So I noticed a new trend in Hearthstone. It started sometime last year. I noticed players started to highlight the enemy hero portrait, in game, as an attempt to BM? or intimidate, or show off when winning or ahead.
A player will make a strong play, get an advantage, and purposely put their cursor over the enemy hero to light it up. Showing off sort of.
I believe its an attempt to show aggression, pressure, im winning your losing , etc.....and I find the psychology behind it fascinating.
Has anyone else noticed this? Do you do it too? And why?
Its very obvious when it happens and I have asked people I played against why they do it. Most pretend they dont know they are doing it when callled out on it.
This topic is meant to be fun and lightearted, and I am genuinely curious about this phenomenon.
I almost always Squelch my opponent during out games, and I find higglighting the hero as the only means to BM ing someone.
It's not new. It's more an attempt to tilt the opponent then anything. Hovering cards, targeting spells to face and roping lethal trying to get someone to concede. It's all in the same boat.
Well, just speaking for myself, if my portrait lights up because my cursor is resting on the portrait, it's probably accidental. I had no idea that actually causes my portrait to light up. I usually leave my cursor there because it's close to the cards in my hand. I typically don't run my cursor over my cards, since I'm trying not to tip my hand about what I might play during my next turn.
Are you sure they're pretending not to know what they're doing? I sure as hell didn't. I think you're being a bit paranoid.
I've either never noticed this particular phenomenon or it's never happened to me. This could be intentional, or it could just be your imagination. But BM in general is nothing new.
Some people are really just full of themselves, I think. Leave it to the veil of anonymity to bring out the worst behaviour in people, right? If you were playing a card game face to face, I doubt most people would try to be irritating on purpose. Though, some probably still would.
I had a game against a lunacy mage the other day where it was a complete blowout. He drew all the best cards in perfect order. Just as he planned, of course? But then insisted it was "well played". And when I didn't respond with well played, he began spamming it.
Whatever makes you feel good, I guess? But this kind of behaviour just makes me feel bad for them. It's still just a game.

no they highlight your hero in game when ahead as a way to BM you or show off. NOt paranoid, been observing this for over 6 mponths now, I have asked multiple people about it and wanted to ask others about it. Just curious as to the motives.
I feel bad both for the people who are so desperate for attention that they do this, and for the people who are so thin-skinned that it actually bothers them.

Never noticed this, it could happen for a variety of reasons, like in 7 years i've never cared where my cursor is, so it might have been hovering the enemy hero a few times, or I just left the cursor on the enemy after squelching him without paying attention, and.... The enemy took this personally and thought I was BMing ? lol.
i don't mean to be rude but this is the most paranoid thing I've ever read on this forum. Rigged matchmaking is nothing compared to this thread.

i don't think they pretend. They legit have no idea what you're talking about. Do you really feel attacked when there is a red lighting around your hero portrait ?
I've never really noticed something like that and came to that conclusion. I play a lot of aggressive decks, so normally when somebody's hovering me, I just assume they're squelching me. I've played a lot of people who emote spam me when I play aggro and they win with control or something, so I guess people assume that when I do well I'll emote spam? I'm not sure.
Myself, if I'm hovering around, I'm figuring out lines in my head and mimicking the plays I'd make with my mouse. Like "if I send this and this face I'll have X damage in hand, they're at Z Health, blah blah blah" and stuff like that. I never considered bming though hovering, though.
I never noticed it, but I guess I also don't care for it. xD
What I do care for though, is the fact that I like to run odd cards that don't see a lot of play, so sometimes when I play one of those cards I can see the opponent hovering over it, reading what it does, and I think that's funny.

If background mode is enabled (desktop client) you will highlight any cards or portraits even after switching to another window. So your opponent could just scrolling memes.
Also after mulligan the Ok button is placed right over the portrait
The entire game is designed to frustrate each player as much as possible, this way they make you want to play more, to win more, to show “who’s boss”.
The highlighted portrait, the hovering over cards, the “well played, “coward”, “I am...impressed” messages, they are all part of the game design to piss you off and make you more obsessed to win. BM is part of the game no matter if people like it or not.
This happens to me so often. I sometimes wonder if it’s a way of getting the game to glitch and help you win or something. I’ve even had opponents do nothing during a game and just keep my hero highlighted until time is about to run out (super annoying) Almost every time I play now someone is highlighting my hero, so happy I came across this topic…now I know I’m not alone with experiencing this.

That's called paranoia i think

Sorry, misread your post. Very odd.

Never noticed such a thing, except at the beginning of the match to squelch me. :P

Fuhgeddaboudit
LOL thats pretty funny!
I know exactly what you are talking about.
Though I dont think it's a problem, it's pretty rare and I rly dont care about it.
In some way it is like touching your hero.
Btw noone does this by accident, or lets say it's obvious when intentional.
I'm asking honestly here.... who gets upset by something like this, truly? I mean... my god.
There are a lot of douchebags in this game (or any other game for that matter) who BM in many ways in an attempt to make others feel bad.
Just be the better person and don't let them bother you too much, because it is obvious they get an enjoyment out of BMing but are actual losers IRL.

IMO it is
A) Accidental
B) Bots centering their cursors
