There has been so much hate on Mercenaries and its baffling to be that the major complaint is about the bundles or the "pay2win" aspect. Like, for real, you know that you can play hearthstone without spending a single dollar (or by buying those welcome bundle ecc... For very cheap), like, both 3 game modes are free, you don't have to buy the Mercenaries bundles ro play it, heck they are even gonna give you free units to start with. If your main argument is FOMO than you are just weak and you can't complain about feeding your own addiction; if your main complaint is "it's pay2win" firstly, you don't knoe that, the mode isn't out yet, secondly, sometimes win doesn't equal fun and sometimes you wanna have fun, heck I even encountered some people who said that Battlegrounds is pay2win since you get 2 more choices... That's just delusional, unless you're a streamer why would you care, it's a fun mode anyway. As for Mercenaries, they said that they are gonna try to balance the PvP (which is also not thr main mode) around you, which means that even if it's pay2win you'll likely not go against someone who's stronger than you because he payed more; as for the main PvE part, what's the point in spending money to just steamroll your way through, where is the fun in that? At thay point is just winning but it's gonna quickly become boring.
Tl:dr, you don't need to spend money on the game(s) and if you do you're the only one you can blame
That's exactly what I intend to do. I do buy the cheapest bundle for the expansion and all the rest is F2P tbh, I very rarely play them. I'll see for Mercenaries.
Some free players will complain about literally ANYTHING that has a price tag attached, even if the purchase is totally optional -- hell, even if the price isn't even real money.
F2P players need to learn that servers cost money to maintain and developers don't work for free.
You can continue to play the new game mode without paying anything, but without these packs for sale, the server won't even be running for these f2p players to play.
Yep, anyone who does not like blizzards buggy trash corporate swill is a bad person. The defenders can't defend the terrible products anymore, so now they go ad hominem against the players who point out the truth....
Man they must of replaced the old community managers with some minimum wage mouth breathers, at least shadow could make an argument.
I am not paying for the packs, but I am not complaining about it either. It is there as an option for competitive players who want to gain an advantage against casual players.
You are free to pay for it to get a headstart, or just play casually for free. But without these players buying packs, you cannot play for free.
what's the point in spending money to just steamroll your way through
you don't knoe that, the mode isn't out yet,
Yes, the mode isn't out yet so you can't say what the impact of buying packs is. But you can extrapolate from the fact that they exist that there will be an incentive to buy them so they will have an impact. The question is how big. It can range from steamrolling to overcoming pay walls that you "technically" could beat as F2P by grinding.
As f2p players you do contribute to the game, servers and developers... you may not be contributing with money, but with time...
A f2p player donates his time, making the servers full with players... imagine no f2p players on hearthstone, there would be massive waiting times, or you would encounter the same player over and over again...

Just curious, I know we can obtain the preorder mercenaries for free as well, but does anyone know if they can be obtained for free in those specific "colors" (golden Sylvanas, Diamond Diablo/Lich King)? I assume the answer is no, similar to how the diamond cards from the tavern pass are uncraftable.
No, those cosmetics are money exclusive, but FortyDust mentioned in another thread that the bundles would supposedly come back around like the card backs.

No one said that. They just said be responsible and dont buy everything from the shop. If you dont like it dont play it. Simple as that. Stop interpreting things into others.
Oh and its PvE focused so all the "P2W" aspect is secondary. I for one dont care about PvP in mercs. If you want PvP experience enjoy Hearthstone (the card game) and then mercs dont even impact you. If you hate blizz that much make a statement and leave. But we all know people will just rage and change nothing.
I feel like it's crazy that people are so against it. And they've already said its not P2W... the single player part is a gradual increase in difficulty and you can choose the difficulty as well. As for the PVP side they have said you're always matching against someone with a similar power level, meaning whales that spend hundreds to level up on day 1 will go against other whales and the same with F2P players.
As for the monetization. Hearthstone has been out for 7 years and they have released Arena (very little monetization), tavern brawl (none), battlegrounds (very very little other than cosmetics), duels (same as arena) and the classic mode which for older players is free but not really for new players.
Meaning this is the 6th new mode thing they've done and it's the first to actually be monetized... I think for a greedy company, that's actually good going! 😂
If you don't like the new mode then don't play it but I have some friends who are still massively into the Pokemon games (and dont play hearthstone) and this has caught their eye and will be playing it. It's very similar. Build a team of 6 and level them up, they all have their own unique abilities, health, attack and speed, effectiveness against others and so on. I'll be trying out the mode for sure but I'm holding back any negative comments until I know for sure how it is
There is a general rule in business when you have a freemium service that 20% of the subscribers will be frequent payers, so they need to cover the whole community's costs (from the developers pov). They need to get some kind of advantage for that.

According to the site specification for Mercenaries packs, all Mercenaries will have golden portraits that you can find, as well as diamond portraits only for legendary Mercenaries, so you should be able to get them since it's nowhere mentioned that you won't be able to
the game mode isnt pay2win, its pay2progress. Representing the worst elements of gachi gameplay loops.
You cannot accelerate a mercenary's XP gain (leveling up) with cash. You can only upgrade Abilities and Equipment that way. There has to be some reason to buy packs, so I don't know what you expect.
We've already seen how many Mercenary Coins you get from low-level Bounties, and it's safe to assume those numbers increase at higher levels. We also know roughly how much it costs to upgrade things. It's not going to be that hard to upgrade your stuff without paying.
I hear the same about regular HS. ive been f2p for 4 years and im able to get around 100 packs per expansion allowing me to experience the game as if i was paying. cant play the meme decks that require fringe legendaries of course. still legend every month on either wild or standard, so its definelty not p2w
same will be with Mercs, i'll progress my way through without buying anything

So far I have never seen golden /diamond exclusive cards come back, including the golden ETC from beta.
Card backs have returned though so who knows.

I will assume you won't get platinum ones ´(wich I'm fine with considering platinum is just another plain aesthetic thing), but golden ones yes.
That would also explain why Sylvanas bundle is the cheapest one, since she only gets golden character instead of platinum.
