Hi there... totally new to this game and the concept. While I know the basis of card games I have never really played any. I have totally fallen in love with the aesthetics and details in this game... and have enjoyed clicking around and winning some games in practice. I am however struggling to get past the first adventure being Sir Finley. I know I’m prob like a lot of other noobs on here posting about this sort of stuff, but please bear with me and show me the ropes...is there anyone willing to be helpful and guide me with a kind of 101 to the game. YouTube tends to all be a bit too detailed for me.

You answered your own question, my friend, you're obviously just inexperencied. Sadly, that doesn't mean you cannot end up being just another terrible player who only plays aggro, hehe... XD Only time will tell, sorry. ;)
Also, Youtube is not bad for learning, but quite the opposite. You only have to search for the right videos, dude. Start by watching the Hearthstone: Trump Basic Teachings series, those videos are really good for new players.
I'm fully aware you said you know the basis of card games, but to be honest, it seems pretty obvious to me that you know much less than you think, so here is the first one:
Like Sherman said, Trump's Basic Teachings is a very good (albeit outdated) tutorial series to get familiar with some basic concepts like minion trading, card advantage, mana efficiency, etc., and get to know the different classes and playstyles a bit.
If you watch the videos, and try to play around with basic decks (even though most of them have become significantly worse over the years, particularly Shaman, Warrior and Druid), you should easily beat Normal practice mode and also have no/not many problems with the Expert practice mode. They can all be easily beaten with only basic cards.
Once you did that, if you still don't feel ready to take on real opponents, another good mode to practice the game is the Kobolds & Catacombs Dungeon Run, that you should find in the Single Player section. While it can be a bit too much at first, and is quite challenging for new players, the mode lets you try out and get familiar with a lot of different cards and strategies with all the different classes, and allows you to improve your deckbuilding.
When you are familiar with the basics, you shouldn't have too much of a problem completing the adventure encounters, and be ready for human opponents as well.
Thanks guys. I’m just going to start looking at that video now. Every video I have tried watching before seems to have gone into too much depth straight away. I have quite a bit of spare time on my hands lately and this is something I’ve always been interested in learning how to play. I’m hoping to get good enough to just enjoy the game at least :). Thanks :)

Welcome to Hearthstone. I'm not sure what region you play on, but I (almost) have a full collection on "Americas". So we could play and I could let you try some new cards/decks that you don't have at the moment to see what you like. I am certainly not the best player but I've been playing for a while and I would definitely share what I know.
You're welcome to add me to your friend's list: N0Sp00n#1422 (the o's are zeroes...because I'm so cool...LOL)

If you're looking for a teacher I'd be willing to help. My battletag: is by my name so feel free to add me.
You are either lucky or not. there is nothing else to it.
So you're telling me that only difference between the players that consistently hit Legend and the players stuck at rank 25, is luck?
Luck has certainly taken over as the primary(if the only) indicator of how it goes. The game has added WAY too many cards and mechanics that by their very nature strip away any "skill" or strategy that you may want to deploy. With seemingly unlimited discovery cards that spawn more discovery cards, classes having tons of access to cards outside of their own class, Bail-me-out crap like Zephyrs, Lackeys, etc, etc, you'd have to be a fool to think you can "play around" impossible to "know" situations. Only a sucker would buy into that.
Back when the game wasnt all luck & gimmicks it DID require some thought and you could actually make plays that seemed to effect the game, good or bad. You could calculate that your opponent only could hold 1-2 of a certain card or just ONE of a legendary card. You could strategically try to play around board clears. You had to use removal wisely. You didnt have to worry about awful crap like Hunter pulling a Tirion or Rogue conveniently having access to flamestrike. Its never ending and stupid. No skill. No nothing. Roll dice and hope it pans out.
Those reaching legend are simply abusing these broken decks/mechanics and sure, maybe 1% of your decisions *matter* but Id even question that. You used to be able to play many different decks and still feel like you had a chance to compete. Now? Nah - you choose between a few obnoxious decks and join the casino. Fun and interactive. At least Ive been free to play for over 2 years now and will stay that way until they back to more normal games and less Vegas garbage.
You are either lucky or not. there is nothing else to it.
So you're telling me that only difference between the players that consistently hit Legend and the players stuck at rank 25, is luck?
ill try to answer... only difference between the players that consistently hit Legend and the players stuck at rank 25, is.......the amount of time they invest - spent - waste - lose - entertain their self - have fun playing that game.............so 14-15 times legend, only means that this guy played literally thousands more games-hours than a casual 25-20 rank ''bad'' player.
You are either lucky or not. there is nothing else to it.

Yeah - thats mostly it. There are tons of decks that can maintain 51% win rates but the amount of games required is just brutal. Plus, how "fun" is it? Just win one, lose one, win one, lose one. Totally random and very matchup dependent. Wins dont feel earned and losses cause rage. Its too bad - they are sucking the fun out of this game....slowly but surely with the horrible mechanics and ridiculous power creep/randomness.

