Which mode (BG or ladder) is more skill-demanding? I play mostly wild ranked, but sometimes play BG. In wild I have legend rank and in BG 6300 MMR. And I find ranked ladder less random mode, because it`s more interactive. Battlegrounds actually looks like casino slots. Maybe I am noob in BG so correct me if i am wrong.
BG is skill dependent, when you have a decent hero and are a bit lucky. If you are just aiming to win (Place 4 or better), that's pretty easy to do. But going for the 1st place can work or you fail miserably.
You need more skill in BG than it looks like for an outsider, but there is little to non variation, so its not that hard to become decent in all situations. It is true it is highly random but that is also something that requires skill.
I would say ranked has decks highly despentand on skill, and deck with little to non required. Therefore I dont think you cant say the modes are more or less skill demanding than the others.
I feel like it depends on your goal in bg, i have found that i can generally make it into top 4 by skill alone (unless i get super unlucky). Winning the match generally depends on luck though. Its still a very hard thing to compare since you can play decks that require a lot thinking and decks that don't.

In bgs, the skill comes in during the building process. In ranked, it comes in during the playing process. (Deck building initially takes skill but once established most everyone copy pastes the established lists).
Bgs require faster thought than ranked. You generally have more time and less options during your turns in ranked. The shopping phase of Bgs, especially early and when you’re not established, requires a great deal of thought. Do you play it safe to get top 4? Do you try to highroll to get top 2? When is the right time to pivot your strategy? There are a lot of factors to consider during the shopping phase. The combat, however, is mostly all RNG. Taunts and positioning can somewhat dictate the action, but not much else beyond that.
Ranked is the opposite. In most cases you know all 30 cards in the opposing deck, and what to play around. The skill comes in on what to mulligan, how to play out your hand, establishing your plan (value, tempo), when to go all in and when to hold. It’s not always a straight line.
Bgs are also more difficult in the early turns whereas ranked is generally more difficult the later the game is going. In ranked, the less mana you have the more limited, therefore “easier” the plays are. If you’re holding 2 five mana cost cards, but only have 3 mana, that immediately limits your play options. In late game bgs, you more and more spam roll to find one or two key cards to finalize your build as it is generally nearly fully established at that point. When it gets to the point of “only tripling my baron makes me stronger,” there’s little “skill” in spam rolling to find that baron.
In the end, both take skill, but for very different reasons.
Ranked is repetitive, BG is way less. This alone makes BG more demanding.
The thing with ranked is that you are more or less facing the same decks and playstyles over and over again. Play more and you will get better - it is natural, you simply can't possibly not get better at something if you do it 10 times, then 100 times, then 1000 times.
In BG there are so many variables. Playing more will only allow you to see some patterns, but in the end you always have to adapt to what the Tavern gives you and what is the situation with other players.
Compare it to school - it is a matter of having something memorized vs understanding something to an extent, when you can solve not only the problem you memorized, but also adapt and solve the analogical ones. Both approaches work, but the one where you have to come up with solutions on your own, not "search your memory" for them, is more demanding.
Don't let anyone fool you: ladder (you now, ACTUAL Hearthstone) is primarily a skill based game influenced by RNG (drawing and, unfortunately as of late, RNG mechanics). Every card game operates so, and if we're lucky, in next expansions we might see a rotation of RNG mechanics. But it's still a skill game.
Battlegrounds? Name says it, it's an "auto battler": after a setting phase, you have absolute no influence on the result: the very definition of RNG.

Bg's are the worst crap in this game right after adventures imo
And to that I say "Amen", I've touched this Gimmick of a Gamemode exactly ONCE, and never looked back. That ridicolous high Time Pressure / Decision making is just not my cup of coffee at all, but I'am sure it fits younger folks / nerdy kids.
Annoyingly this is getting way more attention than it deserves, now even making it into the Hearthstone General Discussions.

I agree with all of this. I'm ready to quit Hearthstone because the mode I like most (arena) gets zero attention in favor of the complete shit show that are BGs. Nothing about the mode appeals to me so it really sucks they abandoned working on the other aspects of Hearthstone to promote this crap. To each his own I suppose, but I've played Hearthstone nearly since the beginning and BGs are just awful.

Overall, i like ranked more, but it's both fun.
Always expect the unexpectable!

It’s pretty apples and oranges.

Well, if I compare the level of complexity of thinking when playing the Legend ladder and the BG, I think it's almost the same...
