Wish the "Duels is dead" people here would chill. It doesn't have to have as much traffic as constructed or battlegrounds to still have a lot of people playing it. Frickin millions of people are playing Hearthstone.
Duels is a great idea. It still needs more balancing (Deathrattle Hunter *cough) but a PVP dungeon run is a really fun mix of single player and competitive elements. Sure it feels bad when you inevitably run into someone with insane treasure combos etc., but the flip side of that is how fun it is to pull that stuff off yourself. That's completely worth the feel bad matches.
The problem is just that Duels came out at the wrong time. It got a ton of hate because it came out when reddit was revolting against Blizzard. Its (limited) reliance on your collection (which they've reduced) was enough for people to group it in with all the other Great Evils. Basically some people just hate Blizzard for sucking so much money out of their wallets and want to see them fail. Duels is a fantastic concept that we should all be supporting and at the very least buoying with occasional play.
I mean....haven't we all at some point thought "How cool would it be if they combined dungeon runs with competitive play? That would be so sweet!" Turns out it is so sweet, and can get a lot sweeter. A little more love and a little less hate would help that along.
Literally my next "what if" after Duels was "what if they made a rogue-like RPG version of Hearthstone where you can level up your party and progress through a map?" And now they're doing exactly that! Team 5 is doing amazing stuff and giving us so many cool ways to enjoy Hearthstone. I know Blizzard is really gouging with their prices but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. This is why we can't have nice things! Try to enjoy and appreciate all these nice things we have so we can keep them. On that note if you have actually written off Duels (perhaps because you got fed up with getting owned by crazy decks before getting to experience having the sweet deck yourself) I recommend trying it out again. It is a really cool different way to experience Hearthstone.
If there was a standard and wild version of duels, it’d be fine. I only play standard, and although duels is still playable with standard cards, it’s not much fun playing against players using wild cards, and the mode isn’t enjoyable enough for me to spend dust crafting wild cards. It’s essentially another mode of game play for wild players, and that’s fine, there’s enough in hearthstone to go around. So personally I stick with standard ranked, arena, and battlegrounds (even though I don’t have bg perks, even so, I might sign up for those in the future, I enjoy bg enough it’d probably be worth it to me). Just my .02.
Last duel game I played my shaman opponent played two 7/7 on turn 1.
I'm never going back.
Exactly what I'm talking about. You're cheating yourself out of a lot of fun man. That stuff will happen in Duels. You gotta take it in stride. It's the price you pay for being able to do cool stuff. Give it another shot and try not to take it so seriously. Enjoy the ride!

If you look at suggested starting decks for Duels on this site or Outofcards you'll see that there are very few wild cards in any of them, and no wild legendaries IIRC. You don't need wild cards to play Duels.

