I'm glad that Duels is actually a CCG format - and a singleton one at that - since Battlegrounds was an entirely different genre of trash mobile game shoehorned into the Hearthstone client for visibility.
That said Duels got boring fast and I think the mode needs more unique cards to keep things interesting. The slightly tweaked/buffed hero powers and one unique card per class then a bunch of random OP/shit treasure modifiers as you go through a run doesn't change the fundamental gameplay all that much from the constructed formats.
The heroes are also badly balanced so far but someone above said BG heroes have received a lot of tuning (I'll take your word for it) so hopefully, these will as well.
It is way too early to make any conclusions about Duels yet though, so I'd caution some of the posters above to slow down on the rush to judgment. Although I will be waiting a long time to play any more runs, I am not going to write the format off when it is still in such an early stage.
Fun, different, deckbuilding skill oriented, and progressive at that.
Wears out real fast though due the difference in heroes, and more so in minion/spell treasures is too polarized, it's like BG one on one with Queen Togwaggle vs Jandice sometimes. If they get to balancing it as much as they do BGs, we should have a great long-term one. If they keep yogg'ing though, it ain't gonna live long.
Not skill oriented at all stfu
Agreed! There’s nothing skill oriented in hearthstone. If you play black jack you learn from experience and you become better with time but luck ultimately defines if you win or lose.
Now add a sophisticated algorithm to that with regards to who you play against and there you have it
"Nothing skill oriented"
"You get better over time"
Someone needs to learn words and what they mean.
“... but luck ultimately defines if you win or lose. Now add a sophisticated algorithm to that with regards to who you play against and there you have it”
someone needs to learn the whole sentence before they ridicule themselves
WAY more enjoyable than battlegrounds IMO. The limited pool kind of nudges new players out of highly competitive play I'd imagine, but overall the concept is great and I think it'll be better moving forward. The lack of hero powers and treasures currently available definitely limit the potential. but it's only going to get better with the full release.
You can like or dislike battleground and it is fine. Especially now, battleground is quite unbalance due to elementals and many people can dislike it.
But battleground is a real new game mode. Battleground is a totally new game mode, it is not a dungeon run in pvp like Duels. Calling Duels a new game mode is an heavy word, it is a fake new game mode.
This, This was the thing i was looking in the comments. Duel's is NOT a new game mode. Its just arena with a new dress. And thats the only reason why i am dissapointed with it

Im sure i will be able to bend space and time to get better 3 options in time. Yep truly getting better.

Cool, you found ONE opinion to validate how you feel.
A game mode is a distinct configuration that varies gameplay and affects how other game mechanics behave.
It has elements of Arena and Dungeon Run. Class Specific hero powers and Class Specific items do offer enough distinction to change gameplay even though you want to focus on the similarities. From a game design perspective this a new mode because it changes the mechanics enough even though it does borrow from PVP and PVE game modes. Sure, it's not the most original concept but calling it Arena with a twist just you trying to push semantics in your favor to fit your view.
There's no right or wrong answer here. You will either like duels or you won't. It really is that simple. I haven't played it myself but I suspect I'll love it. I LOVED the single player dungeon runs that had this format. So, I suspect that I'll love duels.
Me personally, once duels are out, I'm not sure I'll even play regular constructed anymore. That's how I feel now but we'll see how I feel 2 weeks in. I mean, I play standard and damn does it not take long for the meta to get f**king stale. But duels? It's literally different every single time because you and your opponent's are going to be offered different treasures and different buckets forcing you to adapt on the fly.
It's one of the things I love about Arena and drafting your deck, while playing against others with a drafted deck. You never know what to expect, so you adapt on the fly and try to make the best play. Of course, most can't afford to play arena constantly and will struggle to go infinite. But for people like me that crave an ever changing format, that's completely resolved once duels have gone live.
From what I've seen watching streams, I see no reason at all why I won't enjoy duels.

