Played quite a bit of wow several years ago and when HS came out I thought this was a really nice alternative to keep being involved in the WOW theme without spending hours inside the house doing quests and defeating bosses. I know they are 2 completely different games, but for me the feeling remains.
I have to say though it may be easier if you are having a full time job, I choose to spend around 400 Euro's a year on this game because it suits my involvement in this game. It absolutely does not make me a better player because with the now old ranking system, my highest climb was I think rank 12ish.
I play for fun and create a lot of own tinkering decks. Play maybe 3 or 4 games a day , on average. I like to collect and the easiest way is to buy the bundle's and spend all the dust and gold I collect during the upcoming season and dump it all in the new expansion.
So with this in mind it is not to much money for me. But I can imagine for some it is and it may not be rewarding because of it. And like you (ThisWasTheOnlyUsernameAvailable ) said ; every three month's or so you know this is comming, mayby get a part time job or summer job or whatever works in your region and plan for it.
I started playing Legends of Runeterra about 3 weeks ago. I spent a total of $20 on the game, and already own most of the collection.
$14 went to buying my first deck outright using wildcards (Mogwai's Heimerdinger control deck) with no RNG or luck in the purchase. The other $6 went to buying two expedition runs (aka Arena).
Obtained most of the cards through maxing out the weekly chests, the progression milestones, and through repeated value on the expeditions, which is significantly easier, since the runs cap out at 7 wins, allow up to 5 losses, and give you a free second chance if you fail the first time.
The cost I paid was equivalent to an indie game, the progression took about as long as a AAA game, and I got to play a Masters tier deck from the get-go.
---
Contrast this to the $90 I spent on the expansion bundle, which only unlocked about 1/5th of the legendaries, and that's with insane highroll on my unpacks. Then on top of that, I still can't craft the deck I want without disenchanting other legendaries.
To add, it'd also take until next xpac to get maybe 1/2th of the remaining collection.
This is absolutely a lie. I dabbled in Runeterra, and there is absolutely no way you have only spent $20 and are close to a full collection in 3 weeks. Absolutely impossible.
It is a much cheaper game that Hearthstone to amass the full collection, but get out of here with this bullcrap.
3x Expeditions per week = 9 Champions and ungodly amount of wildcards.
Progression rewards = 3 Champions per Region + Random upgrades can also give champions. Expeditions give an insane amount of exp for these unlocks too.
Shards can also be used for champions.
And then $9 used to buy Heimerdinger.
In addition to the starting collection of champions the game gives. Compared to Hearthstone that only occasionally gives out promotional legendaries, and starts you with none.
Im still missing a few. Fiora, Thresh, Kalista,S and Anivia. Also missing third copies of a couple, such as Darius and Tryndamere. But a lot of meta decks dont even need three copies of the expensive ones.
My collection should be done by the time the new set hits. So regardless of whether or not you believe me, the game is significantly cheaper, and my collection is almost done.
Runnetera - may or may not be a better game than HS. From the few games I've seen it didn't grab my attention. Is it cheaper than HS? Yes. Is a Hyundai cheaper than a BMW? Yes.
All of these are card games that can be played online. But they are clearly not the same things.
I play HS (since closed beta), MTG:A and Runeterra at the moment and I can agree that the games are very different. HS is casual friendly in terms of gameplay, while MTG:A is the most hardcore and Runeterra is something in between. In terms of economy MTG:A is the most expensive, HS is quite close second tbh and Runeterra is the cheapest game to play.
HS is a good game and that's why I keep coming back to it, but the new things they are bringing this year have to work or else it will start falling behind the competition or it will truly become a card game only for casual audience, since in terms of gameplay and depth it can't compete well against the other two games I play and for me after going mostly F2P apart from adventures, the economy restricts what is left of the fun aspect, which for me is often brewing my own decks around cards I enjoy playing. EDIT: So is HS too expensive? for me in my current situation in life to enjoy "fully": yes and I don't preorder sets anymore since I don't feel I get enough worth for my money, but this is just my opinion of course.
Yes the game needs to generate money, but would it hurt if the players could choose their favourite class and get 1/2 legendaries of that class for free as their free legendary of the expansion when the new sets are released?
i've brought the welcome bundle 1 legendary and 10 classic packs and that's about it
i play arena specifically i'm a 6.5+ average player hitting the leaderboards of NA server
all my collection and everything i've amassed it purely through arena and abusing dust refund rules never mass disenchant etc
i feel the barrier for entry is harder for sure but with these new changes helps a bit with these new players. atleast u get a deck of your choice etc i don't play much other card games cuz hs has many play modes of what i like innkeeper story adventures solo runs arena bg and constructed wild so i'm content
i think the moral of the story is just play wtf u like and if there's value i find better else where jump on the opportunity. competition is good for HS so it evolves and the devs stop being silly and don't rest on their laurels gotta keep cracking the whip to come out with more and greater content! or..... the competition will catch up and surpass i welcome every card game more the better cuz at the end of the day the consumer has choice and gets a better deal and that i can say in the forums everyone can say a hell yeah too cheers