I think I know better than you what's fun for me, I tried duels many times, I actually thought I would have a lot of fun because I love doing this stuff in PVE, but I assure you i'm not missing out, I have plenty of fun in ranked play standard and wild with homebrew decks, doing cool stuff all day long with cards you wouldn't even imagine in actually balanced game modes (aside from quest rogue this thing is duels level of bullshit).
Everything that happens on duels happens in ranked play. It just doesn't happen on turn 1 with no ability to recover. And games aren't decided by which passives you picked and who draws his treasure first.
I'm totally fine with you enjoying duels, please allow me to enjoy something else, to each their own. I would rather face 100 secret mages in a row than doing another Duels run.
I really really want to love duels, but I generally found myself extremely disappointed with the quality of its balance updates. It usually felt like they would make mostly small nerfs to cards that were barely played, but would leave things like discard warlock and double time almost untouched, resulting in runs almost always ending with being blown out by the same couple top strategies. That combined with them just not being as frequent or thorough as I would've hoped for with a brand new format has me unsure about jumping in.
That said, since then, it seems like a lot of these problems have been improved. I just haven't gone back to check it back out since then.
I was probably the most excited person for duels, but that quickly faded and duels has turned into a mismanaged mess.
The mode isn't getting the attention it needs and the attention it is getting is being given to the wrong areas. Duels should have monthly set rotation similar to arena, but what we're getting is a "rotation" at new expansion release, and by "rotation" I mean adding new sets instead of removing them. The current sets enable some of the broken crap we constantly see, and people see this and have no way to combat it. The same broken crap that was in there since launch 3 months ago, will be in there for 3 more months now.
There's also the fact that every year you're late to playing hearthstone, you're extremely behind in duels. Stuff like Naxx, Karazhan, and BRM are easy enough to get due to the fact that it being a 1 time fee of 20-25 bucks for all the cards, but now they're starting to dump sets like Un'goro in there which was a full expansion. The dust economy for wild cards is completely unreasonable for people to be expected to craft cards from rotated sets just for duels.
I still play duels. I get a little upset when I face a deck that clearly just built for one build and then just kept restarting until they got the reward they were building around.
I don't know how to fix that though. Some people are just going to game the system. But, I'd like some sort of iron man mode where you had to play to the end with the choices you were given.
Oh, and I could do without the reward that gives all your other minions +1 attack when one dies. That is too crazy. And the build arounds are just ugly.
There, that is my fix for duels. Just remove that reward. Or change it to a random friendly minion gets +1+1 instead. It just has too much burst potential as it is. Especially with folks just building decks to eventually get that reward.
My fix for duels is random passives and treasures, maybe even random card buckets. I mean 1 automatic random one, instead of picking 1 from 3 random choices. You would only get to pick one thing in this game mode it's your first 10 cards.
That would fix just about everything I hate about duels.
I LOVE Duels. I love the feeling of building and playing busted decks. I also find it way more consistent than Arena in terms of getting 7+ wins, so it's a great gold spinner for me.
I think the prebuild part will always be a sore point, players without old collections will feel outmatched and probably avoid the mode. I mean we have here Standard only players noping out in this very thread. I wonder how disadvantaged a Standard only player is % wise if that is even calculable. And ofc even big Standard collections are not a rule among most F2Ps. They should have made your whole deck built from card buckets or pre-built by Blizzard, or at least from the same pool available to all. Then you would see a lot more players.
The thing for me is, that if I wanted to play wild, I can build 1 deck and play it until I like it. If I want to play standard, the same. And you can build competitive deck for 1200 (spell damage mage) 2k (token druid) or 10k dust.
For duels, I need to have collection of what, 6-7 classes to be guaranteed I can actually build competitive deck? And it rotates every 4 months? And I have to go through conditions (have some cards to get treasure/hero power). It just doesnt make sense for me.
If you enjoy it and you have collection/dust, just play it. Nobody will blame you.
For me to play duels, they would have to make it "fair" - either:
Make it like arena (so I have a chance without wild cards)
Make standard version (so I dont need wild cards)
Make the current rotation accessible (i.e. you pay 150 gold and you get to chose from all cards for the format).
But the current system just doesnt work for me and until it is changed, I will not play it, because I feel the mode is "unfair".
Yeah I liked it a lot, then realized people also netdeck for it aaaand the end.
Best card in HS? Mastercard.
Its simple. I just play one class. I have no interest to pay Gold and play a class i dont like or dont have cards for.
This mode is fun, maybe. But it is also pay to win.

Well you got your answer.

Duels is my favorite Hearthstone game mode. You're not alone.
Don't mind the Pepegas, they are just circlejerking. Play whatever class/deck/mode you like!!!

Duels is even more RNG netdecky than ranked.
It's all about what RNG OP powers you get or don't get. Basically you're dead already if you don't get lucky, that's shitty.
Then it's all about broken classes with abilities, mage, DH, hunter is heavily favored, and then u got whoever draws an OP treasure first.
it's kind of disgusting if u play duels too much,.
between the RNG and the p2w it is everything terrible about fremium games.

I love to play duels. Every now and then, when im burned out of boring ladders i do some relaxed duels.
I just wish they could remove the retarded dust reward...
