So when you open 100 packs you get on average arround: 4200 to 5400 rare coins, 3500 to 4500 epic coins and 2800 to 3600 legendary coins. Note that you get coins for Merc's you dont have! So those coins are divided over all Mercs you can collect.
On average this means you get arround: 233 to 300 per rare Merc, 206 to 265 per epic Merc and 165 to 212 per legendary Merc. Leveling all their skills to breakpoint (wich is level 3 for most Mercs) costs 450 coins. So you dont even reach that. Should you want to max a Merc's skills and 1 of their equipment slots your looking at 1700 coins. If you do all equipment it will be 2760 coins.
All in all your mainly getting a large variety of low level skill Merc's to chose from instead of a maxed out team that grinds the F2P players into the dust. The F2P player will be forced to stick with mainly 1 Merc team but it will be arround the same strength as those who pre-order. And if the F2P players focus on grinding coins for these Mercs, he will be able to keep up in power with the pre-order players. But once best 'Merc combinations' are known the F2P players will be at a obvious disatvantage. Though only slightly because of the average breakpoints for Merc skills. The 'task system' that each Merc can do should help reach those breakpoints. (though some Merc's will have expansive breakpoints)
Conclusion: pre-order packs = PAY FOR FUN! Even if you buy all pre-orders your just getting a large variety of Mercs but not much power. If you want to PAY 2 WIN you need to buy over a 1000 packs!!! I dont think the amount of whales who do this will ruin PVP. But obviously the top spots in the rankings will be reserverd for whales/streamers.
Personaly I think this game will be boring and frustrating in just a week for players who go F2P, because they get stuck in their grind with the same Mercs. Players who pre-order will probably have alot more fun, but might get frustrated later on because getting their 'Merc Build' at the proper skill level could take ages.

You are ignoring that teams are matched by strength so they will be matched with each other and will have no advantage in gaining top spots in the rankings
But if your fan is to get everything maxed out on day 1, then yep, you need to pay A LOT. I doubt that many players think that this is actually fun.
Sort of. I think the mode looks fun to play casually at least, so I'll probably try it out in that respect. I might get the Sylvanas bundle because it's fairly cheap and I think she looks like a fun merc.
I'm not... too concerned about the PvP or it being pay to win. At least not initially.
It's just weird from Blizzard that they aren't more transparent with the numbers and the costs. Like I get it, there is this FOMO concept, but if people don't know what they might be missing out on, chances increase that they just don't really care about it.
Not giving more info about the costs, both in terms of money and gold, and the rewards (especially in terms of a "dusting" system) will make people (me included) think that it's just going to be very expensive, even if that won't be the case ever. That's one way to kill a hype, if there ever was one.
The gameplay is quite interesting but these boar fights at the beginning of bounties are boring. I can see pretty difficult close matches in PvP, though, where both players have to think hard what the opponent will do to ruin their gameplan. So there is some sort of interaction at least, which standard has been lacking recently.
Honestly, I spend too much on HS as it is. Mercs is likely going to be evergreen like standard HS, and I'm not about to throw another $50 - $150 at the game every 4 - 6 months. The gameplay vids haven't been exciting enough to change my mind on that. I'm not about to spend 1 - 2 AAA titles worth of stuff every cycle like I have on Standard all these years.
As someone else already said, Blizz got too greedy here. While I realize they needed something better monetized than Battlegrounds, the model they're using for Mercs is just too much of a kick in the wallet for me to even consider getting sucked in to it.
Conclusion: pre-order packs = PAY FOR FUN! Even if you buy all pre-orders your just getting a large variety of Mercs but not much power. If you want to PAY 2 WIN you need to buy over a 1000 packs!!! I believe they also mentioned a similar to their other modes MMR-system, which this mode will have. And this is quite opposite of what they say that it should be more or less equal strength teams. I am aware that you will face equal strength teams only in the beginning, and then when your mmr-rating will increase you will face more and more powerful teams. Because otherwise what is the point of collecting mercenaries and spending money if you could be the best and climb ranks with what you have in equal-strength battles?
I'm not going to preorder anything, mainly because I'm still disappointed in what Mercenaries actually turned out to be. I thought it would be something like Slay the Spire or, even better, like the Arkham Horror LCG. I LOVE single-player content, and a single-player RPG mode with rogue-like elements sounded perfect for me - instead we got this...
i dont expect anything from mercenaries, but im gonna play it day one it comes out, even if it is boring, im going to play until i get to a certain point of the game that is not tutorial/basic... at that point im going to ask myself questions:
- did it constantly draw my attention?
- if i continue to play, how expensive is it going to become
- is there enough variety
- do i see myself playing this over 1 year?
and then im going to make up my mind... at this point its like duels and battlegrounds, once in a while when im bored in ranked.