EDIT 2: billion typos.
That's a question that nobody can answer really. They gave everyone a full set of Demon Hunter cards which included two legendaries. That's pretty sweet. Plus they give returning players a free meta deck as well. That's pretty generous too. The new no duplicates rule also helps.
The question is where does it end? No matter what they do it seems like some people will never be satisfied. It's a no win situation for them. The idea with the free stuff is not to give everything away for free. The idea is to give players just enough to make them want to spend money in order to get more. Imo they are doing that pretty well.

dude, do you have a job? i mean a place where you can earn money for comfortable living? or maybe you are from 3rd - 4th world country? as for me, i am from Europe and i have a job. And mega pre-purchase bundle is about 10% or less of my average monthly income. Why is it too expensive? It is absolutely fine to spend money on things you like to do. My wife spends minimum 100$ every month on stuff like shopping, make-up and other women stuff, which is fine. And here you are offered to spend ~150$ every 3-4 months to have a solid card collection to be able to play any deck you want. Stop complaining and raise more money, or simply f2p this shit.

That's a fair point and I agree that giving the DH stuff for free is an excellent gesture and a lot of free content.
Presonally I have always been rather unlucky my free random legendaries or quranteed legendary in the first 10 packs as I can remember ever getting 2 useful cards out of those and often with the old "you get a random free legendary for logging in"; I usually got something I really really didn't want, which is why I'd personally appreciate having a bit more control of what Im gonna get and it would also motivate me for playing longer and more, thus having a higher chance of spending money on the game, but like I said for this expansion they are giving a lot of new free content and I hope it's a sign of a new direction.

That feeling of never lucky is why I think they decided to give all 5 Galakronds for Dragons and DH class this time. This way everyone gets the same and it eliminates the 'bad luck' aspect where people feel hard done by when they get a free legendary they don't want while their friends get all the best stuff. This is better imo. Everyone should get the same freebies. When it's random it inevitably leeds to some people feeling unlucky. That's not a good result when you're giving away free stuff.
If you got to select a class there's always a chance you'll wind up getting the crappy legendary instead of the one you want so that's the same result.

i dont play 2 classes cause i hate them so much. Druid and warrior. So i disenchant every card i get for those classes. Yesterday i made fireside gathering and opened my 90 packs. Guess what legendaries do i get besides 2 neutral? One for druid and one for warrior. Feels bad man...

