I basically haven’t played much the last couple months but yesterday I win streaked from like R20 to R17 (so impressive right) and I log in today and find that I have a star bonus of freaking 8 lol. That’s equivalent to what, getting gold rank on reset? Nice

I also think it's sweet. Then you find a 4 page thread full of conspiracy theories and incessant whining about it. It's insane lol

Regardless of how people feel about it, this is an issue. You should only be able to get an 8 star bonus having finished last season at a minimum of rank 8 3 stars. The fact you somehow got it all the way down at rank 17 is proof that the bonus algorithm isn't working properly or as advertised at all and kind of invalidates the effort people put in to achieve that bonus reasonably thinking that being higher rank was the only way to get it. Frankly I can see why people wouldn't be happy about this; you basically reaped the rewards of achieving rank 8 when you only got rank 17.
Yeah it's working as intended. I think blizzard realised that it would be too hard a punishment for experienced players to have to grind at a low bonus star rate just because they didn't play much for a month or two and so the stars are also linked to your underlying MMR. This is mentioned on a Q&A they recently responded too.
It would also be detrimental to newer players if higher skilled players that were absent from ladder a month or two were stuck in the lower ranks just constantly playing these newer players.
If someone hits legend 10 months in a row then doesn't play a month due to vacation/work/family. It would be crazy to then have them earning only the minimum bonus to get back to where they should be playing
Based on my own experience, the climb works a intended. You don't have to grind your way up thanks to the bonus stars. One thing though, I believe reaching Legend will be easier now. This is an area where Blizz could make some changes in the coming weeks.
After less than 2 hours I’m sitting at gold 8 with a 4 star bonus so it should level out at Platinum 5. I’m certainly not complaining. Makes sense because when I’m active I usually mess around rank 10-5

This is news to me, thought it was based entirely on one's rating from the prior season but I guess linking the bonus to mmr makes sense. With that said, it still kinda sucks for people that actually worked to get higher ranking to end up getting the same star bonus as someone who barely played and ended the season 10 ranks lower than them. Doesn't seem particularly fair.

It may just go by the overall MMR of my account for all I know. Like I said I typically hover around ranks 10-5 so if an 8 star bonus equates to rank 8 it fits.

It sounds like this might be the case. They haven't specified the degree to which MMR is taken into account relative to the rank an account achieved in the season immediately prior TMK, so it's possible MMR is the primary determinant of star bonus and last season's rank is relatively insignificant in the overall equation. If anyone has additional information/insight on this and can provide a source I'd be very interested to learn more.

They HAVE specified they only match by MMR until you are out of bonus stars:
Q: How does matchmaking work for each season?
A: There are two matchmaking pools: matchmaking by rating (aka. MMR) and by rank.
When your star bonus multiplier is bigger than 1, or you are in Legend rank, you are (generally) in the first matchmaking pool; when your star bonus drops to 1, you are in the second pool.
You will get a lot more rewarded for the wins with bonus stars, but they do not come easily.

Ok, you clearly misunderstood what I was saying. That matchmaking is predicated on MMR now is not in question. The question is, to what extent is star bonus predicated on an account's MMR relative to the rank they achieved the season before. The key words being to what extent and relative here. It's been established that MMR is a factor in determining the star bonus, but is it the predominant factor, to the point that the rank an account achieved in the last season or even the last few months is practically irrelevant? That's what I'm curious about.
Just read the front news page on this site - it's all there. In short - the bonus stars are determined by your higher rank or MMR.
Q: How many stars bonuses do I get at the start of the season? A: It depends on your current MMR and the rank you reached from your previous season, whichever gives a higher value.

Makes sense. It makes it a lot more forgiving to play less a month, as you would get stars based on MMR in that case.
It is perfectly possible to have legend mmr on a fairly low rank.
Haven't played standard in months. But got a +6 star bonus. When secret paladin was a thing in standard i reached rank 5. So if you ever even tried to rank, you got a bonus

Exactly, it's based on MMR, I finished rank 11 and have the same 8 stars because I don't play a lot and normally just aim for rank 15 each month
It definitely is supposed to give you the thrill of progression.
Im more happy about the 1st time rewards, Its been 6 years and I finally got my first Hungry Crab (I have been playing since beta)

New ranking system is awful. No more free golden cards. You are getting cheated.

I really like it too, climbing feels better and I prefer the new rewards.
Yes, just like at the old system you could get matched with legend players outside of legend rank - same MMR logic applies here.
