I'm struggling to understand what they had in mind when Team 5 came up with this one. What strategy is it suppose to support? Tried everything and nothing works.
Spells casted by other cards (Clumsy Courier, Iceblood Tower etc) wont be copied by it, you must hard cast the spells yourself, so it doesnt rly fit in a Big Spell deck.
Wildfire is recasted before the new hero power is in place (not a bug, thats how battlecries work), so it doesnt support ping mage either.
It obviously doesnt support mage decks that run many low mana spells either, as it doesnt generate enough value.
WTF is this piece of shit supposed to do then? Was there ever a more pointless hero card than this one? Srsly asking..
Boohoo, sucks to be a mage player. Just use the quest and make everyone concede because it's the most boring deck to play against.
Nice, nasty response. Very mature. Maybe, just maybe, OP doesn't like playing the questline and wants to, you know, try a less boring deck to play. I'll pretend to be shocked that your name is Aggro.
I'm disappointed to hear that the card has not yet been particularly good. Since I don't have it (but liked playing mage before it became "spells and nothing else"), I had high hopes that we could see a more interesting archetype this expac. That said, we're still very early in the expansion: perhaps someone will come up with a deck that isn't mindless to play and painful to play against.
I tried playing a couple of variants of big spell mage but so far i've had very limited success. The iceblood tower seems to be underperforming since it empties your deck pretty fast and you have no control over it. The mass polymorph is just way too situational and so far hasnt been usefull in my games. The only positive thing about this deck is rune of the archmage. It's a super solid card in my opinion. But even if all that goes according to plan you just dont have a clear win condition with this deck. Will try to include some burn cards like alextrasza and see if that makes a deck better.
My second version of it was a reno-big mage ( since i am a wild player) and dont even get me started on that. Deck is super fun to play with luna's pocket galaxy but before you get your big cards online, you're mostly way to behind in the game.
I love the archetype but it doesnt seem to be a competitive tier deck so far. Lemme know what kind of big spell deck were you running. But in my opinion this is the best expansion we've had in a while. Alot of diverse decks.
Did you check VS or any other sites to look for decks that run Magistrate before posting this? Did you consider the meta won’t have much definition between 2 weeks -> 3 months after the expansion is released? Still plenty of time for cards that don’t seem viable to get there - especially considering no one know what the mini set will entail..

Ignore the trolls, they eventually realize no one cares :).
Im F2P and opened it in my packs so ive been trying to make it work, but im convinced its a dud, it conflicts with everything mage is trying to do.
Big Spell mage might have a chance though, just not with this crappy hero.
I agree that it is trash. Doesn't fit in big spell mage as in that deck you still want to run minions that discover (low-cost) spells, so it's really random what you will get from him. Doesn't fit in Mozaki or such type of Mage deck either. The infinite scaling of the hero power seems way too slow, given that he costs 8 mana, each ping costs another 2 and you also need to find the right target. The 5 armor is the best thing he offers but sorry that should cost 1 mana not 8;)

- its not good i agree, very deck build limit / anti synergy. - best spell to abuse is mask of cthun - best fit is minion tempo deck + mask as a finish burst, - obviously not suitable for long games, - maybe meta will change or it will get a new good spell to abuse in future mini-set
Yea the card is trash as it is now, If it was 6 mana it would be playable by recasting Fire Sale to get the board back from agrro decks and give you some time to cast 1-2 heropowers
There's so much wrong with this card to be honest. Wildfire still working when you switch over would be a nice change but it still makes no sense since the battlecry expects you to run high impact high cost cards.. which wildfire decks don't have. It's also the only hero card that relies on honorable kill as a hero power mechanic which is an absolute failure in terms of constructed.
It feels like it's supposed to be an endgame grinder mage win condition but never gets any continuous value unlike the other hero cards. Honestly just remove the honorable kill garbage and make every hero power increase its damage by 1. It'd still be extremely slow, probably too slow for the meta, but at least it could be a win condition.
The only problem with this card is that honorable kill is a trash mechanic, Magister Dawngrasp basically doesn't upgrade your hero power, and that's why he sucks.
The battlecry, while limiting deck building quite, heavily, is good, and can potentially support more spell schools in the future.
It's definitely one of the wort hero cards made, but those are still pretty powerful. Just throw it in whatever mage deck you'd like for a value turn. If you try to build your entire deck around it you'll probably be disappointed, but nobody asked you to do that :)
Your list actually inspired me to create my own version of it :D
I'm currently still testing the cards since i love the big mage archetype but gotta admit, i've had limited success with it. :D. I want to include Alanna in this deck, but so far the 10 - 9 cost minions like Kalecgos and Alexstrasza seem way too slow. I even tried removing the iceblood tower since its very situational.
Cards i've added to my list: Frostweave Duneoneer, Snowbind harpy, naga sand witch, puzzle of yogg saron. Right now i'm testing this deck with frost lich Jaina. I seem to have a hard time closing down games.

I agree that changing the Wildfire interaction would be the biggest help, but I do not agree that the hero card needs "big" spells in order to be good.
If you use it after a few carefully curated spells of different schools, it can be quite effective. Wildfire (if fixed) + Mask of C'Thun + either Frost secret + Arcane card draw = a pretty good turn. If Wildfire worked, the win condition of the deck could be Mordresh, not Magister Dawngrasp.

Clearly you don't understand how to use the card properly.
It is obviously meant to support the existing quest decks. So once you get quest down, playing the hero draws you 4 cards or gives you another discount, aoes for 5 or deals 4 + gives you a deal 4 1 mana, and freezes 3 enemies or deal 5/freeze 1 (or armor I suppose)
8 mana Flamestrike+ draw 4 + freeze anything left over is a good effect. It's a little RNG and you can get screwed ofc but that's the intention.
Mage's been doing great for a long time, probably deserves some duds.
The scaling hp is probably meant to be a slow, inevitable win condition. Except the power level in standard is so high 'slow' is worthless, and mage already has ignite for the same purpose anyway.

I think it's decent enough to include in any deck running Mask of C'Thun.
Yeah Big Reno is so much fun. I am experimenting with it at the moment an prop will for the whole extension i just love it to much ;)
Have a look at my list and tell me what u think mate https://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/1399682-big-spell-reno-mage

Possibly a punishment for having such a strong annoying Questline throughout the last 3-4 months of UiS meta

Mask of C'thun doesn't have a school, so you can't cast it with Dawngrasp.
Plus, big problem with Dawngrasp hero power is it tries to do something mage already does more reliably with Ignite.
