First of all, I want to say that I appreciate the free single player content the devs are putting out.
However I hate the fact that I have to grind through two hours of boring and repetitive missions just to get a single pack. I like the lore aspect of it, but does anybody even enjoy the "challenges" themselves. I wouldn’t even really call them challenges, especially this time around. The fights in the rogue book of heroes are literally scripted. For example, Cho'gall always has Twisting Netheron turn 8 and C'Thun on turn 11. There is so little skill involved, and I feel like this has worsened as more book of heroes chapters came out.
With the new Forged in the Barrens expansions, it seems like Blizzard want to "continue" the book of heroes in a different way. I was wondering what you guys think about this. To me it seems like their just poor quality adventures to sell hero skins and packs.
This is the worst Book of Heroes to date. In the last few missions, about a third of your deck is filled with cards that just do nothing for you. I shouldn't be having to pass multiple turns in a row to draw something I can use, it's unacceptable. If the rest of the Book of Heroes are like this, I'd say just scrap the whole thing, this is Team 5's poor game design at its finest.
Ooh, opinions. Can't be wrong, because it's just an opinion.
I think these adventures are just here to fill the space between bigger and better things. They are indeed lackluster compared to things they've done in the past and not terribly engaging.
But I also think they may have been suffering from difficulty with content due to the events of last (and this) year, so I'm willing to give them a break.
Plus, with the other stuff they've churned out and fixed in the meantime, it's not a big deal to me. Overall the game has been improving, so it's okay.
This basically started with the Demon Hunter intro. That one was great. You got good cards, you grew in power and got a huge dollop of lore in the fights.
Then we got Ashes of Outland and the Rusted Legion. Those fights were also rich in story, but the decks and the fights in question were a little sketchy.
Then we got the first Book of Heroes: Jaina. And that was rich in story too, but the fights were kind of bulshit and you didn;t really feel yourself get all that more powerful.
And then we got the rest of the Book of Heroes and it continued the downward trajectory to the point I stopped bothering with them altogether.
The lore is fun, but I KNOW the Lore, I know it better than it is represented in these fights. I play WoW and I follow the Lore there and have for many many years. I don;t need to do these Book of Heroes chapters to learn anything.
And the game play is just obnoxious. I understand not allowing us to create our own decks for this (I don;t agree, but I understand) and I understand not giving us the most powerful constructed decks to make it a bit of a challenge.
But what happens is that we get decks that even the biggest newb wouldn't take into these fights. Way too many of your cards are just flat out bad and there is often very little cohesion in the deck, making you flail at stringing together some kind of way to defeat fights.
And then there's the opponent decks and tricks. The fights are made artificially harder for no real purpose and there's often no real way to play things smart and circumvent the AI's gotcha plays. You just have to play the fight a bunch of times till you luck out and your draws line up correctly.
That's not "smart play" and it is certainly not entertaining. It makes getting through these Chapters a dreary excercise in patience while putting up with things you would never tolerate anywhere else in the game.
These Book fo Heroes fights could be CREATIVE, they could force you to beat the bosses in interesting ways with powerful cards and combinations. Instead you get a deck full of shitty cards and get asked to bang your head against the wall till it breaks by one sheer lucky attempt at it.
In short, I WANT to like Book of Heroes. I liked earlier incarnations of this same concept. What they are currently trotting out in these chapters is not good enough and I am simply not bothering with them anymore. 1 free pack is not worth the awful experience. I play this game for fun, and this ain't it.

The mode is litterely called "Book of Heroes", so ofcourse the Story is supposed to play a bigger role than the gameplay. And some of the fights were pretty unique and flavorfull.
How could they think a completely scripted fight could be fun? So I'm fighting against an opponent who always deals 12 face damage on turn 2 and 4+ on each following turn, always has a sap in hand, meanwhile I have to memorize which cards I draw in which order and how the AI reacts to them when played in order to get the mission done? How very stimulating...
This Valeera book is horribly designed. I get the enemy being scripted, but why are YOUR draws and cards scripted too? Every starting hand, every mulligan, every draw order is the same except the hero power steal. Is there literally only one specific order of playing these cards that can get you the win? There was one turn where I value traded a 3/3 into a 2/3 and it turns out I should've just gone face because next turn they just had lethal. I went face with that 3/3 after playing all previous cards exactly the same way and won. Is it just repetitive rote learning?
This adventure is fking bullshit... Always same in hand, always same cards draw on muligan... if there would not be deck after finishing, wouldnt play it at all. As someone said here before, Garon doing second turn 12 dmg face, then 4 each turn... i had to play it like damn 4times to win trough mirror image discovered by wand thief. Then ChoGall (or whatever is that 2 headed d*ckhead called) took me 3 games and now i face final prick that has some dumb shadows you have to destroy somewhat... first are easy, then he summons 2 at once so i thought that ill kill them with AoE... How many lives they have omg? I used aoe like for 14 dmg i guess and then they killed me anyway. Fck this adventure.