This. I was skeptical seeing a steep preorder price for something we know nothing about, but the promise of a StS or LCG like Arkham horror, Netrunner or LotR was enticing. Even a deckbuilding mode like Ascension or Star Realms would have been fun. The end result is mediocre at best and still too expensive.
I'm more interested than ever, but I'm not going to pre-order. I was always hesitant about that, but the videos made it clear to me that the parts of the game I like best -- leveling up, collecting, upgrading -- would be massively short-circuited if I buy a bunch of packs. I'll get plenty of free packs just by playing, and that will keep me happy for a long time.
I think buying packs is more for people who feel they need a certain Merc to complete a team for PvP, which will never be a huge concern for me. I may eventually spend a few bucks if the shop shows me something other than packs -- maybe a standalone skin or a specific legendary Merc -- but I will avoid purchasing coins or packs for the time being.
I hope they do come up with something to sell me, because I'd like to support Mercenaries financially. They just don't seem to understand why I like their game or why buying packs would make it less fun for me.

I too would be interested in spending a bit of money on a new mode. I’m not sure if it’s the same since you are saying purchasing takes away from the progression, but it really comes down to value for me. I don’t think this is a main mode, more like battlegrounds which is priced vastly less than standard/wild. If there would have been all 3 bundles for the price of either lich king or Diablo, I probably would have bought it. Maybe even all 3 characters with one bundles worth of packs for full price would have been enticing enough. What price point and contents would have gotten you to preorder since you want more progression/grind?
I play the game for about since naxx came out and loved the game ever since. I saw some videos and tutorials but it does not impress me one bit. I spent money on HS and I will probably spend more, but not for this mode. Basically, I'll just play PvE until I get bored or whatnot.
I'm not interested in PvP in that mode or any sort of grinding. I might change my mind in the future but one thing is sure that I won't buy anything for that game mode.
Conclusion: pre-order packs = PAY FOR FUN! Even if you buy all pre-orders your just getting a large variety of Mercs but not much power. If you want to PAY 2 WIN you need to buy over a 1000 packs!!! Sure. They said that they will match by both team strength and MMR. It isn't the opposite at all when you use both. Matching only by team strength will result in an awful experience. Imagine hearthstone in which they always match you with a person who has a simmilar deck strength AND simmilar skill level. This is that
If they will do what you say, it will result in an awful situation. Let's assume you are a high-ranking player with few maxed-out teams. New expansion arrives. They give you new heroes. You can't level them up in PvP without DESTROYING your rankings. And if you have no interest in grinding PVE you are screwed. You can get coins to max out abilities by buying a RIDICULOUS amount of packs but Merc XP can't be earned in any other way but playing.
Maybe (I'd even say likely) they will add another PvE mode in which there is no matching by team strength and you'll require maxed out teams but the initial one isn't like this.

