Does anybody use a strategy for opening golden packs? I’ve got 85 regular Stormwind packs and 5 golden packs waiting to be opened. Can I use a pity tracker to monitor when a legendary is due, then open the golden packs and get a golden legendary?
Golden packs have a separate pity timer. In fact, every type of pack does, so no guaranteeing a legendary from any packs unless you get a LOT of them.
This. The only strategy for a new player is to buy packs of all expansion, one by one, until you get the legendary guaranteed in the first 10.
Then you can keep monitoring your packs to keep track of what you’re buying, but you’ll never know when you’ll open your next one (unless you’re extremely unlucky and open 39 packs of a single type without getting a legendary).
"Update: I was wrong, apologies. Golden packs are so rare, with no expectation to get enough of them to hit any pity timers, that we made them completely independent rolls, every time." - Chadd Nervig. Systems & Initial Game Designer on Hearthstone.

Take a walk on the wild side...
Just to clarify, Golden packs do not have pity timers, they run strictly on percent chances.
Source on the percent chances only?

Huh, thanks. I stand corrected!
Before opening the pack, you should move it 3 times in clockwise circles around the center, you'll guaranteed a legendary this way.
You know, 60% of the time, it works everytime!
I'm going to be honest with you, that smells like pure gasoline.
Also looks like OPs question was answered, I also didn't realize gold packs are always a % roll. Thanks!
I usually open golden packs first so that there is no chance to get 3 or more copies of same golden common or rare.
