The thing for me is, that if I wanted to play wild, I can build 1 deck and play it until I like it. If I want to play standard, the same. And you can build competitive deck for 1200 (spell damage mage) 2k (token druid) or 10k dust.
For duels, I need to have collection of what, 6-7 classes to be guaranteed I can actually build competitive deck? And it rotates every 4 months? And I have to go through conditions (have some cards to get treasure/hero power). It just doesnt make sense for me.
If you enjoy it and you have collection/dust, just play it. Nobody will blame you.
For me to play duels, they would have to make it "fair" - either:
Make it like arena (so I have a chance without wild cards)
Make standard version (so I dont need wild cards)
Make the current rotation accessible (i.e. you pay 150 gold and you get to chose from all cards for the format).
But the current system just doesnt work for me and until it is changed, I will not play it, because I feel the mode is "unfair".
OMG.....GET THE MEMO PLEASE. You barely need any wild cards at all to make your starter deck in Duels. Look at these starter decks:
There are only a few wild cards in any of these and they're almost all commons. One or two rares. No epics. No legendaries. And only one copy of each. You can't craft ONE Haunted Creeper so you can try Deathrattle Hunter in Duels? That's "unfair"?
Yeah it’s really strange having both a collection requirement and a payment requirement (Tavern Pass).
As for the game mode itself, netdecking + extra RNG just doesn’t appeal to me. If decks were build from random card pools I would probably play it from time to time, but having to understand and learn another meta is too much work for the reward of more overpowered randomness.

What payment requirement? There is no payment requirement. Casual is free. "Heroic" costs gold and has similar rewards to arena. I've played a ton of Duels and not played Heroic once.
I think the prebuild part will always be a sore point, players without old collections will feel outmatched and probably avoid the mode. I mean we have here Standard only players noping out in this very thread. I wonder how disadvantaged a Standard only player is % wise if that is even calculable. And ofc even big Standard collections are not a rule among most F2Ps. They should have made your whole deck built from card buckets or pre-built by Blizzard, or at least from the same pool available to all. Then you would see a lot more players.
We need more modes that allow using old cards not less. There is a price to be paid for the habit of DEing all rotating cards. If you want to play only standard then not complain that you can't play anything but standard.
Netdecking a Standard ‘starter deck’ and playing casual doesn’t sound appealing to me though. If I was to play Duels I would want a large collection of cards to play with as creating decks is what I enjoy the most. Also ‘casual’ has just never interested me for any game, I need some kind of progression or feeling of being rewarded.
We’re just probably different kinds of players. Duels seems a weird mix of Spike netdecking and Timmy RNG.

If netdecking + extra RNG isn't for you, why do you even play Hearthstone? That's like 99% of all non-Arena games.
It would be great if Blizzard finally realized that the requirements for unlocking treasures and even more so hero powers are just too much for many players to enjoy the mode.
And while I like that treasures and passives that can be a pretty big power spike, there is still a lot of balancing to do on that end. And by that I mean nerfing stuff to get the power level closer to actual cards, so that games aren't decided solely by who draws their treasure(s) first.

It probably isn’t anymore tbh, I came back after a 3 year break and play home-brew memedecks mainly. I’m (naively) hoping that some restraint is used post rotation and a dip in power level and decrease in RNG is seen. If not I’ll probably pop back in a few more years and see how it is then.

The thing is, that I dont care about decks, I care about the principles here. I will not play format, which doesnt allow me to play class I want to play, which forces me to use dust on cards I will not use in other modes. Is it playable with standard cards? I am sure it is. Am I willing to play with disadvantage? Nope.
While I like the idea of the duels, I just hate how they did it, so I played 2 casual duels, when it started and that was it. Same thing about the classic - no reason to even try it.
I think some of the changes to the treasures/new treasures have added a lot of depth. However, more balance is needed i feel and the rewards are still a little lackluster.
would be cool if they had a special skin you could unlock for going 12 wins in a season or a coin. That’s maybe a lot to ask. But I’d probably never stop playing if they made rewards interesting across the different modes

I dont see many complains, OP started the topic and people are replying, why they are not playing it. If you are F2P/budget player, who started recently, you have to dust all rotating cards to be able to play something else than aggro.
As I mentioned, for me it is just a system, that doesnt work for me - to unlock all hero powers/treasures, you are (were?) required to have some ammount of cards from newest expansion. So I had to have basic hero power and basic treasure. After it I found out, that I would have to use cards from wild, which will be rotating in 4 months in duels. And I would have to do it for what, 7 classes?
So yeah, there is not really hatred towards it, just indifference, similarly to wild. It is system, that favours paying customers, which is OK for me. I will just not participate in it. If Blizzard wants this kind of game mode and there will be enough people to play it, why not. I think it will be (similarly to classic) just fringe mode, which will be played by few.
To really enjoy battlegrounds you have to pay for perks every expansion. With Duels you can opt out of the paid arena so if they made it like a dungeon run where you don't even rely on your collection then they're just giving us completely free stuff. Blizzard isn't a charity organization. Making it use the collection we already have and not paywalling it in any added way is actually quite generous of Blizzard. They basically just handed us a completely different way to play Hearthstone for free! If you already have a ton of cards (like me) then you've already payed into it. If you don't then crafting a few old cards (for starting deck) and buying some packs in the new expansion (for hero powers) is the price you pay for access to the mode. It's a very small price considering you get to use those cards in constructed.
I take issue with people who avoid Duels on principle. You're not entitled to free stuff. If you really just want to play one or two decks F2P in one class that's fine. You haven't payed to build a collection so Duels requires a bit more investment from you. Doesn't mean it's not worth it! You can play just one deck and one class in Duels too! You can do the exact same F2P thing you do in constructed in Duels! It will require a bit of crafting just like F2P constructed.
And keep in mind: if you only want to play one or two classes/ one or two decks in Duels you totally can! If your class doesn't come up in the initial choice of four just throw random cards in a deck and then immediately retire it once the match starts. Do that once or twice until your hero comes up.
When I was a new player, I loved Arena because I could draft and play cards I wasn't able to play in Standard. Duels could have been a great way to get gold from new players if they had just made all cards available in the ranked mode. Especially at the start of an expansion, people would buy tickets to make their theorycraft decks that they can't make in standard. And playing those cards in Duels would make people want to get those cards in standard.
I'm kind of surprised how put off people seem to be by the crafting costs of duels decks. Given that they only need like 12 cards, with a lot of consistent staples between classes, I've generally found it to be one of the cheapest possible formats.

To do what you're suggesting Duels would have to remove casual mode. Having to buy a ticket for access would kill it. It's way too highrolly and RNG dependant for people to be willing to play it if that's the only way. Once you've gotten the hang of it in Casual sure, give Heroic a try.
Having said that, getting to just two or three wins will get you your money back, but only if you actually wanted to buy a pack. InHeroic Duels or Arena you'll always get that 100 gold value. Two or three wins gets you about the remaining 50 gold value from what you payed.
I have every card relevant to duels and I still hardly ever play. I got my 12-0 with a few different classes and then just fizzled out. Even if they gave everyone the cards available for duels for free I still think it would be at the bottom.
It’s just not that fun. And Heroic duel rewards are lackluster like others said. I’d rather spend gold on Arena.
Maybe if the XP rewards were equivalent to other modes I’d spend more time on it, but since it gives less rewards than ranked I don’t much see the point. Especially when there are so few players, at higher wins you can q into the same individual 2-3 times
