is there a place to look up how many people play hearthstone in total and how many of them are legend? I ask that to better classify my own performance.
i am legend 6700 ish, in wild, and facing bronze 5 players...
You face bronze 5 players while you are legend? :O Seems like a strange match-making-system. I´m approx. 15k standard-legend and i hit other legend-player in similar ranges only.

But I think his situation has completely to do with it being wild. Wild Hearthstone currently has about 14 people playing it, so the matchmaking is a bit different.

The matchups are ONLY based on mmr not on the actual rank.

Not entirely true. It's based on MMR in Legend and outside of Legend while you have a star multiplier of x2 or higher. If you are outside of Legend and your multiplier is x1 then you will be matched according to rank.
I would not even bother to find out. Reaching legend now is no big feat. I pushed to reach legend when they implemented the new ranking system because of the legendary card reward. Once you reach legend your ranking keeps plummeting if you don't keep playing consistently. Now, I am happy just reaching D5 (very easily) regularly and fool around with decks. There was a time when reaching Legend really meant something even if we know that HS rewards resilience not skill, that's the main reason why reaching legend gives no clout. Now HS has become a game that I can play as a pleasant distraction and I can dedicate more time to fun games like ARK. Still love playing the game but like I said ranking means nothing now.

Accurate af.
The new system has severely diluted the value of hitting legend. I would say around 30k people hit legend this month. I say this because I have a friend at 29600 and he never faces people below him ( he went 5-5 in 10 games) always higher rank people but it could just be luck.
Hello card game fans,

To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffer!

Always expect the unexpectable!

Is there any possibility to find out how many players are currently playing on legend?
no.
