Isn't the purpose of being free-to-play to try it out until you decide it's good/fun enough to be worth your money?

 A true free to play game won't need you to spend money on it to do whatever you want to do, take for example most of the Battle Royale games that have come out over the years.

 They still rely on income of some kind though otherwise who is going to pay the people designing and maintaining the game? Now for some games, that can be purely cosmetic items. Games like Fortnite for example. The way to stand out in a lot of those sorts of games are skins, mounts, hair styles, whatever it is. Some of these games charge obscene amounts for a skin but there are enough people who care enough that they will buy it and thus keep the freebie players going as well.

Pure f2p people get by very much like those that rely on the state for their income, housing etc. Its purely because other people pay in and support the system. Without them it would collapse and the free loaders would be the first to suffer.

If I start playing a game as a free player and get a certain amount of hours out of it, I will make sure to buy something at least. You will always get entitled people though and they will generally lack any awareness or empathy for the bigger picture and those part of it, such as the peole developing the game.

 You're looking at it wrong. First and foremost this is a game. You should be playing it to have fun. If you are looking at it from a purely time=money perspective then well....no game is truly worth the time investment.

You could break down almost any game into 'x activity will take me y hours, I could earn x in that amount of time'

The gold is a currency earned whilst playing, if it's a chore just to play then you might be better off putting the game down for a bit or even all together.

I don't really track my gold, I buy packs with whatever I have for a few weeks after am expansion and then just stop and save. I'm at almost 3500, I cant tell you how long it's taken, I've not tracked it nor do I care Tom I've just played and enjoyed the game. If I don't feel like playing, I don't. It builds up naturally.

Time = money is probably the most flawed argument that one can come up with. Time =/= money unless you would earn money from investing your time. If I sit down and jerk off for half an hour how much money did I just lose? How much money did you lose today while prepping that 5$ meal? Did you lost more than 5$ worth of time from doing so or did you lose money?

Just buy it?
