I theory crafted a shadow reaper anduin deck before KotFT came out and it was my favorite highlander deck. I also liked kingsbane mill rogue in KnC before they nerfed cold light Oracle. Either way, My favorite metas were KotFT, KnC and WotOG.
Personally I enjoyed GvG the most. I felt like it was when the game really started to open up and things felt a lot more balanced. The GvG midrange paladin is probably my favourite deck of all time. I didn't play for half of 2017 and most of 2018 (was travelling a lot and didn't have the time to dedicate to the game) so I missed those expansions.
If I had to pick my worst it would definitely be classic or outland. Having went back and played classic a few weeks ago - it just shows how broken and unbalanced the game was back then. Priest, Paladin and Shaman none existent in the meta and just an all round bad experience. I really hope they reintroduce naxx and gvg to classic. I think they will eventually as no one plays it anymore.
Yes, the balance between the classes in Classic is pretty terrible. Priest is especially deep in the dumpster, even though some dedicated players are able to do well with it.
The balance between cards is also puzzling. 4 mana Leeroy Jenkins, old Innervate, 0 mana Soulfire and 3 mana Big Game Hunter are absolutely busted, and some of them see play in strong wild decks today, nerfed! On the other hand, the defensive cards, the minion curve, maximum value and deck synergies are absolutely laughable. It makes for a weird experience, but there is skill involved in most matchups, notably playing around and setting up burst.

Yeah classic was awful mate - it was just such an unbalanced experience. I agree with the skill aspect, it was definitely a lot easier to calculate the exact amount of damage that any given class could put out. But on the flip side you were very reliant on drawing the specific cards you needed to win whereas in the modern era its not as important. I think that's probably down to the discover mechanic and ability to acquire cards from different classes.
It was fun for a couple of days to go back and play handlock and miracle rogue but even those decks still didn't feel so great to play until naxx and gvg hit. They would be fools not re release naxx and gvg as they were when the game finally started to take shape (apart from undertaker - hated that card, so hopefully its in its nerfed state). GvG was my personal favourite but I'm starting to think now, was it because I genuinely liked the cards or was it because its when I actually started to get good at the game.
Like many people my favorite meta was Whispers of the old gods.
It had everything. Balance, fun, diversity, game plans, skill.
Combo decks were slow and required actual set up, control decks had strong finishers but a finite number of resources, aggro didn't draw their entire deck by turn 6, and midrange existed.
I liked Un'Goro (Caverns Below notwithstanding). Felt like you could play a reasonable minion-based deck and have success without cheating out a bajillion mana. "Adapt" was a fun keyword; "discover" was relatively balanced back then and actually cost you something to play. "Infinite value" wasn't really a thing, so there was a genuine science to building a deck in terms of value vs early game.
I loved Dragon Priest (yeah, I'm a simpleton) and handlock. And I'm probably alone here, but I really didn't find pirate warrior nearly as toxic as most problematic decks.
Overall, felt like every class (other than Shaman) had a viable archetype.
Probably unpopular opinion, but mine was Saviors of Uldum. There were tons of great cards around, mainly the new LoE Legendaries and quests. Doom in the Tomb was the best mid-expansion event as well btw.
It has been said a dozen times now, but yeah, Un'Goro. The quests, discover, adapt, these were super fun mechanics. The former was something to build your deck around with the consistent draw, and the latter two really highlighted the strength of have a non physical card game. Just try to imagine translating a card like Primordial Glyph to mtg! And as for the decks, elemental shaman, quest mage, miracle priest, big druid... quest rogue... and others! They were diverse, and fun!
On a lesser note, I also have good memories from Gnomes vs Goblins. Tempo priest with Velen's Chosen and Mech mage were standout favorites of mine!

The 2 werks after old gods came out was the most exciting time for hearthstone imho.
It was just a deckbuilder's paradice.
