Is it smart to spend 80$/€ on part of a game? No. Neither is paying 20$ for a meal you could have cooked for 5, but you had a good time. I see buying HS cards as one of the ultimate luxuries. The cards are worthless, time limited and will give me nothing but a minor reward kick and deckbuilding hype. My alcohol budget is way higher, but HS is easier not to buy. That's where my doubts come from.
So do you enjoy spending this money? Do you feel spoiled and excited from it? How much money is your hobby worth?
I'm actually kind of excited for the new cards, but... man, the cheap bundle is $70 CAD in the shop.
I just can't justify that right now...
I might go with the Tavern pass again, because I think I got good value out of during this current expansion. But that's probably going to be it this time.
You might try another link for shopping. Im living in Hungary (part of EU) so when I google search for Blizzard shop it gives me a link to the EU shop by default. However if I use the US shop link manually I can get cheaper prices. Compared to the EU shop the US prices are like 13% cheaper. So I use this link: https://us.shop.battle.net/en-us
Edit: So I did the math, in your case, Google tells me that 70 CAD = 55.24 USD and the cheaper preorder costs 50 USD in the US shop. Its about 10% cheaper in your case.
The answer to your math is no. When you have an account with a different currency from what you are purchasing you have additional costs from the card itself (and this cost is generally not so low), "currency spread". See what you actually paid in your bank account after the transaction.
If you are using a different way to pay you might even lose money in this way.
In conclusion, what he will actually pay will be: 55.24 + 4%. Using paypal
And I am not even talking about the conversion rate which can make your deal terrible.
Do you mean 50 + 4% which is 52? Still cheaper. By the way Im not using Paypal, Im using Mastercard.

I think that it is better if you step outside this topic and you don't advise people about how to lose money in a forum related to a card game.
I wanted to double-check the numbers before replying so I did that.
In my country we use hungarian forint (HUF) but for hearthstone I can only pay with Euro (or USD if I use the other link). 50 EUR = 18432 HUF. 50 USD = 16441 HUF. I have bought the smaller preorder from the US shop and it costed me exactly 16551 HUF. Blizzard probably uses a slightly different conversion rate, thats why I have paid 0.6% more than I was expecting. I have still saved about 2000 HUF since I havent used the default EU link.
These are the facts. If you use Mastercard like me and you live in the EU, you should use the link to the US shop since 50 USD is cheaper than 50 Euros.
Lots has been already been said in the thread, I'll just add my 2c as (mainly) wild player ->
I'm playing semi-casual since beta mainly as F2P.
Since release my only bundle purchases were: - Whispers of the Old Gods Pre-purchase - cause of the card back (which I used until I got to legend) - Masters Bundle of the Thunder King Hero - cause of hero skin (still using this shaman hero skin) - Aranna Starseeker Bundle - cause of hero skin (still using this DH hero skin) (if I knew they would re-introduce both card backs and hero skins for gold at later stages I would not buy these as well)
Ever since they introduced star system in laddering I'm climbing to diamond 5 in wild for loot, then mostly playing taverns / casual for quests (with addition of 5 mandatory ranked wins each week). Currently I'm sitting @ ~6k gold and ~10k dust (literally all gold was farmed this expansion)
No need to pay for anything unless: - you are playing (or planning to go) hardcore - you want to have all cards in collection - something interesting caught your eye - card back, hero skin (and you don't want to wait until they reintroduce them for gold)
At least in wild cards don't rotate so fast so there is really no need to spend money Not to mention what's the current state of ActiGreedzard
Absolutely no way of preordering. I used to preorder for 3 years, but the meta has been getting more and more aggro and combo OTK. As a player who likes control which is now pretty much nonexistant, I don't have much to do so zero incentive to spend.
I will preorder the small bundle and get the tavern pass, which is what I did last time. I use Amazon Coins so save a bit of money through that. I enjoy the game enough to want to pay, doesn't matter what anyone says.

I appreciate the effort here to figure this out. I guess there are probably ways that I might be able to save a little bit of money, but it's still a lot to me overall.
I'll have to see how I'm feeling closer to launch and make a decision then. :)
I've gone back and forth with pre-ordering, often depending on my financial situation. However, it's not even a question for me right now that I'm not doing it. The constructed Meta has me barely playing it as opposed to battlegrounds which is free, and arena which I can often make a little back from in addition to the card pack and play experience.
I might be stepping on a minefield here, but I'm also not spending any money on blizzard products until Kotick is gone. This is just my own personal decision, I think you should do what's right for you. I just have so many games I like or want that I can easily find another place to spend it that doesn't feel so icky.

Nah, it's the same for me. There are ultimately three factors that persuade me that preordering is a bad idea atm, for me personally.
1) I'm clearly not enjoying constructed in the current state of the game. 2) I still feel regret over paying into mercenaries, which while my fault, does play a factor. 3) Kotick.
Maybe any one of these factors wouldn't be enough normally, but when combined they become very persuasive. At least for me.
Of course, I’m not poor or something so I don’t mind dropping a couple hundred on packs now and then. I probably will just buy both the bundles and none of that post launch stuff as I doubt I’ll be playing too much (the meta looks legit awful with the quests plus heros) but yeah, there you go.
Every time i consider buying a bundle i remember that once the expansion hits there will be plenty of people complaining that they only got 3 or 4 legendaries in 120 packs or something like that. The tavern pass has enough value without potentially making me feel like I got robbed
The pre order is a good deal based on their past pre orders. However its way too expensive to justify paying for a deluxe AAA game. I understand its a card game and card packs are a gamble like the physical side of it. Its just not in the cards for me. If you do justify it and pre order I wish you luck on your openings!!!
Already preordered 2x small bundles (for me and my partner), will also buy Tavern Pass (2x) for extra gold and will buy a bundle with 2 legendaries (also 2x) when it eventually comes out.
I will also buy 100+ packs for gold and it should give me a great deal of epics (I didn't craft any for Stormwind! only disenchanted - had same amount of packs; but yeah, I was very lucky).
Given the fact I get 2 legendaries for free, 2-3 from reward track, 2 + 2 for preorder and future bundle I'll most likely collect most important legendaries.
I got beta access one week before release. I bought 30 GvG packs, all the adventures and one tavern pass because I really wanted Zyrella. Oh, and even though I don't ever play hunter, I bought Alleria because I was drunk. I like her voice, but she's just sitting in my collection. I don't have Sylvanas, a character I actually like.
Bottom line, I don't like spending money on packs, because you're not guaranteed anything good. I really wanted that Mage portrait last expansion, but the price is too high if I just want that.
I am so happy I havent used any real money, because when I started playing this game was actually more awesome than today (beta). Everything have been shit since shudderwok. Would feel like blizzard stole you money.
Same like buying DRD2 and after the bought they remove online mode from it but keep the money.
So no, dont buy preorders. Do not finance this corrupt and evil company

I don't care being legend or competing with others. It makes me feel stressed.
I like theorycrafting and trying new decks.
So, I preordered.

I also don't pre-order, I was never motivated to do it
The real question is "do you enjoy the meta?"
I know I don't and nothing I've seen makes me think this will change with the next expansion.
No! Wild mode is broken, I dont want to support Blizzard for doing bad work, questline cards should be banned
I will preorder the small bundle and get the tavern pass, which is what I did last time. I use Amazon Coins so save a bit of money through that. I enjoy the game enough to want to pay, doesn't matter what anyone says.

F2P is the way
English is not my native language, so, with a high probability, mistakes were made.