In duels there are much bigger power swings than the arena has due to the random nature of the stronger treasures (and some pick-only minions). You definitely can face some good cards/combos in the arena and will lose to them but it usually feels like you have a chance to overcome if you had a good start or can counter those bombs.
However, by mid-run in duels, you can start running into some treasure/hero combos that just make for complete non-games that feel like hitting a brick wall if you didn't similarly get lucky with your treasures.
I'm not saying you won't like it, just that it is significantly different than arena in this regard - power level and variance are both higher so be prepared for that or you may be frustrated with the experience, especially so once they start charging an entry fee for the heroic duel version.
As a long time Dungeon player who got lucky with a Twitch Drop: It's been fun. I know that some games will be decided by OP treasures, but that's the nature of treasures. Sometimes you get steamrolled, but sometimes you get to drive the steamroller. But I doubt I'll do much with heroic mode.
People saying it trash mode are complaining about a beta e a mode. It’s not fully out and you guys are calling it trash. Go play ur bgs and let us enjoy the mode for f god sake .
Card collection and deck-building skills are more or less irrelevant. It is all about high-rolling on those first treasures. Right now, playing Warrior, I picked Wax Rager as a treasure and later I was offered Totem of the Dead, for an immortal, endlessly reproducing 5/1...my next 2 opponents gave up on t5 after realizing what is going on....
It is about highrolling if your deck building skills are crap. You're not wrong there. when you have deck building skills that are bad they don't effect the outcome.
By the third run, having seen almost constant Demon Hunters:
The DH starting treasure definitely needs to be changed. There are only a few classes that can deal with the tempo from 3 big demons for 4 mana, especially early in a run. I will say though I rarely see DH at high wins, recently it's been a lot of Shamans and Mages. Shaman hero power is kinda stupid early too, since they can threaten Bloodlust lethal very easily at little cost and the Totem that casts random spells is way better in this mode because the spell pool is really small and mostly positive.
Yeah, that's because their treasure is so highrolly, so to get past 3-6 wins with it you have to build a fast deck due to your low hps. Then you hopefully get a luck demon bucket as hps get higher and the game gets a big more controlly. plus it's easy to get higher then average wins with a fast deck. probably many don't realize this though.
I got very lucky and got a twitch drop so I was able to try it out today. So far its super fun I really like the mode. I imagine when all the treasures and hero powers get unlocked it will only be even crazier and more unique.
That said I am concerned that hero powers and treasures will be locked based on what is in your collection. Especially since we know this is going to be on legendaries and epics. This feels really restrictive and I think will hurt letting people get into the mode.
Duels is just hearthstone devs doubling down in casuals if you’re playing any mode in hearthstone and looking for skillful gameplay you have the wrong game, this entire game is a slot machine, ladder, duels, battlegrounds. It’s all slots. The most skill intensive mode was arena and no one plays that cause it’s too hard for casuals.
casuals spend money
blizz wants money
casuels like to lol/meme
hearthstone is rng clown fiesta.
But be aware Bliz put a pay2win wall on BG they will do the same to duels. Likely they will only offer you two treasures unless you pay them $20 a month for title pass.
but i have enjoyed 0% of my games against mages, regardless of which class i am being. i don't know how to put my finger on what the issue is, but it is just... bad feeling.
otherwise, a fun casual time, if you're looking to screw around and not be worried about it being competitively balanced. i'll play the free way when i'm burned out on ladder and/or bg, but doubt i'll ever enter the heroic mode once it's launched, way too high-rolly to feel good about trying to actually succeed
It definitely has potential as a mode, once all the treasures and hero powers are released. But right now, it’s not too satisfying for me just because some of the heroes are just way more powerful than the others (Shaman and Mage in particular). Mage’s hero power just makes playing 1 health minions / tokens impossible and Shaman is just way too overturned with Bloodlust in the constructed pool.

I dont like it. Honestly, getting steamrolled by treasures and overpowered hero powers just doesnt do it for me.

The funniest thing about Duels is this:
Blizzard presented with mystery a "new game mode" logo for months.
People were in super hype.
A new game mode? When will it be released? What will this modality be like?
Many questions for months.
Then Duels. Total disappointment in seeing Kobolds and Catacombs again in PVP.
This is the story to how to totally destroy people's expectations. Like Diablo Immortal. It is not so such a sensational but similar attitude.
Blizzard now is a master in creating super hype and one second after super disappointment.

It's arena on steroids - pretty fun!
Personally, I'm on the fence with it.
The treasures are too polarizing. They either win you the game or lose you the game.
I'm hoping they start balancing the treasure like they do in BGs.
i think it is generally fun.
