I've played Hearthstone since Naxxramas but needed a break from it since I grew bored with Uldum and havent played constructed since. I did a few arena runs and still checked out Galakrond mechanics and cards but have no experience with post Uldum decks.
I always enjoyed slower control decks, I don't care much about winrate but mostly about the fun of unique interactions and big cards (Handlock, Confessor Paletress inspire priest, Lucientbark Heal Druid, Pogo Rogue ,...) and also have a soft spot for highlander decks.
I've got nearly all of the classic class sets completed and also have 25000 dust to spend.
So my question would be: Which fun standard decks can you recommend to me that not everbody plays, but still have some decent chance against the current meta. I'm used to get overrun by aggro from time to time, but I don't wanna insta concede if I see a specific deck.
Would appreciate it if you had some suggestions for me. :)
It depends if you play wild or standard. In wild i play Dead man's hand warrior. You probably know how this deck works, becouse you are experienced player, but if you don't : you grind opponent out of resources. You don't attack him, you just counter 30 cards. When you see your opponent without cards in hand, deck and battlefield you feel proud. Your deck goes infinite. I don't know any fun deck for standard, but if you like fun in wild i'd recommend you watching solem, dane or roffle. I hope I'm helpful
Edit : It is even possible to get to the legend but it is hard and you have to have a good list
I got you, I also enjoyed slower and unique decks. At the moment I play my own version of a control highlander priest in Legend (current rank 5000). It is strong. I add Galakrond and cards that steal from my opponents deck, which makes the deck also unpredictable and kinda fun. I have a positive winrate against all aggro match ups and never saw another playerusing this deck. You can check it under my profile if you like :).
Galkarond Priest and Highlander Mage are pretty good candidates for the playstyle you describe. Each game will be pretty unique, and you can win plenty of games with them.
Lots-o-legendaries though. Hopefully you picked Highlander mange as your welcome back bonus deck?
I feel you dude. Unfortunately there are almost no strictly control decks that are competetive in standard. You have Highlander Hunter, but it shifted in a bit more Midrange direction. Probably the best you can have is highlander Mage or Priest. They are both control decks and have a decent amount of fun tools, but unfortunately they aren't good enough in this meta. If you want some real control I would recommend playing wild, since it has more control decks. Renolock is still doing pretty good, as well as Raza Priest and Reno Mage. As someone steted before you can also pull off some Dead Man's Hand Warrior deck. 25000 dust is a lot so you don't really have to worry about it and I suggest starting with Reno Mage, because it's fairly cheap and uses generally good cards like Reno Jackson, Reno the Relicologist, Zephrys the Great, Frost Litch Jaina and Kazakus.
I hadn't faced any all meta but yesterday I stumbled into 3 Quest Warlocks. I don't know how good the deck is in the current meta, but I am sure almost nobody plays it and it is a very slow control-ish deck with possibility for some fancy OTK combos in the late game
Honestly I wouldn’t recommend coming back to this game regardless of what mode you you play. Especially since you enjoyed control decks.
If you try control in wild, prepare to hate this game. So many of the popular “meta decks” in wild ruin the game for anyone who liked playing a control or value oriented deck. Res priest is unwinnable, Jade Druid is unwinnable without teching geist, can’t outvalue cubelock, raza priest doesn’t care what you do because you’ll be dead from 30 life or more anyway, and I hope you iré ready for secret mages constantly spamming all their cards to the face and not interacting with your deck at all. Better run Reno and zephrys or get demolished by that or the Baku cancer demon hunters. If you survive those, good luck surviving quest mage who can take three straight turns or spam a board full of 8/8s for 0 mana
Standard is about as bad on control decks too. It’s devolved into card generator spam like lackeys or other discover mechanics. Now the rogue you are playing against can play a fast tempo deck with almost no late game and drop legendary dragons and other powerful late game cards just by playing lackeys. Don’t like that? Too bad because your next opponent is a res priest! Remember that mechanic that’s been around for years that people constantly complain about? Don’t worry it’s not unhealthy at all it’s fair and balanced.
Control is pretty much dead in either mode. The game you are coming back to is in a horrible state if you played during the launch and Naxx. Don’t let this community tell you any different. I’m sure I’ll get replies talking about how I’m salty or how I’m not playing correctly or not using the right deck, even though I’ve played since launch. The community here is dismissive of any kind of criticism towards anything and just talk down to you for it. As far as they are concerned they can play a deck like face hunter and emote spam without interacting with any of the cards in your deck while roping you every turn and then say that you are the problem and laugh at you. People in hearthstone will play these decks just to laugh at other people despite the detriment to the playerbase
I highly suggest checking out another card game like Magic or Legends of Runeterra.

Control certainly isn't dead in wild. Highlander decks still work and you can still beat combo decks.

Thanks for the suggestions, will try the mage, priest and hunter highlander decks. :)
