Hey there! So I fell out of the game about halfway through the year of the dragon, long story that basically equates to I wasn't having fun with the game + other games were holding my attention more.
I'm sure you can guess where this thread is going from that alone but after reading these recent changes, I've kind of thought that Hearthstone could be something to pick up casually again. I was reading up on all the news here and it mentioned that there is some returning player Rewards thing that will offer packs as of patch 20.0 and so knowing that should I wait until that patch to fully return? Also any advice for someone returning after basically a year and a half? I think ill have like 12K in dust and a couple thousand gold, as well as have 0 interest in wild. (Duels sounds fun tho!)

Hi i'm Tyler and I play hearthstone and watch anime.
Sometimes i make cards. I'd like to do that for a career one day if ever possible.
I guess wait until the next expansion, meta is diverse but very Pepega at the moment. A lot of unfun things like AFK OTK decks, infinite value generation, super highroll decks etc. Even tier 5 meme decks are toxic like Tickatus.
I honestly don't know exactly what happens when you are a "returning player". More specifically, I don't know if you are prompted to pick a free deck immediately, or if you can wait for it to get updated. Since you have no interest in Wild, I wouldn't pick a deck that features cards from Year of the Dragon (many of which you might have already anyway). I hope someone knows better how that works.
The packs thing that was mentioned is also not really clear to me. It might be more beneficial to wait.
However, there are also reasons to get back to the game before the next patch:
Demon Hunter will no longer be obtained through the prologue, and the Initial set (or large parts of it) will rotate. I assume that after the patch, you can no longer get the full initial set from completing the Prologue.
Also, getting back into the game now, you can pick up some of the early rewards from the reward track, namely the free Darkmoon legendaries at level 1 and level 25 (which you should be able to get to in the remaining time). Reward tracks are tied to an expansion, so the current one will run out once the new set comes out. (Sidenote: You should probably read up on all the changes regarding in-game rewards, quests, packs and ladder... a few things have changed over the last year)
About Duels: I hate to say this, but Duels is not a good mode for new or returning players, especially for those who don't like Wild at all. The way Duels works, is that you pick a class, a hero power, and a starting treasure. Hero powers and treasures are (currently!) locked behind having a lot of cards from Scholomance Academy and Darkmoon Faire. Then you build a deck of 16 cards, which will also include several Wild sets (like Naxxramas and Old Gods, currently).
So, without basically any cards from last year, you won't have many deckbuilding options in Duels, and depending on whether or not you still have your old cards from Wild sets, you might also feel like not having what you need for the mode. To give you an example: One hero power (for each class) is unlocked by having a legendary of that class from Scholomance only. One of the starting treasuers is unlocked by having 150 unique (!!) cards from Darkmoon Faire. It's not that essential to have specific cards in your collection, or specific hero powers, just to have fun (or do well, even) in Duels, but the mode feels a bit shit when your options appear rather limited.
I personally would recommend Battlegrounds more, though I know some people don't like it very much. It's just a pretty nice mode to play casually, since it has no entry fees, no collection requirements, and the few "perks" you can purchase are not essential at all. Also, it's arguably the best way to get exp.
Just stay away... unless you enjoy being frustrated by the rng and matchmaking which ensure that there is an average 50% win rate across the board no matter what deck you play and how good you are ( or aren’t!)

I appreciate the advice! Might just do something like that since those cards would still be relevant. And yeah i thought pvp with treasures looked cool but if it's wild related i might just stick to standard.
To everyone saying the RNG stuff, this game is. Literally the way it is, good bad or otherwise, is what makes HS what it is. If it were a turn off (and it was at many times) i wouldn't even make this thread, but a LOT of what i hate is leaving with classic and basic, and I miss a card game i can play while im studying some skillshare or watching something in the BG. 💯
dont return to the game, the strategy of it has diminished to an almost non existent level, with random effects "balancing the game" rather than a more strategy based solution and the real money aspect has grown in large parts.

so basically it is less fun and it costs more
They literally give you more for free than they have ever given you at any point in the game before, by a good 100%. If you think the real money aspect is bigger than before, you don't actively play the game.
I bought the miniset with gold, bought probably 40 packs with gold, and have over 2k gold rn, and I've missed 5 or 6 weekly quests as well as probably 15 dailies.
if you don't understand how the game has become more expensive then you don't understand the game
I understand it perfectly. I have played since beta. Even just the last 4 sets, I spent $80 on the mega bundle for each. I was missing 20-30 cards from each set; I am only missing 3 cards from Darkmoon Faire. And I went back and bought ~20 packs of Scholo with gold to pull Vectus. Obviously, that means I got more value for the same amount of money.
I think you get a new deck if you stayed away from 4+ months. There is a point in waiting with claiming this deck until the new expansion comes up. It's in a month, so you still have some time to wait and if the paladin deck hasn't changed, then you can get a freshly nerfed legendary to disenchant (Alura) by picking that. If the reward is getting significantly higher, which they kind of implied lately and you'd rather wait a month than sacrificing gold/time, theres a point then.
There is the thing with the new rewards track being pretty generous in the beginning of the season, so playing for a month now might override the perks from waiting. I remember getting 1+ K gold, 5 packs and a legendary in the first few days , so Maybe I'd just start now and not worry too much about the in-game economy :)
I think you can get Alura with the paladin and Jandice in the rouge starter deck. They are sick legendary cards from this year. In case you wanted to know ;)
As a beta player, best advice I can give you is select a mode that you like above all else and work on that.
For example, if you only care about ranked standard, then wait for the expansion release and a few days after release, check HS replay for the top 2 meta decks and focus on crafting those to reach legend with.
Dont spread all your resources too thin if you want to stay F2P that is.

Some general advice (about decks, packs, catching up strategy) was mentioned here earlier today: https://www.hearthpwn.com/forums/hearthstone-game-modes/standard-format/247591-blast-from-the-past#c5
