There are few points, you need to take into consideration, before crafting the relatively cheap spell mage deck.
1. It has a hard counter in the face of albatros. I have managed to win games even when the oponent has played multiple albatroses, but still, you need an amazing luck with the card draw to compete after that point.
2. Amazing Reno is an important part of the deck, mainly for the ability to clear the board. There are many deck in meta now, which will be able to fill a big board in a turn, so I found that the strategy to save a frost nova and ray of frost for later turns and to start freezing oponent's bord on turn 8 and on so you can remove everything with Reno on turn 10 is a strategy, which increases your chances of wining. Other than that, most of the times Reno can straight up murder you and in fewer occasions to swing the game in your favour, so it can work as a panic button, even for the 5 armor it provides.
3. The deck is fun and has an adequate amount of rng, which, and I know I`ll get flamed for this, I like. Normaly, if you are able to play Learn Draconic on turn 1 and have an Apexis Blast on turn 5, and it gives you a decent 5 drop, you gain an advantage by having 2 strong bodies on bord with a possible removal of an enemy minion with the 5 dmg from AB is realy good.
4. Font of Power - it has won me 10 or more games by giving me Antonidas + aprentice combo, and with the discounted spells from Incanter's Flow I am able to generate up to 6 fireballs in one turn, which in most cases, combined with the ability to clear the bord with Reno is a game winner.
But the most important thing is, that the deck is fun to play, so my suggestion is - try it without Reno at first, and if you think it is fun, invest the gold to obtain Reno at a later point.
I forgot to mention, that once I reached diamond 5 rank, I've tried to push for legend with 3-4 other decks (highlaned mage, highlander Galakrond Rogue, Secret stealth rogue etc.) but I wasn't able to keep a higher rank with them. For the last 2 days I am playing spell mage and I am at diamond 2 now.
I don't run Reno in Highlander Mage. It's really too late of a board clear to be reliable. It was necessary during the meta infected with Res Priest and DQ Alex boards.
Reno has saved me countless times and I’m grateful whenever I play him. However, I do like the Quest Hero power better so if possible I try to play him first.
He turns the game into an absolute clown-fiesta. If you like that go ahead and craft. But if you're like me even if he works well 60% of time, it's the 40% you remember and you get no satisfaction from wins...."great! i rolled a free late game mana free spell...and he concedes...this feels....bad? shit."
Hey is it still worth for crafting spell mage? and is amazing reno really needed? idk if i should buy packs or spend gold for adventure and reno?

Thank you very much man, really thanks

But now the deck to beat is DH, for which Blizzard, Rolling Fireball and Flame Ward are more important.
Spell Mage as a deck is definitely fun. Is it good? I wouldn't say so unfortunately.
