Mercenaries is a flop, in my opinion, primarily because of the crafting system. Players have almost no agency in which Mercs they can unlock, because they need to collect specific coins.
Obviously, the current HS crafting system is very bad, but at least you can dust cards in order to craft new ones. Mercs is another level worse.
You have tons of agency over getting what you want. You grind the bounties for the mercenary you want. Eventually you get the coins you need/want. In addition to the random ones you get from packs and daily tasks. It's a million times better than Hearthstone's system which just gives you the illusion of control but is *extremely* time gated on resources and the only way to get things is to *entirely* rely on the random pack system and hope to hope to hope you get what you want OR just open a TON of packs.
You don't even need to open packs in Mercenaries to get what you want at all. Packs are mostly supplemental unless you want the cosmetic portraits.
Like you might spend a half an hour doing a run and not get what you want, but I prefer that to opening my one pack for the day and getting 2.5% of a legendary.
I think there should be more ways to get coins, and the tasks system should be massively improved, but to say you don't have agency is patently false.
wasn't expecting any in-game changes today (except the free packs), but I was kinda sorta -hoping- we'd at least get more -info- about their plans for things.. particularly maxed coins and/or duplicate protection
There is duplicate protection. If you get a portrait before a new merc it's because you got that portrait in place of *coins* not in place of a mercenary.
WTF dude, i read three or four post of you in other threads and you are always on the company side, whats you f***ing problem? Are you from blizzard or are you the worst grandson of Stephen Candy??
When you have some kind of bug up your ass about making sure the world knows a company is "evil," I'm sure it can look like an objective voice is actually taking the company's side. But that's not what I'm doing.
I have been very critical of Blizzard on many occasions. A couple of years ago when they were taking more than six months to nerf obvious problems, I complained about them on a regular basis. I have taken extended breaks from Hearthstone several times and skipped entire expansion cycles for that exact reason.
Similarly, I've mentioned many, many times that the random-pack business model is predatory and too expensive. When it only applied to Hearthstone cards, people would just shrug and say, "That's just how collectible card games work." Now suddenly when the exact same system is used in Mercenaries, people act like the it was invented by Satan himself. So while I do agree that the monetization is not great, I am bemused by the hypocrisy of criticizing it in Mercenaries while having ignored it in Hearthstone for the past seven years.
However, I do not mind pointing out that the act of offering products for sale is not inherently evil, that luxury items like video games are not a human right, or that no company wants its paying customers to be unhappy.
On the other hand, I will always admit that Blizzard definitely wants its free players to be slightly unhappy -- because that is the how free-to-play games make money. If you want to be treated like a customer, you must first become a customer.
FortyDust is spot on. If money isn’t made, there is no Hearthstone. The thing is, Hearthstone is more affordable than many Gachas, and that is probably one of the reasons it’s more profitable. Volume of consumers reduces reliance on a small base of whales.
I mean "duplicate protection" in the sense of receiving coins for maxed mercs from non-bounty or task sources.
Packs, pvp rewards, etc. Sources of "random" coins. It feels -really- bad getting maxed coins from these sources, especially packs.
This kind of duplicate protection will never happen, it would increase the value of random coins by way too much.
There will be a way to use these excess coins in the future. Im not sure when or how but if they plan to keep this game mode alive, they have to come up with something for sure.
Right now its not as much a problem as some of you think. Today is the 1-month anniversary of mercenaries. I have played it every day since, I have almost all of the mercs, 53 of them are level 30s and I have completed over 300 tasks (about 10 task per day on average). So I think I have played (and payed for) it more than the average and I have only 2 maxed mercs. Right now this problem doesnt affect a huge percentage of the playerbase, but on the long run it will, so its inevitable that team 5 will have a solution for this. IMO if you think that the devs want to keep their playerbase, you shouldnt worry about excess coins, they will have a use eventually.
I played a lot during the first week, but didn't know about and didn't have much of a chance to do the Mysterious Stranger grind before it got changed. Since then, I've spent maybe 3 days (maybe 4-5 hours per day) trying to grind specific mercs, otherwise only played enough daily to clear the task board and get 1 pvp win. I bought the $5 welcome bundle and have spent probably about 3k gold on packs.
I have all mercs except Van Cleef, and all of the rest are 30 except for Jaraxxus, whom I only crafted a couple of days ago.
I have excess coins for the following maxed mercs:
I have some mercs that are somewhat close to being maxed but I try to avoid getting them maxed. Like in the beginning I have played a lot with nature comp and I have farmed Malfurion a lot, but he is still not maxed (the other 2, Brukan and Guff are my maxed ones). I could have farmed Malfurion more, but I will get there soon with random coins so there is no point in doing that now.
Im missing 2 mercs, Illidan and Jaraxxus. I could craft both of them but I wont, especially Jaraxxus. He is the hardest merc to farm, because Ahune's mechanics. I mean its not "hard" but it takes a lot of time and it wont get better even if we will have power creep in the game so I plan to open the missing ones in packs from task 16-18 packs.
Ahune's easy with just Antonidas, Baron Geddon and the healer of your choice, just tedious (mechanically cannot be completed in fewer than 10 turns on HC).