Keep telling yourselves that. People have a real problem admitting they aren't all that great. Many of the top players don't simply grind a 51% win rate deck. If you think they do then you're ignorant, stupid or both. Most pilot good decks to Kuch higher win rates and even poor decks to good win rates. There are some great creators and streamers who have had good success with certain decks which certainly aren't T1, when I've used them I've then struggled to get near 50% with them.
Decisions are key, discover isn't the death of skill, those choices matter. Reading the game, knowing what your opponent has and is likely to play, what mana is available and what is likely to come next etc. I've watched streamers and tend to think of the decision I would make as they're thinking and it isn't unusual for them to do something different, go a totally different way with navigating the game and win. My decisions, with hindsight, likely would have lost me the game. There are times I've seen people use a card like Zephrys and been bemused by it, definitely not something I would have done but they go on and win the game. Knowing when to use him on turn 2 or holding him to use later can be the difference between winning and losing. I'm assuming you haven't watched many of the top players because a child can see they know what they're doing and don't simply grind a 51% deck.
I'm not a great player, I can get to rank 5-3 and that's about my limit and I absolutely see the difference between me and a top player. Sure, they out in more time and as a result they know the game better, can grind a bit more and make better decisions but a pro athlete also spends more time training than me and they can compete to a higher level in their given sport than I ever could as well.
I've seen almost every game I've ever played have its salty, whiny section of player base that says there's no skill in the game. Funny that. Either an awful lot of games require little to no skill or people like you are talking shit and I'd out a lot on it being the latter.
Stop lying to newer players to try and make yourselves feel better. It's pathetic. i see top FIFA players being accused of 'simply' abusing the mechanics as well, go check out their forums and you'll see similar whiny bitches to yourself. Almost every game that involves PvP has the same complaints as well as the tired, age old 'the game USED to require skill, but it doesn't now' haha, it isn't just this game people like you repeat the same crap about.

Welcome to HS! As you can see, there is an ongoing debate about the extent to which skill (as opposed to luck) plays a role in winning and ranking up. I can assure you that if you continue to play/put time into the game your skillset will develop and you will get better at the game, so don't be discouraged by those asserting that luck and RNG are the only factors that decide who wins/loses matchups. You may not always be able to anticipate what is in your opponent's hand, but you can optimize how you play what is in yours.
I would offer you my btag but I see several people have already done that and I'm sure they're more than capable of helping you out. Best of luck and remember to have fun. The instant you start taking HS too seriously will be the instant you get tired of it and lose all interest; take it from someone who's been there.
P.S.: Experience is the best teacher, so if you find that YT videos are too complicated just jump into some matches. Experiment with how you play your cards and try to find what is most conducive to achieving whatever deck you are playing with's win condition. Knowing how your deck wins and playing in such a way that facilitates this "condition" is integral to victory/progression in HS, and the best way to attain said knowledge IMO is through actual gameplay. If you're struggling with this, check out pro streamers on twitch and observe how they are playing your deck differently. You'll be able to find popular/high WR decks on HSreplay; I would suggest an aggro deck like face hunter or mech pala bc they are relatively easy to play, cheap to construct, and allow you to focus on fundamentals like counting and board control. Again, best of luck.
You are either lucky or not. there is nothing else to it.

The only person that seems pathetic to me is you, thinking that RNG and time aren't the main factors in getting to top ranks.
Imagine if you played all the time you used watching those streamers, you would probably be rank 1-2 or legend.
But again, you want to pretend that using a zephyrs to get the perfect card is very big skill, that discovering 10+ answers as Rogue with Lackeys is total skill.
You are also suggesting that if you want to get good, you have to consider every single standard card for every deck out there. Are you even reading what you write? You are telling people to expect a Rogue to have Plague of Death, or bloodlust, or a warlock to have an equality + hellfire. Or a Mage to pull out a tirion on turn 8. No, the discover mechanic has been taken too far and has removed any sense of structure in decks.
You are either lucky or not. there is nothing else to it.

Exactly my point. The Discover mechanic is NOT skill based at all and youd have to be a "child" or an "idiot" to assume so. Same with the riduclous amount of other nonsense and shenanigans theyve shoved into this game.
That aside - when you get the right cards you win and if you dont you lose. Its that simple. Legend players are just grinders abusing broken shit. Hello? Show me tangible data that a player made legend with a whipped up home brew deck or a true tier 4 deck. Good Luck.
I remember watching a few streamers that used to start a new account and get legend with pretty basic decks. I think one was "Toast". I've hit legend and I always get at least rank 5 easily every month but I don't think I could do it with those decks.
That aside - when you get the right cards you win and if you dont you lose. Its that simple. Legend players are just grinders abusing broken shit. Hello? Show me tangible data that a player made legend with a whipped up home brew deck or a true tier 4 deck. Good Luck.
But almost all of the tier 1 and 2 decks were created by Legend players and simply copied by the majority of the community. Including those that can't climb out of ranks 20-10 with the exact same lists.
There are people that made Legend with stuff like Phaoris Paladin, Aggro Druid, Highlander Shaman, Quest Warlock and other lists that almost don't appear in the stats at all.
Also, it's completely irrelevant what deck tier their used. If the opponents are using the same level of deck and they still consistently win much more than others over large sample sizes, it's already proof that they are better. They don't need to handicap themselves playing with Quest Highlander Mogu Cultist Warrior.

Large sample sizes? How large? a few thousand games at the most? Thats throw-away data. Junk stats - which are typical of the websites for this game. They act like their stats are scientific law but they are anecdotal at best and somewhat useless at the worst. Every one of those decks you mentioned are powerful and wheres the proof they truly made legend wth those decks? Is the entire run on unedited video? Probably not. Sorry - I have a life and cant watch some pimply-faced teenager play this game all day.
Look, it OK - some people feel this game is like card-game chess and there is no luck or randomness or matchup polarization. Thats fine. Some people still think the Earth might be flat too. This game is a full blown casino right now. Guess thats what the people want. Well, you got it. Just hope for the best. Thats all you can do.
