Blizzard hasn't implemented a tournament mode yet, and the teased "new game mode" for scholo expac could be it.
Lots of speculations have been made on how this could work and how hard it is to make it right, but I feel that a very good example for this type of game structure is Mario Tennis Ace on the Nintendo Switch.
It has a tournament mode with something like 32-players bracket, BUT, the way it works is actually pretty smart. You don't know who is participating, the names are hidden, and for a good reason because the AI doesn't know either. What it means is that when you start a tournament, you'll be paired against someone who is, like you, just starting round 1. When you win that game, you can either continue right away and be paired with an opponent who is on round 2 like you, and so on, OR, you can simply stop, keep your rank as a round 2 contestant, and come back later to continue your tournament. It's a win-win for everyone, QoL is very good, and the tournament format can be really brought out to a certain value.
Of course, you can add twists like ELO, leagues, rewards, or whatever to keep all the playerbase interested. But I really think this is the best possible plot to make a tournament mode viable in Hearthstone!