I think by far easiest solution is getting Hunting Party with Lady Anacondra. You max out her healing, give her the treasure that makes her heal also target herself (thus alloing her to heal hersself twice per turn), then enjoy the views as Ahune kills himself without you doing anything.
Of course, you can also get Hunting Party with another beast, Tavish or Rexxar, then add Anacondra to heal it.

True enough, but I tend to shy away from treasure-dependent strats just in case RNGesus forsakes you.
Hearthstone mercenaries in my opinion is really a flop. All streamers left it. Probably also because it is terrible to watch.
What makes me mad is how bad is developed and even worst that we cannot have our money back. I mean if I purchase a Triple-A game I have 14 days in order to ask for the refund if I make the pre-purchase of Hearthstone packs no. I always hate Hearthstone for this reason. I believe that this is a scam.
I made the pre-purchase I found your game terrible, I want my money back, instead, no it is not possible.

Some streamers had early access to the game mode, so you could have a pretty good idea what are you paying for. IMO asking for a refund for an RNG-based lootbox product is unreasonable, because everyone would ask for a refund until they have above average RNG in the packs.

Sorry, but it is not unreasonable at all. I don't know where you live therefore I don't know if the law regarding this topic is equal in all countries, I am not a lawyer, therefore I can only talk about my country, in which I know how it works because I asked many times the refunds. These laws I think are related to the country in which the company is selling.
In my country (I don't want to mention my country, but it is in Europe) works in this way. If you purchase a game even 30 years old you have 14 days of refund policy (but not only for the games, in everything is the same way). Don't you know the game after 30 years that it is out? You play it, you didn't like it, and you ask for a refund. You can even finish it in 14 days. And this is quite fair in my opinion, although 14 days is probably too long. You buy instead something online? No refund at all. Or better this is the general unwritten role but it is not true. (Because at least in my country there is like a hole in the regulation and it seems that for the law these activities of in-game purchase don't exist at all, but the law regarding the refund policies is related to everything, therefore also for in-game purchases).
If you purchase something on mobile, for example, if you ask the developer of the app for a refund he will tell you to go fuck yourself (I am talking about in-game purchases, like Hearthstone). Well, you can ask it to Apple (if you have IOS) and they will reverse back the payment if you ask it back within 14 days.
The issue, "excuse" of the developer is always the same: We don't have the technology installed to put back the account before the purchase. Which is bullshit.
Because this is the law, they don't want to reverse the payment? Well, Apple will do it.
Blizzard instead? No. No intermediary in the middle so you cannot say to nobody to reverse back the payment as "THE LAW" says. They are the law, nothing back sorry, they will tell you to go fuck yourself.
So, do you think that is fair? It seems like abuse to me.
Anyway, one try could be to make the in-game purchase with the mobile and in case ask the refund to Apple.

I think we cant apply the same rules for a full game and an in-game purchase. Even if we could, we should consider the RNG factor. Actually I think Blizzard should allow refunds for stuff like adventures and mini-sets, since they have no RNG-factor at all. But when it comes to packs, "loot boxes" its a completely different story. You have all the information what are you paying for, and you know that its a gamble. There is a fair chance that you dont like the outcome, so in cases like this the refund is unreasonable in my opinion. Its like paying for a lottery ticket that doesnt win so you want a refund. Or paying for a Magic: the Gathering booster which had bad cards in it so you want a refund.
I get it that you didnt like mercenaries, but you should see the refund issue from the developer's perspective. They just cant allow refunds for RNG based products because that would screw up the whole idea of selling RNG based products. Everyone who had a bad pack opening luck would use this function, not because they really want a refund, but because they want to try their luck again.
lol mercenaries dead as duels. Team 5 is incompetent and Activision is a shitshow.

