the game mode isnt pay2win, its pay2progress. Representing the worst elements of gachi gameplay loops.
You cannot accelerate a mercenary's XP gain (leveling up) with cash. You can only upgrade Abilities and Equipment that way. There has to be some reason to buy packs, so I don't know what you expect.
We've already seen how many Mercenary Coins you get from low-level Bounties, and it's safe to assume those numbers increase at higher levels. We also know roughly how much it costs to upgrade things. It's not going to be that hard to upgrade your stuff without paying.
Do we? I'd like to know what's the rough eestimation, because I've had that concern for a while and I somewhat consider that the main thing that will say if it's really wworth giving much time or not.

If you watch the videos, you can see them upgrading some things. The upgrades I've seen all cost less than 200 coins, and that includes a higher-tier upgrade on a legendary unit. The smallest stack of Coins for a low-level Bounty is 20 coins; 50 seems average for PvP. And you get several stacks (for different mercs) every time you earn them.
So it looks like rares will be super easy to upgrade, while epics and legendaries are a bit (to a lot) harder because their specific coins will drop less often (even in purchased packs). Maxing out a legendary will be a big undertaking for anyone, whether you're paying or not.
Yeah I don't have to buy it, but they didn't have to sell it either.
If Blizzard wasn't going to sell it, why on earth would it develop the mode? Companies aren't charities: they create new products to earn a return on their investment.

For Rare and Epic Mercenaries: 33.3% chance to get each of the 3 Golden Portraits
When you obtain a Mercenary Portrait, the drop rate for the remaining Mercenary Portraits is dynamically recalculated, with new proportions based on your individual collection of Portraits for that Mercenary.
You will not obtain the same Mercenary Portrait until you own all the Mercenary Portraits for that Mercenary. Once you own all the Portraits for a Mercenary, you can obtain a second copy of a Mercenary Portrait, which will automatically be converted into Coins of that Mercenary: 50 coins for Rare, 75 coins for Epic, and 100 coins for Legendary Mercenaries.
Occasionally, you may obtain a Mercenary Portrait prior to obtaining its Mercenary Card. When that happens, you will be able to play that Mercenary with the Mercenary Portrait, and you could get the Mercenary Card from packs.

Tavern brawl, arena and most PVE content don't sell anything, how do you explain that ? They created free products and yet they still earn a return on their investment, crazy right ? Go figure that out before posting again about business and charities.
By selling mercenaries pre orders at full expansion price instead of making it a free PVE content with nothing to buy as they usually do, they are losing a ton of players, as you can tell by the outrage on these threads. If it was totally free, it would attract more players, who would then take a look at hearthstone packs and preorders and skins, etc.
They already sell expansion sets twice every 3 month, tons of skins, battlegrounds perks. Expansion sets are their main source of money, by far. They will make less money by selling mercenaries, cause the hearthstone whales are all quiting, cause hearthstone went from a game to a game platform.
The worst thing is you really thought you were smart telling me this BS about charities. I buy every hearthstone expansion by the way, I'm not some entitled F2P boy.
Edit : no need to reply, every argument has been made already in multiple threads, you won't change my mind and I won't change yours. But you are making hearthstone (the game, not the platform inside b.net platform) worse if you buy mercenaries pre orders, that's fact.
Anyone who spends money on battlegrounds / mercenaries is killing hearthstone.
i mean you can buy them, but get nothing in a way that your opponent will have an equally good team anyway, soooo... good job, you efficiently wasted your money. i'm sure the multi billion dollar company appreciates your efforts of trying, though
We don't. But Mercs is clearly diverting resources away from other formats we've already paid for which is a pity. That said, I'm interested to see what it's like!

You make some interesting points but: Tavern Brawls don't require much work as a full fledged expansion or new game, after all they use the the same assets as the base game; same could be said for Arena (although arena is indeed monetized even if not pay2win ofc) most of the new PvE modes are free but the old ones weren't, and the reception of what's funnier changed with that.
Saying they could have made Mercenaries free like other PvE stuff is a bit wild if you consider that is a totally new and different game mode for which they have to use new assets, art, coding basically everything. Also, it's not a new mode because it's completely disconnected from the base game if not for the gold aspect. So yeah saying they don't do charity might be bullshit but they are producing a totally free to play new game that you don't have to pay for, I don't know what you mean by "by making bundles instead of making it free to play" because they are making it free to play, but also giving the option to spend money if you want to, they aren't ruining anything by doing that, it's people like you that see a bundle and automatically assume you have to buy it.
Saying that you buy all expansions doesn't make you and entitled f2p but definitely and entitled whale
We need to reply because if you're entitlement made you do so we also have the right to express our opinion, if yours won't change maybe you should reconsider joining a conversation

I still think that Blizzard made a serious marketing error. Just like they did with the introduction of the reward track.
Their "Gameplay trailer" is overloaded with information and, at the same time, says nothing about what players will actually experience on day one. Even a useful warning "Hey, guys you will need gold so saving some is a good idea" sounded like - "Haha, we will take your Hearthstone gold away" and, evidently, a huge portion of the playerbase is now sure that this mode gives little to no gold but requires a hefty sum to even play.
Also, 3 preorders, that look like a way to attract players interested in a specific character look like "Hey, buy all this or you will be screwed and unable to play."

