Here is the thing. When a ccg is generous and fan, the players are willing to pay and play more.
I have only bought the welcome bundle in hs and i am not willing to give them even a another cent as i log in only for a couple of days after expansions. The metas have been terrible, we had only 2 new modes since launch and 0 of quality of life improvements.
On ther other hand, i have spent 120E on mtga and i have already a bigger collection than in hs. I could not spend a single euro and still have most of the playable cards by farming the many mtga modes. But i still preorder and support the game. Not out of the kindness of my heart but because there are many decks and combinations to unlock. I am not forced to pay in order to compete, but since there are tens of decks with limitless combinations, the more cards i have, the more fun i have.
Now, back to hs, Why should a old player who has the dust and gold to pay more when he can make the handful viable decks for free? Blizzard are lazy fucks who build the decks for us and just pump the same copy paste content. Just look any expansion. Around 10% of the cards are viable and the rest are garbage, and the viable cards are most of the times blant uninspired powercreep. What's more infuriating is how they respond to this. Instead of giving more thought and taking more risk in cardmaking in order to incentivise buying cards, they simply push the price of the game (raising prices, pumping more content per time, blocking cards behind paywalls etc).
Basically : Instead of good economy and fan gameplay is Fuck you!Give me money!
I play MTGA and HS, both since closed beta and I call this BS. MTGA is even more expensive than HS. The pass tho is a pretty good deal, but it requires you to put in real money (well, it is possible by farming drafts. but collecting those gems if you are average still requires you some work). I do like the reward system of MTGA, not because it gives more but because it gives the rewards FASTER (15 wins/day, instead of 30 wins/day at HS). WIth a 50% win rate, MTGA takes 30 games, hearthstone requires 60 games to reach maximum daily reward. And MTGA games are imo way faster (mono red aggro hello there).
Still, MTGA is very expensive. Try to build one of those control decks, it is insane. In HS you can use neutral cards in all decks, in MTGA you are bound to the colors. Even the multicolor lands are expensive. And you cant dust your collection. One pack gives you more cards, whcih just means more garbage which you cant dust.
Affordable MTGA decks are monored, monoblack aggro decks, its just like in HS. Fast games, fast wins, fast rewards.
Please dont tell me anything about "even with small/medium size collection you can build competitive decks", thats just not true. I play ranked and casual, and you face aggro decks a lot.
WIzards is WAYYYY more greedy than Blizz. Remember the pass at the beginning? Paying money to unlock levels. Forcing you to play everyday (Yes, it got changed but only after the shitstorm!). Or historic format. 2 WIldcards required for ONE card. WHAT!? Using gold to unluck Brawl queue?!
You can get 2 pack worth of staff per day each containing 1 protected (from duplicates) epic/mythic,2 uncommon (rare in hs) and 5 common cards. You get around 40 free another packs by the end of expansion, you keep the cards you draft (in hs is keeping the cards in the arena),you can go infinite in constracted modes with just 4 wins (57% win rate) and most importandly you can buy deals like passes with in game currency.
Now about aggro decks, yeah you face them a lot because there are many new players in the game which cannot afford or are good enough to play anything else in the first days. You get many starting decks and resources to try the game. Now if you want that awesome grixis or esper deck you have pay or grind. But lets be honest, without playing a forgiving deck like mono red first, you would suck playing something more complex anyway, especially in the best of 3 format. You can make 1 deck of your choice after about 4 weeks of play without farming any of the modes. Much much less if you are a good player. This is fair. Not great and it could be better but is fair.
Sorry, but you are either lying about playing magic or you simply played too little. The game is by no means perfect and has huge issues both with the gameplay and the economy but calling mtga more expensive than hs? Get out of here mate.
Lying about playing mtg? My friend, I even have paper cards. Still its bs.
First about draft:
Draft = 1 Expansion. And you draft the cards, you need to get a good deck, NOT to get the missing cards for your collection! That would be stupid! About going infinite: same at HS (even though in Arena you cant pick the pack you wont, but theoreticly possible, with gold n dust), but for going infinite in MTGA: monored aggro again. I play enough, I watch enough streamers, it is real.
About monored in general:
Did you watch mythic championship? Monored aggro not a "beginner deck" anymore.
And I dont care about the cards. I have a shitton of uncommon, common wildcards. Getting those cards is still worthless, you cant dust them.
Juicy decks are VERY expensive. Period. MTGA is more expensive than HS.
The only thing I would change is the "disenchant 4 to craft 1" ratio and reduce maximum pity timers for legendaries.
The 4 to 1 ratio feels total bullshit and spending ~50 to maybe be unlucky and open 2 out of ~28 legendaries of a single set is the worst feeling ever.
I'm guessing you're fairly new to Hearthstone, because having cards you can only obtain when you buy/complete a Solo Adventures isn't new. They just havent done it in a couple years. What was the last one? The Icecrown set from Knights of the Frozen Throne?
Yes that is not new, but having regular expansion where you need to buy regular packs and at the same time buy adventure to have all cards is new. That was not happening back then

Pity timers actually its a really good idea, it's really frustrating to open bunch of packs, and then get 1-2 useless legendaries, one cool new thing to have - is the limited amount of rerolls on legendaries, in order to get a better one, or the one you actually excited about.

And thats one of the problems of the game that i mentioned. They cater way too much to the "i am a braindead trash, but i like winning" crowd. They give red and green colours too much power since the game launched. As i said, i am not blind to games flaws, but you completely ignored its strong points
I feel the monetization system of the game is fine overall in the aspect of bundles and stuff. What the game needs is to provide more incentive for people to play. One quest a day does not do justice, especially when it's worth shit all. Majority of people rather not login every day and wait till their quest queue fills up and do em all at once. This is rather pathetic given that after an expansion launches there's literally nothing exciting to look forward to for roughly 4 months. Almost no work is being put into brawls; honestly half of them are painful to play as they encourage playing a single deck and if you don't well tough luck you are not getting your pack, this just plain bad design and lazy work.
We should keep in mind blizzard is still making a staggering profit with their bundle sales, look at the success of dragon master bundle I remember reading somewhere that they completed their milestone. I believe this gives us the idea that people are willing to spend money. Also, a $20 bundle works well, but if you think about it, we always get that anyways albeit, not exactly $20 but a month or 2 after an expansion hits blizzard releases some bundle worth $25 having 30packs. However, the argument could be made that it contains old packs which is a valid concern. Another detail I want to point out unless you are very dedicated and have enough time to play the game for years you won't be having a full collection. I've played this game on and off for 4 years now and still haven't completed the classic collection. I don't mind spending money one bit because honestly I get dead bored and quit the game for months at a time which leaves me missing expansions and the solution, buy packs and get stocked. Now if the game didn't get dead stale 2 months after an expansion I probably wouldn't have left.
Therefore, I suggest, 1) Adding weekly rewards as mentioned 2) More events like hallow's end 3) Bundles which reward you like a guaranteed golden legendary 4) No more classic packs from quests 5) remove 50g quest, seriously why the fuck does this still exist? 6) legendary token would be ridiculously cool 7) Better reward for ranks, only slightly though 10packs for legend sounds kinda nuts maybe like 4packs 2 for 5 and 1 for 10
