With the new ranking system, yes it happens quite a lot. At legend rank 5k I already face many diamond players, so just imagine what people at legend rank 50k face. It must be players at platinum or even lower.
Same here. Since reaching Legend (EU wild), I mostly face Platinum players.
Between Diamond 5 and 1 matching seemed to have worked by rank (almost exclusively saw other Diamond players. Actually the same bunch of people over several days...)
But now on Legend matching seems a bit arbitrary.
I thought that without star bonus you should be matched by rank? I really don't get it. How is this fair for the people who are trying to ladder from Platinum to Diamond?
ummm... come to think of it, this is a new game design, and I appriciate this innovation... somehow :P~~~
1. first of all, this is not about "material" fairness, since what you can get from Legend is actually not much.... 1 pack for 1 month is not much. And only first time you get a legendary. So what you get is actually the frame and fun to play against better player @ legend. Being in diamond is, in fact, not "materially" different from being in legend by much.
If we talk about fairness of "what rank should I be ranked". I agree this can seems unfair, in a way that you deserve a rank and does not get it. However if what I want is to play with high-skiller, I already got what I want once I get to diamond :P~~~ . So in term of purposes, this ranking is not very important after a certain rank.
2. when you @ legend lost a legend game, you will be put to face some platinum / diamond players. This means HS is letting you to pass down your experience to train the lower ranks. This is good for the lower rank in terms of training. This may also be good for the ladder since it provides greater challenges for diamond and platinum, which may improve the game experience, making you more sticky.
3. so what does 2. means ?? since most legend players are using very strong decks, it would create an ecology for lower ranks.
a. To climb ladder, you at least need a strong deck. Budget or f2p decks will have harder time. this means you need to get better cards. This is good for HS.
b. To climb ladder, you need to polish your oppo deck guessing (which means you need to read into commonly seen decks and get to know them) + polish your resource allocation during game. this means you need to learn decks / cards / untold play rules . This gives pro-players / KOLs good among of audiences.
c. To climb ladder FAST, you need to know the meta trend and put out decks to counter them. i.e. you need more information collection work. This will makes replay sites / trackers many oppotunities.
4. what really needs to be designed is : how challenging to diamond / platinum player should it be ?? oppos legend@500 / 5000 / 50000 ?? this will be a very open question and can only be tested out and fine-tuned. If this is too challenging for lower ranks, they may got beaten severe and leave the game early, this is bad for the ladder. I think HS is still trial-and-erroring on this. Low rank players being too beaten will be very bad for HS business.
wht is not very good here is, this MMR design is not told very clearly to the players in advance, and you cannot see wht rank you are facing from below, which is a bad feel.
But anyway, it seems we have figured it out somehow. :P~~~
Is it normal that Diamond or Platinium players face Legend players??

It's not fair. I posted in another thread what has to be improved.
