It seems this expansion had a very deep dip in the quality of the cards artworks. One of the most important aspects (imo) of any ccg for me is the art and this expa it is abysmal. The legendaries are almost all closeups of a "averagely" drawn characters in very boring poses and a blurry background.
Barrens is such a rich area with cool views and it sucks they are not taking advantage of that. It feels as if blizzard being the small indie company they are saved some bucks by butchering the art.
What do you think? Am i being a bit too harsh? Or spot on?
I agree with OP and am surprised the first two responses said otherwise. Yes Mordresh is cool, and I also like the Murloc legendary and the Warlock legendary thus far, but as a whole everything seems to lack detail, be of a weird color palette and be sort of childish(?) I'm having trouble finding the words. I actually though about making this post myself that the art is pretty lame this time around. Maybe since they had to commission a lot of Core Set cards as well that the budget was trimmed down a little. But I agree, spot on,
I agree with you completely. It’s been plain and uninspired, I don’t get how anyone can claim otherwise. Barak Kodobane and Tavish Stormpike straight up look like commons.

you should never be surprised at pro blizzard responses on this board, no matter what blizzard does it is perfect to some of these........
Honestly I agree, but I have felt this way in the past, but typically I get used to the art once the set comes out. Often like the art way more once I play with the cards.
You can definitely tell they went more basic with the artwork... which I am just fine with. Lately it has been getting way too cartoony for my liking. I dont think it's a coincidence that the more simple card design has to do with hs basically going back in time to the days of vanilla wow witg this xpac. I like it
I guess it's in line with the theme, the Barrens is a low level area composed mostly by flat fields and the Crossroads, so it makes sense to keep things simple.

I love you Dreadsteed, I will never disenchant you!
The art style is on purpose, barrens is a lower level area reflects more basic characters and spells and not overly mean looking monsters, softer colors and trading more detail for boldness. The mercenaries so far look superr clean. I don’t know how anyone can’t appreciate this expansion’s card art so far.
Totally agreed. The artwork of this expansion is too cartoonish and childish in a way that is different from previous ones. And the new cards so far, in general, lack details and some of its color is sort of garish
It feels a lot like World of Warcraft to me, which I like a lot. I assume this was their goal, and I think they've succeeded. Thematically it fits very well
I had similar thoughts, until I actualy looked through all the revealed cards, and there are only 3 which do not meet my 'requirements' (Rokara, Vengeful Spirit and Barak Kodobane), and made a whole set look worse, while it turns out all the other artwork look pretty well to me.

looks no different than usual, the difference is this expac seems more minion heavy, or they are revealing minion heavy.
Minion cards have always been character center focus, minimal depth of field
Mordresh Fire Eye
I rest my case

I agree that the art this expansion has been offputtingly simple, but they all have a consistent style so it seems intentional.
I think the art work is amazing so far with some exceptions ofc but that's just me, you cant please everybody...
It's really not that bad.. just a cute talking point going around lately

bro stop writing your own comments
The new artwork is actually the better than any expansion so far

I thought about this too and completely agree with op. I'm glad that I didn't buy a bundle after seeing those very stupid looking cards.
The new Vol’jin raised an alarm for me. I haven’t taken a second to gaze at any artwork since... forever.
Take a walk on the wild side...

I could be wrong, but I get the impression that HS has been moving in a cartoonish direction for a while. Could be to appeal to a specific market?
