Been playing a bit of classic, and wow, I totally forgot how good he is and how many decks he is playable in. I mostly play wild where he is too slow, does he see play in standard anymore? I remember back in the day he was 1 of the core legendaries to craft with Leeroy and Sylvanas.
I think my main issue with thalnos is he’s been power crept out of legendary status.
Ive always compared him to loot hoarder, and when that’s done he looks even worse. You have a legendary, which is limit 1 per deck of course, that’s only upside on a common is +1 spell damage. What’s crazier is it actually is worse in some instances, having 1 less attack. I get that spell Dam is better than the attack, but again were comparing a legendary to a common.
I'm definitely going to check him out in a Self mill warlock deck. comboing with with AoE like Soul Rend and School Spirits might be really good for additional cycling and burn. Plus the 1 extra damage often is the difference between clearing a board and not
I do agree hes been powercrept out of relevance. a fundament problem with the classic set. he should probably be 1 mana but that might make it too good like Azure Drake was

The thing is, when playing Thalnos you have the flexibility to choose wether you want the card draw or the spell damage more. I don't think there's any other card that can heal you almost full when used in combination with Spirit Lash AND still draws you a card afterwards for only 2 mana.

Yeah, he is pretty powerful in the right decks. He is fantastic in old school miracle rogue but I dont think he makes any modern lists because of cards like swindle and secret passage, but at least in wild miracle is too slow anyways.
The most common deck I see him in now is Reno priest for removal spells and they just need as much card draw as possible.
He's still a decent card, not worth dusting and certainly playable in a variety of decks, but it's been years since he was worth crafting, and he is one of the most easily replaced cards in a deck.
Mage players in particular shouldn't even bother with Thalnos anymore, now that they have both incredible card draw and incredible spell damage minions.
He's just an overall solid card. I wouldn't say he's been power-crept out, just that the meta is so removal heavy. The reason he kinda works in classic, is that he has a chance to stick around and/or throw off your opponent's curve to remove him.
The duality of hearthstone players; should I skip crafting Bloodmage Thalnos and play 2 Loot Hoarders and two Azure Drakes (Rest his kind soul, the dragon of all dragons, 2014-2017) instead?
This has been thoroughly discussed in the past, but all would eventually conclude that Thalnos is a much stronger card. It is not worthy of the legendary status, but being able to run two copies of it would prove too powerful, so it is a legendary. The convenience of having 2-in-1 pressures you into choosing your cards more wisely and think of empty deck slots as more valuable real estate than the cards themselves.
In the year 2021, however, he's only ever useful in Raza Priest, that's it. It was getting too expensive to craft a card such as Thalnos for 1600 precious dust, but he will be missed nonetheless. D*mon hunter is not a real class; therefore, any opinions and experiences of those who main DH are rendered worthless and should immediately be discarded.

Legendary status did not really infer power back in the day, just how many copies you can use. That is why basics like the Yeti and Nightblade were playable in the game. 4/5 was basically pure stats for 4 mana, only class cards could get a bit stronger. Now you have cards that blow the Yeti out of the water for same mana cost and statline. The power creep is real and I miss the old times when card budget was a rule not a suggestion.

Spell damage used to be a lot stronger. In classic you don't have too much hard removal or reactive plays in general, so getting Thalnos for your Swipe or fan of knives is crucial. Today you've got tons of rush minions and cards like hysteria which make Thalnos redundant. Now that I'm thinking about it I don't remember seeing any spell damage minions in any deck other than SD mage for a while
Spell damage for 2 mana that cycles itself is pretty strong in decks that have some reliance on damaging spells. The versatility Thalnos offers in either boosting a key spell and/or thinning your deck with cycle is great and compares very favouribly with Loot Hoarder. Deathrattle synergy can also be a plus point in certain decks.
Thalnos is the 28th-30th best card in a number of decks which does mean he is never really critical but a good card to have available as there will always be a few decks that would be better with him in it.

In standard he's only used in OTK DH and sometimes in Spell Damage Mage (through discover).

I love you Dreadsteed, I will never disenchant you!