I also hate Warrior so I can understand but that's what you deserve for dissing Druid :)
Yeah, we always remember the loses more than the wins - the times when we get the exact cards we want are forgotten much quicker than when we get the exact ones we don't. Just human nature. Everyone is like that, not just you. Anyway, unlucky man. Soz.
I usually buy the pre-expansion bundle (with Dod for example the 80€, with AoO i chose the 50€). Also, I collect gold between expansion, as today I have 6500gold. I will have all the commons and rares thanks to the new duplicate protection, I think i’ll have most epics too. However, i will have to craft most of the legendaries since I found 2 legendaries in 55 packs I opened yesterday. In my opinion, the game is not too expensive and I don’t mind spending 50/80€ every 4 months. But I think it’s unfair that after spending money and collecting as much gold as possible, I still won’t have many legendaries without crafting them. I think they should change the legendary rate, at least make sure that every 20 pack you get a legendary because it feels so bad to open 35/40 packs to find a legendary, especially when you have all the commons and rares and all you get is 40 dust.
Card games are expensive on their own. Even if you don't compare card games, if you like then or not, if you can afford it or not, just stop and think: it is 80 euros for a pre-release that don't even give you all the cards of the expansion. For 60 euros you can buy almost any AAA game.
So, is it expensive? YES, IT IS
We are not talking about F2P, we are talking about prices
Compare Hearthstone to Magic: I can buy 90 Hearthstone packs for $100, while in Magic, I have to pay $115 for a booster box (30-some packs). Is Hearthstone expensive?
Your comparison is wrong.
Compare Hearthstone with another game. You buy it for 50, 60 or 70 and you have done. In Hearthstone you have to pay at least 50 every 4 months if you want to play. Is Hearthstone expensive?
By the way. The resources required in order to develop a game are very high. GTA 5 costs 265 millions in order to develop it. What it the cost to develop a new expansion in Hearthstone? For sure less than 1 million.
I haven't used single dime on this game. Yet I can always craft what legendaries I want and I'm multiple times legendary ranked in wild.
Friend plays only standard and he have hit legendary in there, and he is also free to play.
We both think this game isnt worth of real money. Even using single payment isnt worth it if you can play all you want free.
Assuming you're hypothetically a new player, and you play because you watched a video of a person playing a fun meta deck with only 2 legendaries, 2 epics, and the rest are commons. Pretty cheap deck, right?!
Let's say for arguments sake that average daily gold is around 100g (it's less, but im being lazy at math, so i'll round up)
2x legends, 2x epics = 4000 dust value. Average pack dust is around 110 dust. So assuming the new player has a full collection of commons and rares (they don't), it'd take roughly 37 days (over a month!) to craft that extremely cheap fun meta deck that was the reason for playing.
Granted, in that time, you'll unlock 1 random legendary. However you'd need to disenchant it if you still wanted to play the meta deck.
But wait, average pack dust assumes that the player has a full collection of rares and commons, which a new player won't. It takes around ~45 packs to complete the commons and rares. So that's still around another month of grinding to start getting the dust for your deck.
Overall, 2 months to build a very cheap meta deck. So no, you can't always craft the cards you want as a F2P player. That's a lie.

Really fucking weird flex that $90 is 10% of your monthly income. That's $900 a month. You're working a part time minimum wage job.
Let's say you pay $400 a month in rent (which is cheap!). Then your car insurance is $80, your utilities at maybe $80, and groceries at maybe $200 a month, which is also cheap since you mention a wife.. Though that's likely a lie, since you describe her expenditures as "make-up and other women stuff.
That's $850 a month, assuming NO ADDITIONAL EXPENDITURES, which would be insane. With only $50 in savings, which is hugely financially irresponsible.
Either you're a financial disaster, in which case Hearthstone is 100% guaranteed TOO EXPENSIVE FOR YOU by indisputable definition. Or you live with your parents and have that disposable income, which would mean Hearthstone is affordable, but means you're in no place to offer financial advice.
I'll let you pick one and adjust your poll answer.

You aren't wrong but there are other stuff to consider.
Europe is a big place. 900$ a month in Serbia gets you more than 900$ in Denmark. An average small appartment in Eastern Europe is 400$ a month + around 50$ in utilities, depending on your deal with the landlord (some utilities may be included in the rent). He also doesn't need to have a car so that is 80$ less. I'm not sure on this point because I don't drive but I'll take your word regarding insurance. Let's take everything else that you've calculated cor truth and we'll just add those 80$ on top of 50$ if there are no extra expenses, leaving us with 130$ in savings a month. 130$ is nothing in western EU countries but it will get you a lot more in eastern Europe.
It is a weird flex. If you've said that is your daily wage, which I still find low but that's from my perspective, I'd comoletely get it (especially if you were from poorer countries) but this is just...eh

Your comparison is wrong.
Compare Hearthstone with another game. You buy it for 50, 60 or 70 and you have done. In Hearthstone you have to pay at least 50 every 4 months if you want to play. Is Hearthstone expensive?
By the way. The resources required in order to develop a game are very high. GTA 5 costs 265 millions in order to develop it. What it the cost to develop a new expansion in Hearthstone? For sure less than 1 million.
Cards games are overpriced and cash cow.
