I looked at the post from Ben Lee, the reactions, and your post that got downvoted.
I think you might have picked the wrong tone? It is a bit patronizing (and speaking of "whining" is overused in this context), which isn't the best approach to convince people of something, especially since you cannot say for sure that the Battle Pass will be purely about cosmetic items. What Ben Lee said was that they are "investigating broadening the benefits of the existing Tavern Pass system to supplement the rewards of the upcoming progression system with exciting new cosmetics". I'm not even sure what that's supposed to mean, but apparently, the Tavern Pass will somehow add to the (possible) Battle Pass with cosmetics.
Anyway, I agree with you that in this case, most of the rather aggressive, negative responses seem out of place. At face value, it doesn't sound like some sort of "Battle Pass" (or whatever system they want to implement at the end of the year) is going to make things worse for anyone. And I think the efforts of the development team over the last year have mostly been going in the right direction, that is making the game better for everyone, so I'll be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
But I can understand that the idea of a Battle Pass generally sounds fishy to some. Most gamers associate Battle Passes with nothing but monetization, which is usually not in their favor, and the backlash is a mixture of cynicism and mistrust. They expect the Battle Pass to be the most egregious money grabbing scheme of all time, possibly while cutting down on the F2P experience, and any word from a developer indicating otherwise is "the Bli$$ard" trying to play it down because money company bla bla. It's not unexpected, to say the least.
Generally speaking, I'm not happy with the circumstance that a lot of people are a bit too hasty in pulling out their torches and pitchforks, and the tendency to overreact isn't making for the most enjoyable atmosphere here either (or anywhere else online, for that matter). Not much you can do about that, except for debating on the level you wish to see from other people. Yet as far as that is concerned, I don't find your approach to be much better, because "rightfully praising Blizzard" and decrying any kind of criticism isn't making things better either. If your main concern were that "haters" outnumber the "lovers" here, you would be part of the problem.
Criticism is generally helpful, and even the overly negative stuff is not necessarily a bad thing. Saying that there's no unhelpful feedback is maybe a bit too idealistic, and some "criticism" hardly deserves being regarded as such, but even if people go oveboard in their reactions, it serves as an indicator for bad communication, or a lack of trust between parties, or what kind of concerns people have. It highlights what problems exist or remain, which shouldn't be ignored. You don't need to explain yourself if someone's shouting unfounded accusations in your direction, but you should take it as a sign that your words or actions might be misinterpreted by some people. For example, the people who complain about "too much Battlegrounds" whenever there's a Battlegrounds update make it clear that communicating a BG update without mentioning other game modes leaves a bad impression with some people, and the developers might want to improve how they communicate these updates, like including news or updates for other game modes whenever possible in fewer blogposts.
This much should be clear to anyone somewhat concerned with PR, including game developers. They can't afford to not engage with their community, and it would be a terrible advise to not get some feedback on new ideas.
I wish we can just say we're disappointed in humanity. Every gaming community has some levels of toxicity that were never seen just a few years ago. Racism, while slowly fading, is still present and real. We're not keeping up with how our friends and families are doing and everyone's mental health is suffering because of it (even if not plainly noticeable).
It's much harder to realize something is missing in comparison to something in the way unless you've been there before. (a pro gamer watching a novice would instantly see misplays or something small like positioning mistakes). The same way we struggle to have certain information available to clients in my line of work and a feeling of emptiness that you suddenly realize after so long not realizing it was there.
I'm going to try the best I can to bring positivism in every aspect of my life from now on, at work, home, or here in my free time. Hopefully it can spread, maybe starting with you, and with that, I hope you all have a good night and wake up well in the morning :)
That was so sweet! :)
My opinion on the matter is that life is becoming harder and harder for everyone. It is like natural selection is back to prey on the weak, but in such a disgusting way that seems to be completely unnatural. Not only people have to learn to survive in a world that is constantly in change and very hard to keep up, but also to find real love and realize their dreams in a very hostile enviroment. And talking about love, I'm fully aware most people really struggle against society's today standards of "the perfect couple", nowadays more than ever. Seriously, there is too much competition out there. It doesn't matter how much of a good or cool person you are, there always will be someone considered much more nicer and/or cooler than you out there. It doesn't matter how much handsome you are or how much big your package is (sorry, had to say it), there is always someone more good looking or "bigger" than you out there. And yeah, you would say: but some people really don't care about such things on a couple, at least not to such extremes, which is true, but society is always trying to convince you one way or another that such a thing is a lie, and believe me, media is very good at it! ;)
In summary, globalization is finally putting humanity to the test, and not everyone feels ready to compete with all the monsters out there.
However, ever since Raz Rumble it has been consistent and very helpful. The meta has seemed fun and more engaging and less boring than in the past thanks to Blizzard’s thankless efforts.
Do you realize how ridiculous this sounds? Such arbitrary statement? Yes, this is not the best community. Many members of it are plain idiots. And people do like to complain about everything. But to say that "the meta is fun and more engaging" is just... no. You realize that "fun" and "engagement" are subjective terms? And if people talk about the game being not fun, it's not because they like to waste time on pointless babble, but, just maybe, they don't find it actually fun?
o.O
So you missed the part where he wrote it seems fun, even though it's included in the quote you replied to? Or did you just ignore it, since that would invalidate your entire point towards OP?
I also think you need to look up the word "arbitrary".
After reading the entirety of the thread this is a high quality "I whine about their whining thread". For everyone to lazy to read the essay, you are welcome.
But honestly i am always curious about these threads and make the same question without never taking an answer. Why do you care?
I can undestard when someone is salty with any game he plays. Regardless whether the rage is justified or not, it has to do with the game he spends his time on and affects him.But why on earth would anyone care about the opinions of others on a game they enjoy.Do you think that game is great and blizzard is fair? Then more power to you.But getting annoyed about what random dudes and gals say about the game you enjoy...sorry but that is pathetic.
I think it's that the poster's ego is attached to the Hearthpwn community. If they see a lot of negative comments they feel like they are personally attacked so do all they can to defend/protect it. You see it fairly often from fans of other games too.
In my experience people only really take to the web to voice their opinion when they either love or hate a thing. They rarely bother to say when things are okay or going according to plan, that's why there is so much hyperbole and conflict.
You're disappointed because you're able to enjoy the game in a casual way. As an addict (regularly Legend with a complete collection up to Outland), this game has ruined extensive periods of my life and I see it as the devil made video game. I absolutely don't see how such a rigged money-making machine can generate anything but a very toxic community and bring the worst in a lot of people (see all the reports of aggro players sending friends requests after being defeated, only to insult their adversary's entire family).
So good for you, but I'm happy to see HS's numbers crumble and I can't wait for this shit to disappear entirely, then go back to playing Breath of the Wild (an actual video game).

