So, do we know when and how Blizz will address some kind of use for the mercenary surplus coins (as they promised)?
Do you have any news?
Nope. :)
Of course not, and please keep on enjoying the mercenary mode by buying our not in the slightest overpriced bundles! :)
Hey. =)
Let me spend 15 dollars to upgrade just one of my merc's abilities. Not fully, of course.
I mean you don't have to buy anything, just get lucky and grind your whole free time, or quit your job if you can't even pay for our cheap bundles! :)
Hey. =)
I'd say such a feature will most likely come with the first big merc focused upate. 2.4 should be the mini-set, so 2.6 (in 2 months) seems likely.
Battlegrounds also got its first big update in the last month of the expansion following its release btw.
Cool! At least we have a hope.
Now let's hope that the only use will not be to purchase the skins. :)
Joking aside, this might be the real change for Blizz and it would be terrible.
I got over 11k unuseable coins and that while i'm a FTP player. Not sure how many coins whales must have but it must be disgustingly much and sad.

Mercenary is awesome. Dust system shud be implemented.
Opened 88 mercenary packs? But... Why?

It's not about RNG. It's about math. Kappa.
