Tony is the FIRST Golden card I ever made. Also he has the best card art. And a unique, highly useful effect. He's not even in the meta now. :(
And Frostbolt? Well, and Pyroblast? All iconic Mage spells. Pyro wasn't used too much but still...
Cards were removed for different reasons.
Some cards, like Gladiator's Longbow, Forked Lightning, Eye for an Eye, Redemption, were taken out because they never saw play.
Other's, like Wrath, Shield Block, Frost bolt, were seeing much more play than most other cards, they were basically an auto-include in the majority of decks they could be included in.
The remainder of cards, like Antonidas, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Eviscerate, Kill Command, were cards that enabled or were part of burst combo decks that were intended to kill the opponent in one swing. Because of this, they limited design space. They couldn't print 0 and low cost spells for mage without risk of giving them another infinite combo deck. Basically, they were possible problem cards.
Keep in mind, all of these cards may come back in the future. For all we know, in the next year or in the year after, we could see Antonidas come back into the Core set for a year.