How exactly it invalidates? The entire point is that to the OP the meta is more fun and engaging. Basically seems plays a role of "in my opinion" in this case. So the statement is arbitrary, because the bottom line of the OP is "people shouldn't complain, because in my personal opinion the meta is fun".
Again, it's not arbitrary. Something arbitrary is random or without reason, often used in the context of application of authority. By your logic, almost any expression of personal opinion would be arbitrary.
And your point is invalid because you've created a big straw man. OP wrote it "seems" like the meta is fun and engaging. You've either not read that part or chosen to ignore it (even though you've quoted it) - because your condescending rant makes no sense if OP actually has considered these to be subjective terms. Which, in my opinion, he clearly has.
He's not claiming to be factually "right" as far as I can see, he's expressing his opinion. Which you yourself write above.
Arbitrary can be used to describe a statement which forces personal opinion upon others. So the statement IS arbitrary.
And as I said, I obviously know the statement is his opinion. The problem which you want to ignore so badly is that he uses his personal view to disregard others' opinions.
If you actually read everything carefully, you would notice that his rant (at least the part I quoted) isn't "I think the game is fun". It is "the game is fun to me and people keep whining, because they disagree with me". So he is whining about people whining due to having a different view than he does.
Also if you read his original post, which was heavily downvoted, you would see that it was rude, much worse than this rant. Clearly the dude disregards everyone, who dares to have a different opinion and calls every form of discussion presenting a different view "whining". Yeah, totally not arbitrary.

I didn't read his original post, and I don't really care to. I don't necessarily agree with him, if only because "NERF IT NOW"- and "I'M QUITTING HS 4EVER"-post have been standard procedure in the first month after every expansion for as long as I've been on here. So it's nothing new.

maybe that's why you suggested they charge players 100$ a year with "full access" to play this game. talking about hilarious.

