Hello, my name is Reptiler, and i have been playing HS on and off since Beta. I have been legend more times than i can count, and i think im currently in a good spot to "Reach for the stars" and try to go "Semi-pro". I would like to ask people who have been Qualified to the masters tour, about advice to do so. Do you go for the Ladder, or do you go for the tournaments? Also recommend strategies before, after and during the tournaments. Throw in your semi-pro story aswell, i would love to hear everything, and thanks alot in advance!
Dude, you've come to the right place! Everyone here is better than all the GM players. They're just unlucky which is why nobody has ever heard of them.
Basically I'm playing Hearthstone for tournaments only and also taking place in Masters Tour qualifiers almost every week, however my best result there was only getting into top32 few times, so I guess you need a better advisor.
Trying to earn more money with HS than wasting it (Bundles etc) is quite the uphill Battle, and Odds are stacked heavily against You.
I'am afraid Blizzard isn't really interested in creating an abundant Infrastructure for Hearthstone that rewards players outside of the currently known GM Stops and Blizzcon, which are exclusive for a handful of Top ranked Legendary players, most of them known full time Pros (Thijs, Kolento, RDU, Savjz, Firebat etc)
Don't think "going pro" in HS is worthwhile, you will more often than not be disappointed by the sheer lack of Opportunities.
I don't like being a party pooper but man better find a real job. :/
I bust my ass for a very decent living... If I could make even half of what I make sitting in my underwear, playing hearthstone...
Although, I made some alright money for a couple years, many years ago playing online poker, and if I had to choose, I would take my current physically intensive job. Poker obliterates your psyche. To make decent money you need to be glued to your computer for 14 hours per day, 7 days a week, and it's a rollercoaster. I would literally feel like I was going to have a mental breakdown once a week towards the end. If esports are as emotionally devastating as online poker, then never mind, but I doubt they are.
I agree with everything that has been said so far. However if you still want to go for it here are my answers to your questions.
Tournaments or ladder mainly depends on how much time you have vs how good you are. Getting top 16 on ladder is only really feasible if you are one of the top 100 players. If so it is probably your best bet, however it will still take a lot of time. Basically through ladder you can guarantee qualification if strong enough and you have enough time. In tournaments you will have to get lucky. So if you are not as good (of course if you want to qualify for a masters tour you will still have to be way above average) you should go for those tournaments. Also you will have to play a lot in them to get decent qualification chances so it is going to be even more time intensive than the ladder. Doing both ladder and tournaments is of course giving you the highest chance possible.
As for tournament advice once you qualify I think it is really important that you play decks you are comfortable with. I played highlander hunter in masters seoul not because I thought it was the best deck(mage was better), but because I was super comfortable with it. The tournament is a totally different situation to other hearthstone since you play games for hundreds or thousands of dollars. Therefore you want to know a really solid baseline of what to do in the arising situations. I went 7-5 so I was playing single matches for 500 Dollars, which I could only do at a high level because I had a lot of experience with the decks. Also try to get in the mind set of having fun and doing your best rather than being distracted by the situation.
Im currently studying, and i've secured a job after my study. So this isnt a full time thing, i just want to enter 1 masters tour, before i drop this :P So to everyone, this isnt going to be my way of living, im not going all in and dropping my school, cause thats too far.