How the fuck did you won against Cho'Gall? That idiot is impossible!
I would tell you if I could get there...LOL!
I'm currently 0-10 vs. Garona. I had one game where I got her down to 2 HP w/ a Taunt minion on the board. She Sapped it and dealt lethal. This shit is getting old!
I only stumbled a few times versus Daerius, the Stormwind Assassin and it took me a lot of tries versus last Boss until i realised the Poisonous spell is to be used with Knife Juggler to juggle the Stealted Assassins. The fights are scripted but NOT impossible. Ive completed all the Bosses, got the Rogue Pack however i cannot open the pack (likely because of that Maiev bug).
P.S: Versus Garona i got a Mirror Image from one of my Wand Thiefs. Then Drew Jaina just on time for Water elemental freeze on Garona.
Some of these fights (like Garona, Cho'gall and Jorash) are just dumb and unfair. You get a deck full of random junk, like a Frenzied Felwing against a boss with no Health, and your opponent casually deals 12 damage face on turn 2? I understand that bosses should be OP because they always play much worse than players, but this is an unfun joke. You can't even hope for good draws sometimes since they are scripted. This was the least fun adventure from Book of Heroes and probably all adventures overall. You feel like punching a wall and hoping that somehow it breaks. That's not a way of making a fight hard, it's a way of making a fight dumb and frustrating. A perfect example of a challenging boss fight was The Lich King - it was hard, but not unbeatable with the right deck and strategy, and NOT FU*KING SCRIPTED FOR GOD'S SAKE. If they didn't give that one pathetic pack, I wouldn't bother playing this at all.
@MuchBotijo Don't overcommit turn 8 when he plays his Twisting Nether. Be lucky enough to get Clutchmother Zavas on hand, so it keeps discarding it. Other than that, the fight isn't hard. You just need to be lucky, so just keep trying a couple of times.
For the last fight against Ravenholt: Keep all cards on hand, play the 1 drop you draw turn 1. Kill his minion with your 2/1 for the mana crystal, but still hero power. Turn 3 Hero Power again. Turn 4 play the 1 drop plus Sabotage to remove the 7/5 that spawns from the secret he played. Afterwards you'll find your way through the midgame. Mind you, keep all further cheap minions on hand. Don't play anymore 1 drops. You need em to close out the game. Once you killed the first two invisible minions, wait until he plays another 2 invisible minions. Sometimes he does it in the same turn, sometimes he just plays one and then 2 more in the next turn. On that turn, play Knife Juggler, Poison on the Knife Juggler, then all the cheap minions you can to close out the game. The invisible minions are 1/15 and 1/16. They will kill you if you don't use Poison Knife Juggler to do this.
We’ve been going downhill for single player content since after Saviors of Uldum.
Galakrond’s Awakening was still far better than all these horribly boring missions. Although I will grant demon hunter PvE was not too bad, I really never felt the need for them to repeat it with other classes.
As someone who loves PvE & Multiplayer PvE, I was loving the improvements from Dungeon Runs to Rise of Shadows. I felt like we were getting solo content that far outclassed what was available before.
Of course they realized solo content wasn’t leading to more pack sales, so they found ways to monetize it for SoU & RoS but I guess it wasn’t making enough for them.
Idk I’m glad mercs is coming to change things up, but I did really enjoy the dungeon runs and was hoping they’d bring something like them back.
@n0Sp00n22 There's currently only three ways that I know that can beat her, all revolve around Taunt. Either you get Mirror Image from Wand Thief. You steal Garona's 6/8 Taunt through your hero power, or you use the Combo Weapon, Poison Blade + Oil to get your weapon to 9, then use Steeldancer for a Sleeping dragon. It will get Sapped, but you can replay it for some delay.
You only need to survive until you get Jaina to stick on board, after that your chances do increase. However, you're not in the clear yet. Garona can still draw her entire deck for the second Eviscerate. So if you drop to 8 health, beware that you can die instantly.
As someone who has absolutely zero knowledge about Warcraft lore except for whatever random things I've picked up on through this forum, I think the idea of telling the stories of the main heroes through short single player adventures is great, but the execution has been lacking. It started off pretty great IMO with the Jaina and Rexxar adventures, but it went downhill from there. The fights aren't fun, and the premade decks are atrocious and without flavour.
As Pherosizm also mentions, it's very likely that the pandemic and working from home has made a lot of things more problematic, and Book of Heroes could easily have been relegated in favour of more important stuff. It's a shame though, because I really liked getting to know the Hearthstone heroes. Especially Rexxar, who I knew literally nothing about aside from his name.
It's piss poor. Really boring, uninteresting, and in order to make them difficult, they give you decks that require multiple resets to highroll and win. For example, valeera's second mission is against an aoe control warrior, and you are given a lot of 1 health minions which just die to the plethora of aoe effects. Is this supposed to make it "challenging"? Miss me with that shit, if i wanted to play aggro rogue vs control warrior, I'd be laddering.
