Hearthstone in general is free to play and I disagree with anyone who says its P2W. Mercenaries on the other hand is clearly P2W.
You can be a top ranked player on a F2P account.
You can be a top arena player on a F2P account. Its also true for duels if you are an old player with a big collection.
You can be a top battlegrounds player without spending any money since BG performance has nothing to do with money.
Mercenaries is another story. If you are a F2P player, you cant get anywhere near to the top of the leaderboard, because people who pay more will have a clear advantage over you. This is probably one of the reasons people hate it before its release.

Minor nitpick - BGs has the BG pass that vastly increases odds of a good hero. That's onetime, though, and ongoing BG costs are nil after that.

Its true, but you can reroll your daily and weekly quests into ones that you can complete in BGs, so you can get the gold for it even if you dont play other game modes.

Don't they matchmake heroes (teams) of similar strength together? I clearly remember this being said in that convoluted video.

At first, matchmaking will definitely try to seperate players who just completed the tutorial from players who have already preordered or bought a lot of mercs packs with gold or money. But there is also a rating system just like in BGs and there will be rewards if you progress further, kinda like in ranked mode. I highly doubt that on higher levels your party strength will be more important than your rating at matchmaking. I also highly doubt that you can get past a certain treshold if you never upgrade your party because the matchmaking will be fair. Just like in constructed, they try to find you an opponent with similar MMR, but you will never get to legend with a bad deck.

Direct quote from the stream "...you always will be paired up against opponents with teams of similar strength...", Hearthstone doesn't give a crap about what deck your opponent plays.
But yes, going for the competitive top-level will be impossible without some heavy investment of time and\or money. It isn't different from whatever majority of F2P games with a competitive element. Card games are rather unique because in card games you pay for variety.
What isn't true is: "if you are a F2P player, you cant get anywhere near to the top of the leaderboard, because people who pay more will have a clear advantage over you." No, you can grind top-tier mercs to max levels just like guys who pay. But you will pay with time instead of paying with money. Any F2P is that. It doesn't make it P2W. P2W is when - hey, this is premium equipment that can be bought only for $$#

In theory, you can grind out every hero to max level and max their abilities and equipment with just time investment. The question is: can you do that before the next set of mercenaries arrive? Just like normal HS its safe to assume that there will be a power creep with the new additions because thats what makes money for Blizzard.
If I want to maximize profit (and thats what they do), I would make it impossible to reach capped out mercs for F2P players before I release a new set of even more powerful mercs. There are pre-orders and there will be limited-time offers and we also have a very unforgiving crafting system. These all together point into a single direction: they want us to spend money if we want to be competitive in PVP. So in theory you can get everything, but the real question is, can you get them in time? I dont think so.

You are ignoring a hugely important piece of the puzzle: It is impossible to accelerate a mercenary's XP gain directly with cash purchases.
I will grant that upgrading Abilities and Equipment with purchased coins will make Bounties easier, thus indirectly reducing -- by a very small amount -- the time it takes to level up. But still, anyone who wants a level 30 Sylvanas is going to have to do a LOT of Bounties with Sylvanas. You cannot buy your way out of that step.
Also, you are making a lot of assumptions about ratings and the leaderboard. Normally, these systems grant you more rating points for beating an opponent who has a higher rating that you. That is a safe assumption. But is there also a multiplier based on the power level of your team? It's possible, but we don't know for sure. All we know at this point is that you will not lose matches because you were matched against an unfairly strong opponent. Anything else you have to say about the system is extremely premature at this time.
The real p2w aspect of Mercenaries is exactly like the p2w aspect of Hearthstone: Buying gives you a wider variety of Mercenaries to work with, so you have access to a wider variety of party builds. As with any PvP game, there will be a meta in Mercenaries PvP, and there is some value in being able to shift your strategy to compete in that meta. There's nothing wrong with that, and if you can accept it in Hearthstone, you should accept it in Mercenaries.

The only thing is that if you wish to approach mercenaries as a f2p, then you will have to abandon hearthstone itself. The grind rewards will not be enough to sustain both at a top level. Basically every bit of gold you spend mucking about in mercenaries cripples you in hearthstone. So unless you really want to quit hearthstone itself, a dedicated f2p should avoid mercenaries.

I watched 2 minutes of the mercenaries gameplay and no,thanks it's not for me. As for hearthstone in general i've been playing consistently almost every single day since early beta , last season was the first one i dont even bothered getting legend and it looks like it will continue that way...
Times changed folks, blizzard is no longer what we used to know and love.
I dont know if thats mentions but Mercs will have its own quests and gold earning ways. Look at it more as a new game than a mode. But this is the case for YEARS now. And blizz made even a completely free mode with BG. Now they bring out mercs and everyone loses their marbles? Jesus guys... dont play it. It does not impact you. This, a thousand times over. People are making assumptions and stating them as if they are fact. We know very little about the pvp mode thus far in Mercs, and for all we know the fears that are being stated now won’t be an issue at launch. Or maybe they will be! We just don’t know yet. I just wish the temperature could come down a little.
