They don't run a lot of minions, and the ones they do run tend to get played out quickly, so there's a pretty good chance Mutanus the Devourer will eat an owl.
Mutanus in a shaman deck is especially punishing because you can run 2x parrots and if you miss on mutanus, one or both parrots won’t miss.
^this, plus if you have Revolve, that gives you 5 cards in total that counter it (I play evolve shaman so revolve is useful anyways). There are times when I still miss, even with those counters, but it's rare and since you can tech against it, Owl warlock is not even close to last exp quest warlock when it comes to being annoying
I really lol'd when I saw a guy in this thread say: counter owl lock with 5-5 pirate to make them overdraw. Hahaha what kind of counter is that 😂 give them more draw and hope they maybe overdraw one card that maybe will be a combo piece...
Best counter is kill them with big minions. But yes, the deck is toxic.. warlock is overtuned in too many departments: draw, removal, healing, and mana cheat. And they can have very good tempo to when they want, altho they only use tempo in questlock
It's like playing against bots. The game feels like running in auto-pilot and there are no tools offered to counter their win condition. It makes me wonder why did they bother giving control decks so many tools this expansion? As a Warrior, I can be at full health with 60+ armor and still lose.
If by "as a Warrior" you mean that you play a heavy control deck with either a very slow win condition or the Galvangar OTK as your only win condition, then yeah, that means you are playing the perfect match up for an Owl Lock.
You put no pressure on them, and let them just draw through their deck and into their combo. That's a match up you are SUPPOSED to be weak in.
The results there are about similar as the results Face Hunters and Freeze Shamans have against you, i.e. a very low chance of winning.
Hearthstone these days is about match ups. And this is a bad one for you. But other decks that match up better against Owl Lock, would have weaker match ups against your current deck. In a perfect world this means you have about a 1 in 3 chance to beat Owl Lock, and Owl Lock has about a 1 in 3 chance to beat aggro decks, and aggro decks have about a 1 in 3 chance to beat your Control Warrior.
You have the choice to play the match ups and take losses to bad match ups for granted, or you have to switch decks and play something you don;t mind the bad match ups with. THere's not much else you can do.
i dont have seen so much verbal diarrhea in a while.
You're going to lose a rock paper scissors match every now and then. Sometimes you queue into the wrong opponent. Best option is to just play what you are best at and hopefully win more than you lose. Wish there could be more said. You make a deck that counters them but you will run into others not playing it who are effective against you.
I'm pretty surprised that owl warlock is getting so much hate honestly. It's a very strong deck but so is the paladin deck and rogue also has absolutely busted early game. I'm running four silences in order to be able to beat paladin and even that is not always enough. Owl warlock's combo is also countable. The easiest ways is to put down lots of big minions and force them to play many of their combo pieces (if you don't outright win). They are also vulnerable to weapon removal, spell counters, mutinous, and glide. They are a really strong deck but feel fairer than other combo decks in the past imho. Death Knight paladin and Togwaggle Druid had more armor and healing and quest mage (ungoro) could freeze you forever.
If owl warlock is too strong in terms of win rate, it's also one of the easiest decks to nerf. Making some spells cost more or removing the shadow tag would probably do it.

It's a combo deck. Don't be surprised when those get hate - the HS community absolutely despises combo. That's one staple that won't change.
People saying "beat it with big minions" are incorrect. I had two 5/20 minions on turn 5 (just priest things) and the lock was able to remove both using Mo'arg Artificer x 2 and only a few cards (which were discounted). I even managed to re-build a wide, divine shielded board again and he still won with the otk from 30 health. I think it must have been about a 100+ damage from the owl combo.
Sure Mutanus is a possible counter, but the odds are so low you might as well not bother. He's no good against most other decks and he doesn't really do much against warlock because they run quite a few minions.
It's early days, and maybe face hunter will push warlock out the meta (again - great!), but this time I'm not so sure. I think the addition of Dreadlich Tamsin & Full-Blown Evil have really cemented the control-otk warlcok archetype.
p.s. I'm not saying it's unbeatable (very few decks are) but it seems quite overtuned atmo
p.p.s how the fuck does warlock get a hero power which draws three cards for 6 mana?

You know why people hate combo decks in hearthstone? Becuase you can't do shit about them other than "win before they get the combo". You literally play through the game watching them solo collect the combo pieces while removing your board and then they win. Wow
It's a poor game design imo, and with all the card draw that warlock now has, it's really consistent
So many people defending the most obnoxious deck since odd warrior (and that mage deck that locked you out, don't remember the name). Most strategies posted here rely on luck, and are by no means a viable counter... sigh... wanna know the real reliable counter? Celestial Anacondra druid: delay celestial until the first weapon has drawn all its charges, keep the second celestial for the last turns. Never lost a game against owltk; been losing to pretty much everything else. Worth it? Perhaps. We all lose today.
I’ll be very surprised if this deck makes it past the usual round of nerfs before the devs go on holiday break. A Phylactery-based Warlock deck would still have a lot of potential without the OTK potential through the Owl.

Combo serves a purpose - that of constraining greedy control decks that lack finishers. Lack of interaction with combo has always been an issue in HS, honestly - as a combo player, I do want to see more cards like mutanus, like Loatheb, that can disrupt combos, because then there's more to play around if possible or just play into if you can't play around - but that's a decision that depends on hand/board.
Combo also has very polarized matchups, which is another reason why people hate it. I had a 95% winrate against zoolock when I was running freezemage - and that would have been higher with less errors. I know I was making some misjudgments about reach. But the main way to play against cmobo has been to pressure them, and some decks can't pressure enough to get combo pieces used defensively.
I'm not saying people are wrong to hate it - particularly after the QLock mess where combo became ridiculously fast - just saying that someone shouldn't be surprised by the hate aimed at a combo deck.
Been playing as quest warrior with almost no chance.
Then i Just added one rustroot viper for weapon removal and crush them most of the time now. Deck is just too slow without mana discount. Added benefit is that many strong decks have weapon (i.e. cariel hero card) and if not just trade it.

Like Warlock has been for the past four expansions?
Warlock is the most toxic class since Tickatus arrived. Quest was even more toxic but disappeared after the nerf.
And now we have an even more powerfull (cause much faster) and annoying OTK Deck
I instaconcede vs Warlock, no matter wich Class im playing, im bored of this playstyle, endless turns with carddraw and healing, even if i could win the match i give a shit, playing @ legend anyway and i dont want to waste lifetime trying to kill a warlock while they playing their own game until they can OTK me for 4305395 bazillian damage Turn 8
Its spuid, its unfun, its toxic, its boring, its uniteractive and its unbalanced.

Combo decks can be fine.
Four Horsemen Paladin was fine. It was a strong deck but it wasn’t toxic because you actually had to put some thought into playing it. Opponents could also play against it because it didn’t have an infinite amount of board clears etc.
The decks that rely on drawing cards as fast as you can whilst having ridiculous amounts of healing and board clears to hit the combo aren’t fine. There’s no skill required in playing these Warlock decks because you have so many clears you don’t need to save them because you can draw so fast that you’ll never run out.
Mecha’thun Priest was the first deck I remember seeing this absolutely horrible style of play in. And Blizzard have continually printed cards that enable it ever since… from Tickitus to the awful Quest cards and now this stupid Warlock spell.
Warlock in general is a class that should avoid having OTKs just because it can draw so well. It’s ruining the whole class. Used to be my favourite but I can’t play it anymore.

This deck has all board clear an heal in the world. Only stealing their combo pieces is what can win you the game.
