I play mostly wild and have been trying to get into standard. Have been hating it so far. Doesn't feel the same at all. Anyone else have this issue? Seems more rock/paper/scissors than wild does and the outcome is heavily determined vs. what class or deck you queue against. I feel it is less so in wild. Seems like the goal of this mode is to keep everyone at 50ish% win rate?
Standard is very boring to me. It's a snooze fest for 20 turns, then someone runs out of cards to play, so the other person wins. Card generation is limited, so the same scenarios happen time and time again. I tried playing Evolve Shaman in standard last month, and it was fun for a while. Closest thing you'll get to a fun Standard experience in my opinion. Although I'm probably a little biased. I'm sure a lot of Standard players have the opposite problem with Wild. Explosive hands/decks that end the game by turn 5 or 6.
Having played to a pretty high level in both formats, I can safely say for myself that I find wild exponentially more fun and entertaining. Sure, standard might be more intense and the level of competition is generally higher, and I won't fault anyone if that's what they find fun. It's just not fun in a conventional sense like wild is, where the games are typically much faster, the power levels are much higher, and many people are actually trying to have a good time and aren't super sweaty all the time (with the exception of people who play res priest, those people are worse than anyone in standard 🤮). This, at least, has been my experience.

You must have played the mode where you only queue against priests. Many games in standard are over by turn 5 or 6. It's nearly the norm.

There are substantially fewer cards in standard than in wild, and so certain cards/strategies stand out as being head and shoulders above everything else. The meta revolves largely around 1) these cards/strategies and 2) the cards/strategies that most effectively counter #1. This has always been more or less the case in standard, at least compared to wild, but it's been exacerbated by the core set rotation and the relatively low power level of the Barrens expansion.

Yeah I liked standard at end of last year when it was DMF but now with only 4 sets it feels stale. Every game is the same crap. Wild feels like a lot more options and variety. The decks just feel weak right now no matter what I play as. Seems like outcome is determined by matchup. Priest beats hunter. Hunter beats warlock. Warlock beats priest. Mage beats priest. Hunter beats mage. Etc.
Haven't even got past bronze in standard for barrens because feels like pulling teeth to play that mode right now

Yeah it's over on turn 6 if rez priest cheats out a 5/5 blood of ghun and then a second big ass taunt and you're playing any board based deck :p rez priest loses to a lot but certain match ups it's straight cancer
Standard will gradually fade away because of the rock papers scissors mechanism the op described. Same in wild but it was never really popular.
look at all the streamers, only 10% at best are playing standard / wild. Everyone else plays bgs. I was pre ordering for every expansion but I haven’t touched standard in two months now so I won’t be buying this time as it’s not fun to play anymore - I’m sure I’m not the only one. What’s the point of buying packs if the game ultimately decides who wins and loses based on the Rock Paper Scissors matchmaking?
I kinda went the opposite way - I played Standard for a long time, and now have started moving towards wild after having the dust for some of the legendaries I need. And I've got to say, I prefer wild a lot more. I've hit legend in wild the last 2 seasons, but not standard. Before then I would typically hit legend in standard most months, or rank 5 diamond at a minimum.
Standard now feels like it has so little variety. And when you come across a class, most of the time you know almost exactly what's in their deck. Deathrattle Demon Hunter. Face Hunter. Aggro Shaman. Menagerie Priest. And more recently, Control Warrior. 5 out of 6 games would fall against those opponents.
Yet in wild, there is a lot more diversity. I'll come up against a druid. It is an aggro druid? Is it a jade druid? Is it a togwaggle druid? Is it a celestial druid? Is it a malygos druid? I have no idea until at the very least they play their first card.
Wild does have some matches where an aggro opponent can have a near-perfect opening hand and run you over by turn 3, but that's part of the fun with those all or nothing decks. And I'd rather that than a drawn-out game against a priest any day.
I'm the opposite. I'm trying to understand how to enjoy wild because since I got to high mmr (top 200-500 legend) all I queue into are secret mages, reno priests, darkglare warlocks and random aggro decks, all with insane draws.
The only deck that works for me is secret mage but when I try to play something different like big shaman, spell mage or discard warlock I don't stand a chance.
Sometimes I feel people in standard are more chill, they don't play lackey faire game turn 1 or n'zoth's mate into double 2/2 and patches.
I simply enjoy standard more at the moment because it's fun to highroll with decks like miracle rogue or spell mage and that I don't feel destroyed when I don't do that
Standard has very limited pool of cards for much innovation. Rather bland now with just one or two dominating archetypes and boring if we que into the same deck every other or alternate game. This is a structural issue on every new year rotation with 1 out of 3 expansion sets.
Hope that the new expansion will breath life and fun back into meta or bliz makes some changes on rewards track to make it interesting/worthwhile to grind on standard ladder. Nothing much to look forward to post level 100 so excitement also dries up towards the end of month.
