I have been rewatching the old expansion trailers and the shorts and i am curious what the actual reality is.
The innkeeper Hearth Stonebrew makes it seem like Hearthstone is a game, played in the tavern. The loading screen into the game is stepping into a tavern. The menu being a box. The animation short Hearth and Home, Free Pack Day, and Win or Lose all keep this idea going. Even Knights of the Frozen Throne has The Lich King making references to his deck. Same as Rafaam in League of Explorers...
And yet, every other expansion has it being played out as a story unfolding thru the medium of card and not really acknowledging it as a card game.
I am interested in what some of y'all thoughts are on this. Are all the adventures we play thru just stories being played out in the tavern with the innkeeper Hearth StoneBrew or is this a world like Yu-Gi-Oh where conflicts are resolved via a card battle game? Or is it both?

Just a weird late night thought.

You just blew my milking mind ! xD Haha
We definately see characters resolving their differences by playing the game (in the trailers etc). Also we travel thru world solving mysteries and we do that also by fighting it out so i guess it is YuGiOh reality xD
I think it's stories being (re)-told through the medium of cards. Like flashbacks in movies, sort of.
Picture Brann, Reno, Elise, Sir Finley, Rafaam, Madame Lazul, Dr. Boom, Toggwaggle and Hagatha all being old and grey sitting around the fire in the tavern and Reno goes: "Remember that one time in Uldum...?" and the scene morphs into that memory.
In the other corner you have Arthas, Uther and Jaina etc.
It's a mix of heroes and minions as well. So you could have a table with Illidan, Aranna, Jaraxxus and Guldan arguing about demons while Flame Imps keep the fire running.
I feel like it's a game somewhat developed by the Innkeeper and he has this sort of story telling through the cards we play. You could think of it as every card is a character of a story and the game itself between you and another player is a story being told by the Innkeeper and it all happens on his tavern.
To further support those ideas have a look here https://hearthstone.gamepedia.com/The_Innkeeper to the quotes of the innkeeper and his general lore which basically says that everything "in the game" happens on his Tavern. The tavern is basically a place where a lot of people in the WoW universe come together and the main attraction is the Hearthstone card game.

I love this thought. Foes and friends alike too old for the real fighting, sharing stories of the good ole days.