What is the point of collecting mercenaries if having top tier is unnecessary for high rank? 1) Some (many) players like the collecting aspect itself 2) Beating highest tier bounties in heroic mode.
I m actualy pretty hyped for this mode! Normal Hearthstone has been dead for me for over 2 years or so. I sometimes play Battlegrounds but I mainly watch kripp play it while I eat LOL. Now that I know that even if I would buy all pre-orders It wont ruin the PVE fun, (though it's probably wise 'for fun' not to spend your coins on the really low level parts) but instead add to the fun: 'You can make loads of different Merc Teams' instead of being limited to the few Mercs you have. And as I mention before the amount of coins you get are just enough to get 2 skills to breakpoint (skill level 3) but atleast you will have that for all Mercs you get. I think that's a much better way of doing things instead of letting players have 1 maxed out team, and nothing else.
Having seen most of the streamers that got early acces I think the PVE content is going to be very interessting and HARD in the later parts. Mainly because the PVE part this time is actualy going to be rewarding, so Blizzard needs players to FAIL. Unlike how they did things before and make it so that everybody can get it done...
I am a bit concerned about the PVP part that happends after 1 week. As in that you will be running into the same 4 or 5 Merc teams because those are the best so everybody is playing them. (including you) Just like standard Hearthstone becomes super lame with the same 4 or 5 decks each season.
But while I m thinking of these possible Merc Team combinations I m getting more and more excited with the much larger ways I can make them work. Especially when I m realizing that the NO-BRAINER Teams like: 'Diablo + Fire Mercs' is not going to work and that a good working Diablo team is looking quite different from the original fire setup. Not to mention that other NO-BRAINERS like Team Orc or Team Human aint going to be that strong. Atleast not compared to the more 'creative' Teams. So this all in all got me really hyped! It has been long since ive been this excited about a game.
And about the visuals... I like it clean as it is! The animations would just get in the way of planning and playing lol. And after a week your bored of them anyway. Allso when I see Raid Shadow Legends, it feels like I m on a Casino website with bells shining everywere just to get me spend my money. HS still got that nice atmosphere, though the shop gets flooded with more and more useless garbage. Why spend money on a lame 'Mega Bob' skin that loses to the original and worse Kripp actualy uses it...
Though I have not yet done so I m pretty sure I m going to pre-order all. I m still bussy thinking up new Merc Teams, but it starts to look like I want to play with 90% of them lol.
What is the point of collecting mercenaries if having top tier is unnecessary for high rank? 1) Some (many) players like the collecting aspect itself 2) Beating highest tier bounties in heroic mode.
Sure, but I mean from Blizzard perspective. Very few players will spend money for beating pve content in this game or for the collecting aspect. They have to convince you to spend a lot of money and they can only do this through pvp side of the mode. And if this will be through pvp, then it will surely be not even-strength matches. They can say you, that, look, your characters have the same levels as opponent's, why isn't this an even-strength match? But your rare team will compete against legendaries, or their mercenaries will be with fully leveled abilities and equip, and so on. There are a lot of questions about that.
What price point and contents would have gotten you to preorder since you want more progression/grind?
If I did want to buy coins, I'd have no problem at all with the bundles as they are.
But because I'm weird and want to actively avoid buying coins, I'd rather pay for portraits alone, without the packs. Because owning a portrait technically unlocks that Merc, it would be even better if the in-game shop would look at my collection and offer me a portrait of a Merc I already own.
Best of all would be exclusive portraits that cannot be crafted. I cannot fathom why they don't have these from the start -- it seems like such an obvious, harmless way to entice people to spend cash. But in all cases, I'd want the ability to buy the cosmetic item without also buying a bunch of coins/packs/mercs.

Funny that I m most interested in the pve content and expect dissapointment from the pvp part. But that's just from my experience with normal Hearthstone, there has never been a meta that i really liked. It was allways first 2 days are fun after that I lose interest and wonder if the 50 euro/dollar pre-order was worth the 2 days of fun.
With Mercenary's I expect only like a week of fun from the pvp part. Mainly because the whole game is so new that it will take longer before players know how to play best. But after a week it's going to be like same 4-5 merc Teams every time you play pvp, and you will know wich Merc they will target first, wich ability their going to use and so forth, so hardly any suprices and you probably allready know if your going to win or lose. And if your going to use some strange weird team, when the meta is settled, it's just auto lose.
Wich is why I really think & hope the pve part will keep things interesting for a much longer time, specialy if you have alot of different Merc Teams on hand. It's a much more fun experience to test unusual Merc Teams if the pve content is challenging enough, but not out right unfair, as you experience in a pvp settled meta.

I think the blizzard influencers have done their job if you are thinking of preordering something that is:
- expensive
- unknown - no idea what you are buying
- subject to the same matchmaking bullshit to make you spend more
- a mode which has been around for years and is already perceived as a bottomless money making machine
You are ignoring that teams are matched by strength so they will be matched with each other and will have no advantage in gaining top spots in the rankings