Dude, just stop. It IS a choice when you sit down and fire up hearthstone...you know you'd rather be playing Breath of The Wild (and until you've finished it, who wouldn't?) so just do it. after you beat hte compulsion a couple of times you'll realise that it was less of an addiction and more just laziness - hearthstone is not crack.
You absolutely have a point, however, it is mostly a matter of being aware of the posting users. Keep an eye on that, and you will realize there are some highly active users that seem to have made it their mission to spread negativity (I think we all know some of major players here). They do it to such a degree, that they even go into threads with positivity, just to ensure they get to spew their bile - and yea, that is quite frustrating, but realizing how few (albeit zealous) they are can be a comfort.
@jainaishot: First off, been dying to know for a long time: Why did you shoot Jaina? Secondly though, it’s not to do with a difference of opinion. It is fine to have threads where people can voice their concern about the game, no beef with that. It’s when every single thread is invaded by it, no matter the topic, that is when it gets problematic. I’m sure you saw Sherman’s slightly facetious thread about praising Team5. It had a title that undoubtedly inviting for an opportunity to share positive feelings about the development team, but instead it was a figurative flood of negative posters. So you may ask why the people with a positive attitude care (which I think I covered), but to me the question should be reversed. Why do the negaholics feel a need to impose on every remotely positive topic they come across?
Because some people think bad = cool. It's that simple. You now, media and all that stupid shit about bad boys being more popular and having all the girls, LMFAO! XD
YEAP basically in a nutshell. Nerfs happen: BLIZZARD TRYING TO SHILL MONEY New Event: BLIZZARD TRYING TO SHILL MONEY Battlepass gets announced: BLIZZARD TRYING TO SHILL MONEY
Yeah the last one is true, but then again literally every game is doing a battlepass these days. Most people really bother reading all of the post. All they see is words and they just assume its some PR bs and post a comment, which leads the next person to read the comments and repost the same misinformation. Hell just for the heck of it let's try this out.
THE HEARTHPWN COMMUNITY IS PERFECTLY FINE STOP HATING BRO
Blizzard: *Gives something for F2Ps with a small P2P additional benefits and guarantee to not get 3rd card until you have all of the same rarity* Community: Pay to win! Get better Blizzard, what do you mean we only get 6 free packs and random legendary? Random one? Why cannot I pick?! That's not enough! I cannot afford my 35 golden legendary troll deck with your puny f2p stuff!
I paid for the damn $85 pre-order and I don't even have all of the epics (or even half of them?). That's a ton of money to sink into something virtual. Especially when what I do get, loses a ton of value in a year and change because of the set rotation. (Which there... is almost no compensation for)
And yeah, I know I knew what I was buying and there was no guarantee. But that doesn't mean I can't complain about the pretty abysmal value. And the fact that I can't even afford to compete with a lot of higher tier decks because they keep making epics and legendaries MORE and MORE relevant every expansion. This isn't like an RPG or strategy game or something where you're buying new content. It's a competitive game where you need to keep up if you want to rank up. Which, by the way NOW is a way to actually gain cards/rewards to help keep up with the meta as it is.
To say nothing of the fact that they increased the number of sets 3 years ago, and have BARELY compensated for the fact that we have to buy 50% more cards every year just to keep up with the meta.
Maybe I'm being "whiny" or maybe these are just legitimate concerns, and criticizing Blizzard isn't just a matter of "put up or shut up" and maybe that's a crappy attitude to have about reasonable feedback.

THE HEARTHPWN COMMUNITY IS PERFECTLY FINE STOP HATING BRO
Isn't it awesome, dude, the power to spread your thoughts in other people's minds like a plague from behind a keyboard while eating popcorn? If such a thing happening on a video game forum annoys you that much, I can't even imagine how you feel about real life.
Unfortunately it seems that’s how humans react to change or unknown stuff.
I also see this in other games and their forums. In World of Tanks for example if you look in the forum before every new patch ( when they announce it) an outsider would think WG is completely incompetent and the game dies in a couple days. ( It’s almost a standard that people threaten to quit or stop spending money). Even if they make a REALLY good patch where my buddies say; NOW literally none can complain.... And they just shake their heads when I read from the forum.
But the mods there know that only a small minority is so invested and easily triggered by any changes, and impossible to satisfy, that they respond to them ( if it’s somewhat respectful and constructive) , but obviously they know it’s not as black and white how people portray it.
This is actually also something that triggers me a bit when streamers only pay attention to negative comments. Even if 99% are positive, the human mind is made to learn from bad things that’s why we pay attention to it ( but I do think a good streamer should find a balance to that and ignore sometimes a flat out insulting guy) .

Even if 99% are positive, the human mind is made to learn from bad things that’s why we pay attention to it ( but I do think a good streamer should find a balance to that and ignore sometimes a flat out insulting guy) .