Dungeon run says hello. Free, no pre order, no shop item.
And yes, I am a whale, and I am seriously considering quiting HS over this BS, like I considered quitting over Battlegrounds perks, so, there's your great business move. I don't see what's left for me, it just feels like I'm funding 2 games that I don't wanna play when I buy Hearthstone expansions, cause my money doesn't go to Hearthstone dev anymore, it goes to battlegrounds and mercs. You can call me entitled, we all are in the end.
And no, you didn't need to reply. I didn't say you couldn't or shouldn't, I just said there is no need, because our opinion is well informed already, it's our values that are different. it's not a new mode because it's completely disconnected from the base game if not for the gold aspect
So it's completely disconnected from the base game except for the part that isn't disconnected from the base game. Great discussion really, loved it.
i don't understand why are people trying so hard to defend this obvious dick move from Blizzard. They didn't have to monetize this "new game that isn't a game mode" in the "new Hearthstone that isn't a game anymore but a platform". They just didn't, they made an arbitrary decision, and they will pay for it. And you will too I suppose.
Edit : I apologize if I've been rude, just ignore it

I fail to understand this logic. Why were you fine with "funding" WoW, Starcraft, Owerwatch and Diablo? Blizzard is one company, whatever you pay them may be used to develop whatever they want, if you think that all profits from a project X goes to develop the project X, then you have a rather strange view on how companies work.
How WoW that is launched from the same Battlenet client is different from Mercenaries launched from the same Hearthstone client?

So why isn'y Mercenaries directly in the B.net client if it's the same as WoW then ? You wanna know how it's different ? WoW isn't asking for my Hearthstone gold for progression and isn't pretending to be a new game mode inside a game.
I don't know how strange my view is to you, just know that it is correct and you'll full of shit until you provide evidence for your claim. Of course when you buy hearthstone packs the money goes to hearthstone development and marketing, not wow or diablo. They're completely different and separate departments within the company, as far as I know.
But if that answer isn't satisfying to you, please be informed that I do play Starcraft, Diablo and Overwatch, and used to play WoW, so I'm fine with funding these, even if it comes from hearthstone money (it doesn't).
But now the thing is "hearthstone development" means "mostly battlegrounds and mercs development" while they still extract the most money from non-BG/Mercs players. This is outrageous, plain and simple.
I dont think its very productive to argue with Petite Mouche, as you are coming off way to aggressive, you wont ever see others POV or opinions as valid or at least even consider what we are trying to talk about.
I dont think its very productive to argue with Petite Mouche, as you are coming off way to aggressive
That is correct, I apologize, but the main reason it isn't productive to argue with me is that I am 100% correct and I will prove you wrong every single time with my poor use of english langage, so yeah, kinda pointless if your goal is to change my opinion, instead of seeking the objective truth.
, you wont ever see others POV or opinions as valid or at least even consider what we are trying to talk about.
That is total bullshit, I could say the exact same thing about my POV and opinions
I don't see your opinion as valid because I believe it is invalid, simple as that, this has nothing to do with me being a bit aggressive and rude today.
So why isn'y Mercenaries directly in the B.net client if it's the same as WoW then ? You wanna know how it's different ? WoW isn't asking for my Hearthstone gold for progression and isn't pretending to be a new game mode inside a game.
Why? It is simple
1) It requires less new code and new art (they are reusing Hearthstone stuff) and it saves them a lot of money 2) It is a free advertisement in a huge hearthstone playerbase. Players will see this 3) It motivates Hearthstone players to stay in Hearthstone. Remember how and when Battlegrounds appeared? It was the time of the rise of autochess genre. Many, many Hearthstone players, including major streamers, switched to Team Tactics. Battegrounds returned most of them. Mercenaries mode fights for players that may leave for Slay the Sire, Darkest Dungeon or even freaking Raid Shadow Legends. 4) It attracts new (returning) players to Hearthstone. Some players who will come to play Mercenaries will start playing Hearthstone

Those are reasons, not to take your gold away,
Ok but why are you saying that to me ? I'm not the one saying WoW and mercenaries are the same thing, I'm the one saying they SHOULD be the same thing but blizzard is pretending they aren't to be more greedy.
and 4) There isn't a single darkest dungeon / RSL players in the world that will switch to mercs. Mark my words I'm dead serious, I've played both of them and Mercs DO NOT compete in any way, if that's the intended goal then they are in for the biggest disappointment in Blizzard's history. Because they are true games, great and beautiful games, not half game half game mode with shitty visuals. And RSL is much better than Blizzard with greed and inducing addiction. Never heard of Slay the Sire sorry.
Also 5) take hearthstone players' gold away, yes.
And finally 6) It pushes veteran players away, so much for attracting new ones with 4). Bad move, cause veteran players are the whales funding Hearthstone, new players generally are lowly F2P kids from elementary school.
Do we? I'd like to know what's the rough eestimation, because I've had that concern for a while and I somewhat consider that the main thing that will say if it's really wworth giving much time or not.
