No doubt mercs is BS money grabbing, haven't touched it beyond the free merch. At least duels' cards are available in multi formats, mercs is a closed mini game.
So, the most played mode, most viewed mode, utterly f2p, gets more attention from devs albeit f2p, is the failure. Troll crybaby much?
Maybe its his personal opinion. I feel the same way. This week i had after a long time a quest to finish top 4 in battlegrounds. Its was painful to play. One thing is the AFK part, the stuff fights for itself? The other thing is the bald dude between the game. I trade a minion and then i wait forever...and its just not ending. I dont know how long such a BG takes, but it feels like 20-30 mins. And my only part, why i have to sit at the computer is to pull a minion to my side from the bald dude. So actively i spent maybe 1 min form those 20 mins. Really?
But then again, my friends also play BGs. Everyone likes something else. And i spent all my gold on duels, which they dont play :)
I get ppl dislike BGs, and I respect it, but calling it a failure is just trolling. Fact is, there was a tourney final yesterday, the various channels had thousands of peeps in, and unlike GMs - the toxicity is at minimum.
Game wise, look, the AFKs don't buy anything, they sit there and give you a free win. The turn timer is a good thing, because BGs is maybe random hits, but there's strategy behind it. Just find a good hero, get tempo, get to 4 dead people, concede. You can do like a friend of mine does - tanks his mmr while afk'ing, then gets a lobby with 4 spots unplayed, ez 1500, not to mention he gets achievements much more easily. It's still better than 500 mana (facepalm), 5 nonladder game wins, 50 hps, and other weeklys.
So much salt in this thread, it's very amusing. It would be interesting if Blizzard posted some stats referring to the % of players in each game mode so we could actually see which were more popular than others.

Battlegrounds and Standard are very popular (many millions of players)
Arena and Wild are moderately popular (a couple millions of players)
Duels and Brawls are not very popular (many thousands of players)
Adventures are barely popular (couple thousands of players)
Mercs is non existent (hundreds of players)
I don't see any salt in this thread, I don't think you understand the concept. Complaints in this thread are mostly legit and truthful, this isn't what being salty means. I don't see what's amusing about any of this either.
I dislike Duels, but I can see it being fun for people. Mercenaries on the other hand has no fun whatsoever in its design. Whoever was designing that has no business designing games at all.
Whoever said Battlegrounds was a failure must be trolling. They may not like it, but it is objectively a huge success with tons of players and appears to be the most popular game mode. It's super cheap too. You can be completely free to play in that mode with ease.
I spent more time on Mercs (maybe 10hrs total) before abandoning it forever.
Duels is the better mode though...still terrible... but better - it's a clownfiesta. If you like clownfiestas I guess I can see why you'd like it. It should have been a lot better than it was - Dungeon Runs were a good time. But in a head-to-head mode the power levels possible remove all sense of player agency. This is something Blizzard needs to re-learn - it is why battlegrounds is popular and remains so, and constructed is getting less popular - flashy broken shit removes player agency.
If you liked Mercs, just buy Darkest Dungeon and don't look back - it costs like 5$ has great atmosphere, depth, difficulty, art....soul. Mercs has zero soul and the depth of a puddle. It's mobile shit-show cow-clicker.

Factually incorrect. Duels is more popular than Arena and Wild. Think it came up on one of the devs Twitter AMAs. And when Duels is bigger than Arena and Wild, I suspect it's also bigger than Mercenaries (which is probably the least popular mode - meaning it's the biggest failure).
Lol I didn’t think my comment would hurt so many people. So you are saying since bgs is F2P it’s the better mode . And saying there is strategy to bgs you must not go casino a lot you literally pulling lever for everything in that mode.

Yes. F2P is a huge advantage, especially since Mercs is premium price. There is strategy in BGs, of course. That's why you have people constantly at the top of the ladder while most active players are stuck around 7k. There is a lot of slot machine in it, but the better player will extract the most of each lever pull and up their overall win rate, which is what sets them apart from the average player. Mercs is about winning your speed ties, there are no variables to make the games interesting. Sorry but Mercs doesn't stand up to even the knees of BGs. Definitely not worthy of a main menu button.
An argument could be made that Battlegrounds is the biggest failure - if Blizzard ultimately makes more money on Mercenaries. Battlegrounds has less monetization than the rest of the game, and had none when it started. Meanwhile, although it's clear that Battlegrounds is played way more than Mercenaries, it's possible more money has been spent on Mercenaries. Possible. If that's the case, Mercenaries would be more successful than Battlegrounds from Blizzard's perspective, from the perspective of financial success.
Duels is harder to parse out because it is monetized, but that monetization is tied into Standard. More people play it than Mercenaries, though. Game mode popularity by play appears to be Standard and Battlegrounds in the #1 and #2 spot (probably Battlegrounds in the #1 spot), Duels at #3 (a distant #3), Wild #4, Arena #5, Tavern Brawl #6, Mercenaries #7, then the various PvE adventures filling out #8+ (I suspect the Kobolds & Catacombs Dungeon Run is the most popular PvE adventure by virtue of Duels existing - I think Blizzard saw enough people playing it to justify a new, similar game mode with monetization; so that'd be #8).
But there's a number of people in this thread who have confused disliking something to mean it's a failure. And, nope. That's not how failure works. Play-wise, Duels is a bigger success than Mercenaries (and a bigger success than Arena and Wild, too). Money-wise, it's possible that Mercenaries has enough whales that it's doing better than everything but Standard. Doubtful, but possible. Although probably not long-term.
Duels was never meant to be ambitious, Mercs was the most hyped up brainfart in Blizzard's 30 year run of game making, and is a 2021 Poke-FF wannabe that gets absolutely obliterated by their 1992 Smash Hits, The Lost Vikings and Rock'n'Roll Racing ....oh yea, the good days, brother.

Blackthorne will be in Mercs one day.

The next mode, which hasn't been released yet.

Mercs.
There's no question.
Duels is just more hearthstone.

This thread is a whole lot of "whatever I don't like personally is a failure".
Yo. Same.
I hardcore played for 1 month. And when the novelty wore off It felt like I wasted a month of my life.
Mercenaries man, not even once.

Both are borning.
GvG launch, when eSport ≠ rngSport.
How so? Most people are in agreement that mercenaries was a huge failure. Only a minority are making it about what mode they hate.
Mercs was simply by how long it took to come out, only to just be Raid Shadow Legends but worse

Duels IMO.
Mercenaries is bleh. It's not good, not horrible; it's just exists.
Duels on the other hand actually sucks and is not entertaining or worth playing.