Sorry but I don't agree at all.
1) As I said if you make an in-game purchase with the app you can have a refund. I did it with many games that have in-game purchases of packs, treasures, chests, envelopes and so on (so with random stuff). The answers are always the same, the developer will tell you that they cannot restore the payment, Apple will do it. So, I don't know if the same thing can be done with Hearthstone if the purchase happened with the app, in this way you have Apple as an intermediary and maybe you can have the refund.
Blizzard in any case is acting like a dictator, cash cows like these companies should know the value of reputation. But Blizzard no. When you ask for a refund for an in-game purchase to Apple, they will grant you the refund (it is also a loss for them, they have a % for every microtransaction). Probably Apple knows much more about the value of reputation, at least on this topic.
2) It is not a lottery ticket, the product is not consumable. This is bullshit in order to not give the refund. Nothing is consumable because it is digital.
3) If people want to try luck with purchase, refund, purchase, refund and so on, in the case would be allowed, as it should, the refund as written by law, this would be a Blizzard's issue. Blizzard cannot say that they don't know how to deal with this issue and therefore they cancel a right of the consumers. Find a solution in order to protect you but you cannot cancel the consumers right.
4) The RNG topic is only a shield to not give the refunds and it can be abused. So, if the issue is the RNG as a developer you can build what you want and then something with RNG purchase in order to not give the refunds. It's just an excuse to override people's rights and do whatever you want. And here is the deal.
You want to develop a triple-A game. You can now develop it in 3 ways, always the same game but with 3 random weapons in order to start the game. RNG, no refund.
Hearthstone mercenaries in my opinion is really a flop. All streamers left it. Probably also because it is terrible to watch.

Blizzard is acting like a dictator? Team 5 is developing a free to play game. Hearthstone is free to play. Mercenaries is free to play. Let that sink in. You can try it for free then you can make a decision if you want to support it then you can pay for it. No one forced you to pay for the pre-order. I wasnt sure about the pre-order but Blizzard gave early access to some streamers and I could see at youtube what am I paying for. I liked it, so I have used my money to grab those lootboxes. No one forced me to do that, it was my decision and I could decide based on the footage I have seen before release.
It is not a lottery ticket, the product is not consumable.
Because lottery tickets are consumable? Its the same thing, you buy something and you know the expected value, but you dont know the actual value until you buy it.
I dont know where do you live, or what laws are applied in your country, but when I pay for a product I am NOT entitled for a refund UNLESS its not what Im payed for. If Im buying a new car or a washing machine, I can ask for a refund IF ITS BROKEN. Otherwise I get what I payed for, end of the story.
If people want to try luck with purchase, refund, purchase, refund and so on, in the case would be allowed, as it should, the refund as written by law, this would be a Blizzard's issue. That would mean I can go into the casino, go to the roulette table, place a thousand bucks on black, and when the ball rolls on red I can get a refund, right? Because Im the consumer and it is my right to have a refund on every purchase I make in life by law.

This thing could be really abused.
Sorry, but I dont agree at all.
Blizzard cannot say that they don't know how to deal with this issue and therefore they cancel a right of the consumers. Find a solution in order to protect you but you cannot cancel the consumers right.
That would mean I can go into the casino, go to the roulette table, place a thousand bucks on black, and when the ball rolls on red I can get a refund, right? Because Im the consumer and it is my right to have a refund on every purchase I make in life by law.
Sorry, but thats not how it works.
Yes, lottery tickets are consumable, you scratch them.
If you buy a new car or a washing machine in my country you have 14 days to change your mind and to return it (it must not be broken. You can simply realize that you don't like the colour and return it). Even a pair of underwear if we want to be precise you can return it.
Roulette is different, you pay for a bet, Hearthstone packs is a purchase, not a bet. When I make the order of the packs I didn't bet anything, I wanted the cards, then there is a different rarity and outcome ok, and therefore an involved risk but I know what is the worst outcome (1 legendary in 40 packs). It is an effective purchase with risks involved. And as I said, it is under refund if you ask it with Apple in the middle for example. In my country works in this way, sorry. There are probably roles involved with the country in which the company is selling. If you want to clarify the topic, you can list the laws. Anyway as I said in my country works in this way. Therefore, for me, it is not acceptable at all the not refund policy. It is a scam that might involve abuse. Like sell the pre-order and left the game abandoned and very bad developed like Blizzard did with mercenaries.
Anyway, we are not here to talk about laws. I already expressed my opinion. You are free to think about what you want.
I will leave anyway this sentence: "If you bought a product or a service online or outside of a shop (by telephone, mail order, from a door-to-door salesperson), you also have the right to cancel and return your order within 14 days, for any reason and without a justification."
There is duplicate protection. If you get a portrait before a new merc it's because you got that portrait in place of *coins* not in place of a mercenary.
I mean "duplicate protection" in the sense of receiving coins for maxed mercs from non-bounty or task sources.
Packs, pvp rewards, etc. Sources of "random" coins. It feels -really- bad getting maxed coins from these sources, especially packs.
FortyDust is spot on. If money isn’t made, there is no Hearthstone. The thing is, Hearthstone is more affordable than many Gachas, and that is probably one of the reasons it’s more profitable. Volume of consumers reduces reliance on a small base of whales.
Well, my personal experience:
Cariel-1990, Cornelius-752, Samuro-713, Blink Fox-454, Brukan-954, Tamsin-276, Xyrella-680
Remember to keep ur free packs until next Merc drop for easier gains. Thats what im doing.
Click to see my Hearthstone projects:

You are supposing badly. In Europe, it is quite common a 14 refund policy. And also in UK after Brexit.
